Tells the story of a new father facing eviction who is reunited with a high school friend when a wealthy couple challenges them to the ultimate game of dare, testing the limits of physical pain and morality in exchange for cash.
A story that revolves around four strangers who find themselves stranded in a deserted, supernatural forest. The strangers seek shelter in an abandoned cabin and must learn to trust one another and work together to find a way out of the woods.
Short: This group of reckless and self-involved “twenty somethings” quickly discover that disrespecting the locals can have disastrous circumstances…
Long:A group of rude and insensitive city kids take a weekend vacation to Briar Lake, a picturesque town overlooking a beautiful lake, which to most outsiders would appear to be a peaceful small town. Having zero respect for anyone outside of their group, they are confronted by the hostile and eccentric residents. Following a bizarre experience in the town’s diner, they quickly retreat to the protection of their borrowed vacation lake house, where they plan to let loose and celebrate their weekend out of the city.
After an unexpected visit from the local police, the long weekend is cut short. Two of the locals have been brutally murdered, and this group of “outsiders” become the prime suspects. When the string of murders spins out of control, the group must come together to unravel Briar Lake’s sordid past and uncover the hidden secrets.
A vacation is always fun until you die!
A young writer (Ventimiglia) and his wife (Sarah Shahi) are struggling with the loss of their child but just as they are trying to get their lives back on track a hysterical young woman (Paxton), turns up at their secluded house in the middle of the night, claiming she is being chased by mysterious masked men. Letting her stay the night the couple are soon drawn into the horror when the unknown force starts to stalk them, a terrifying game of cat and mouse ensues, resulting in a shocking conclusion and one of the most chilling film finales of recent years.
The story of a group of friends celebrating New Year’s Eve in London by playing a provocative game that ultimately gets terribly out of control.

I was bummed close to midnight of the opening night of SXSW. I had just sat through the debacle that was the Evil Dead remake (I refuse to use Fede Alvarez’s pet phrase “re-birth”). Granted, I was fortunate enough to watch the masterful Bruce Campbell completely steal the show from his ED contemporary thespians during an extra long-running Q&A. After that was E.L. Katz’s Cheap Thrills, starring the adorable duo from Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Patrick Healy and Sara Paxton.
And I’m definitely glad I made time for it. READ MORE

Keeping up with the ongoing SXSW Film Festival, Evan Dickson has posted his review of Cheap Thrills, the E.L. Katz-directed genre thriller that was just acquired by Drafthouse Films for a limited theatrical and VOD run later this year.
Starring Pat Healy, Sara Paxton, David Koechner, Ethan Embry and Amanda Fuller, the Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo penned screenplay tells the story of a new father facing eviction who is reunited with a high school friend when a wealthy couple challenges them to the ultimate game of dare, testing the limits of physical pain and morality in exchange for cash.
“It’s the rare slow burn that maintains interest by gradually increasing speed rather than simply leaping from 0 to 60 in the final 10 minutes,” says Dickson. “A great horror satire that would incidentally make a great stage play, this is a 100% can’t miss film for any viewer that wants to be sickened, surprised and impressed.”

One of the great benefits of a film festival like SXSW is being able to see movies before you have a chance to pre-visualize them. With Cheap Thrills, I think I popped up a few casting announcements last year but, as far as exposure goes, I hadn’t seen a trailer or any kind of imagery. And that’s exactly how I recommend you go into the movie.
Director E.L. Katz (making one hell of a feature debut), along with writers Trent Haaga (Deadgirl) and David Chirchirillo (the upcoming Dances With Werwolves), has fashioned a film with such a nuanced and inevitable sense of escalation that going in blind is probably the best way to approximate the nightmare that protagonist Pat Healy (The Innkeepers) finds himself stepping into after a long lost best friend (Can’t Hardly Wait‘s Ethan Embry in a heretofore unseen macho mode) and two strangers (Anchorman‘s David Koechner and The Innkeepers‘s Sara Paxton) decide they want to party with him one night.
With all of the action taking place in two primary locations, Katz and company have fashioned an insular and intimate saga of an epically bad night of one-upmanship that perfectly mirrors the stranglehold the 1% of this country have over the 99%. But it’s more than political parable, it’s entertaining, funny, disgusting and ultimately devastating. It never stops to lecture you on any kind of political or sociological talking point, instead it cleverly keeps racking up the stakes with an impressive bit of economy. This is not a film that wastes time condescending to its audience and it wisely sidesteps any heavy-handedness that might have resulted from over explanation. It’s a rarity to see such assuredness and restraint in a film, and the fact that you’re seeing it in the work of a first time director is something of a miracle.
All of the performances are great but I was surprised by Koechner and Paxton in particular. Paxton has traded in the pixie-ish innocence of her past roles to embody the dead-eyed boredom of a trophy wife who is aware that her sense of humanity is flickering out. And Koechner turns in a masterful performance simply by re-calibrating his jovial brand of humor to fit the material. It’s as if Katz saw all of the masculine, slippery chumminess of his earlier work and knew that, dropped into a different context, it could mean something else entirely. Sort of like when Paul Thomas Anderson was able to channel Adam Sandler’s inherent rage into the wounded and disturbed Barry Egan of Punchdrunk Love.
Cheap Thrills is a hugely pleasant, almost out of nowhere surprise (I wasn’t even aware that the film had been finished when it showed up on the SXSW schedule). It’s the rare slow burn that maintains interest by gradually increasing speed rather than simply leaping from 0 to 60 in the final 10 minutes. A great horror satire that would incidentally make a great stage play, this is a 100% can’t miss film for any viewer that wants to be sickened, surprised and impressed.

Innkeepers co-stars Pat Healy and Sara Paxton will be sharing the screen again in Cheap Thrills, the directorial debut from screