Its hard to deny Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, of his epic status in the history of rock and roll. He was without a doubt one of the most powerful and vocally gifted singers of our time. While many of you have heard that he is no longer with the band – not as many are familiar with the story of Arnel Pineda, the formerly homeless Filipino who has taken his place. Discovered on YouTube by Neil Schon, Arnel barely speaks a lick of English, yet he is perhaps the only man in world skilled enough to fill Steve’s shoes. If you haven’t heard him perform with Journey, take a peek at the trailer inside. His Perry-like voice alone is incredible.

[Review] The Elkcloner ‘The Elkcloner’

 [Review] The Elkcloner The Elkcloner
The Elkcloner is the brainchild of Serbian/New York composer Filip Mitrovic, who co-scored Resident Evil: Afterlife as well as The Echo and Sleep Dealer. With this self-titled debut album, Mitrovic has put out an album that tackles multiple genres using only live recordings, no samples whatsoever. Also featured on the album is Rose Colella, a Chicago-based jazz vocalist. Do all these components work in application or would it have been better left on paper?

Wanna Hear Some New Marilyn Manson?

Wanna Hear Some New Marilyn Manson?
Shock rocker Marilyn Manson released a new song, No Reflection, via Los Angeles’ KROQ radio station. Below you can hear the radio rip quality of the song (it’s actually pretty damn good, so don’t worry too much about the audio quality). The song comes off Manson’s upcoming eighth studio album Born Villain, which comes out this spring.
Personally, this is exactly what I was expecting to hear, so I’m enjoying it. What about you? What are your thoughts?

Apparently Listening To Rock N’ Roll Makes White People Racist

A study from the University of Minnesota is claiming that white people who listen to rock music are more likely to have racist tendencies that those who don’t. And my “bullshit meter” has just gone through the roof.

Let’s take a look at how this study was performed, shall we? The researchers took 138 students and told them that they were conducting a study on how funds should be distributed in college over several ethnic organizations. Let me get something clear right off the bat: I know how these studies work and deliberate misleading is totally okay in my book. Like, 100%, that’s fine, no worries.
After telling these kids what their purpose was, they made them sit in a waiting room while music played in the background for seven minutes. The researchers varied the music from Top 40 artists such as Akon and Gwen Stefani and rock and roll artists such as Bruce Springsteen and White Stripes. They even had “white power” groups such as Bound For Glory and Prussian Blue playing.
Those who listened to the Top 40 artists spread the money evenly amongst the ethnic organizations. Those who listened to rock and roll placed more money into white organizations. And that right there is their proof. Check below for my issues.

[Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians

[Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians
It’s an interesting world we live in now. It’s a time when people are literally seconds away from getting information on whatever subject they desire. Don’t know the capital of Madagascar? Google it*. Trying to figure out the name of the fifth Beatle? Google it**. Have a painful rash and want to know what could be causing it? Cancer. No, seriously, pretty much everything on WebMD leads to cancer, so don’t even go there. See a doctor who knows what he’s talking about.
See, I’m in the generation that was around before the Internet was a big thing. For some of you, that’s probably impossible to imagine. Hell, I have trouble remembering that time myself. But I still do. Instead of finding movie trailers online, we had to wait until the previews at a theater to see what was coming soon. Instead of reading about a tour online months before it kicked off, we listened to the radio or read about it in a magazine. And buying tickets? We actually went to a Ticketmaster location or called them up. No online purchasing for us. Craziness, right?
So what does this have to do with music? Elementary, my dear reader. It’s taken all the mystery of musicians out of music!

Anathema Offer Free ‘Untouchable, Pt. 1′ Download. GET IT!

anathema2012 Anathema Offer Free Untouchable, Pt. 1 Download. GET IT!
Pretty much my favorite release of the year (so far) is Anathema‘s Weather Systems (review). It’s a gorgeous, emotional journey that I cannot stop listening to (the iTunes play count is steadily rising into ridiculous numbers). The very first track, Untouchable, Pt.1, hooked me right from the beginning and, now, you can hear it as well as snag a free download. I cannot recommend this song highly enough. It’s beautiful and builds to an astonishing climax. Make sure you wear headphones and turn it up quite a bit because this is the type of song that should envelope the listener, drowning out everything else.

[Retro Review] Pearl Jam ‘Ten’

 [Retro Review] Pearl Jam Ten
It’s not surprising that today we can take Pearl Jam for granted. Hell, they’ve been around for over 20 years, they have a devoted fan base, and their music is, overall, pretty kickass. But upon the release of Ten, their debut album, in 1991, I don’t think anyone was really aware of exactly what was about to happen to the music scene. Often imitated, deservedly lauded, this album became one of the most important albums of a generation.

Seether Puts Together Complete iTunes Collection

Seether Puts Together Complete iTunes Collection
One of my favorite interviews I’ve done with Bloody-Disgusting was with Seether at the 2011 Uproar Festival. Funny, genuine, and passionate are definitely words I would use to describe these South African rockers. And their commitment is paying off yet again as their latest single, No Resolution, hit #7 on the Active Rock Chart this week.
The band is also compiling all of their releases from 2004′s Disclaimer II up through their latest album Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray (review) for an iTunes collection. The compilation will be featured at a discounted price. All album artwork and liner notes will be included in this release. The collection comes out March 6th.
The band will also be hitting the road in April alongside Bush, My Darkest Day, and Nickelback. Tour dates below.

Kid Rock To Play Show With Detroit Symphony Orchestra

I’m finding myself more and more impressed with Kid Rock and his attitudes toward music, the music industry, and local commitment. Last year, there was this article which spoke of Rock’s anger towards ticket fees as well as beer and t-shirt prices at concerts. Now, Kid Rock has announced that he will be teaming up with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for a benefit concert for the DSO. The goal is to raise $1 million for the beleaguered outfit.
Rock stated, “I’m a musician, I care about the field. My love’s for all music. I don’t go to the orchestra, I don’t know that I’ve ever been to the DSO. But I know that people do, and it’s a part of our culture and our history and our city, and it’s another cornerstone that makes our city great. To see that fall by the wayside, knowing I can do something about it, wasn’t something I was comfortable with.”

Soen, the group formed by ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, has released a video of an acoustic performance of their song Ideate, which comes off their debut album Cognitive (review). The song translates beautifully and the dark, creepy atmosphere of the room really helps set the tone and mood. I’d definitely give this a listen if you’ve got a free three minute block. Motörhead Does NOT Want People To Buy The New Box Set

Motörhead Does NOT Want People To Buy The New Box Set
Rock band Motörhead have gone on record saying that a new box set entitled Complete Early Years should NOT be purchased by anyone, even super hardcore fans. The reason? It costs too much. Like, $600 too much. The company that put out the box set has the rights to early recordings and is putting out a 15-disc box set in a (admittedly awesome) custom skull box with light up red eyes.
“Unfortunately greed once again rears its yapping head,” says frontman Lemmy Kilmister. “I would advise against it even for the most rabid completists!”

Dethklok’s Brendon Small Presents Galaktikon

Brendon Small, the mastermind behind Dethklok, the band on Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, has announced the upcoming release of his side project Galaktikon. The album will come out this April and coincides with the Season 4 premiere of Metalocalypse.
“This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end,” states Brendon Small.

Brendon Small paired with Dethklok drummer (legendary metal drummer) Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory) and Dethklok bassist Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) as well as Dethklok engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild.

Finally! A Sample Of A New Garbage Song

Finally! A Sample Of A New Garbage Song

The news that Garbage was returning this year with a new album sent fans into a frenzy. After all, it had been seven years since their last studio album, Bleed Like Me. Now, with Not Your Kind Of People coming out on May 15th, the band has decided to award those of us who were alone on Valentines Day with a snippet of a song entitled I Hate Love. It took me a listen or two but I’m definitely digging it. Check it out below!

The band states: “We have the most incredible fans. We are overwhelmed by the amazing “I Hate Love” art we received from all of you from across the globe. As a Valentine’s Day treat, here’s a sneak peak of a new song called “I Hate Love’ showcasing some of your art. We weren’t able to include all of your love-hating creations in the video clip, but we will put together “I Hate Love” photo albums on our Facebook page today to display everyone’s work. We can’t thank you all enough for inspiring us.”

[Review] Soen ‘Cognitive’

 [Review] Soen Cognitive
When word came that Martin Lopez quit Swedish prog-metal band Opeth, I was stunned. After all, he brought a certain sound and inventiveness that I had come to appreciate and deeply enjoy. But when I heard of his new project Soen, I immediately had high hopes. The description and influences cited were more than enough to pique my interest. This sounded like a project where Lopez could take his skills and only expand on them. And with their debut release Cognitive, Soen aims to enter the progressive metal genre in a huge way.

Our Lady Peace Discusses New Album ‘Curve’

Members of the rock band Our Lady Peace are discussing their thoughts and emotions when entering the studio to record their eighth studio album, Curve, which comes out April 3, 2012. The band has already released a single entitled Heavyweight (iTunes) and has announced a short US tour this spring (tour dates below).

“This is the record we’ve been trying to make for the past 10 years. There’s something to be said about being beaten up and being able to dust yourself off and get back in the ring,” says vocalist/lyricist Raine Maida.
“[Co-producer] Jason [Lader] and I had a very frank discussion about the early recordings of Curve before he came in,” says Maida.  ”He asked why we weren’t making a record that we’d like to listen to ourselves. That was our impetus for abandoning what we started, bringing in Jason and truly challenging ourselves to come up with something more authentic and inspired. He helped us operate without the filter predicated by walking the major label tightrope.”

[WTF] American Idol Winner Adam Lambert The New Singer Of Queen?

adamlambert [WTF] American Idol Winner Adam Lambert The New Singer Of Queen?
According to Rolling Stone, American Idol winner Adam Lambert (featured above in all his Photoshopped glory) has stated that he will be the new singer of British rock band Queen. In an interview with the U.K.’s Daily Star, Lambert stated, “The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie [Mercury] and the band by singing some fucking great songs. It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would’ve been proud of.”
A representative for Hollywood Records says, “The Daily Star item only mentions that Adam may perform with Queen at Sonisphere. This is not confirmed. Nothing has been signed. However, if this were to happen, Queen would be returning to the setting of their final concert with Freddie Mercury, which took place in 1986.”
Below is my response.
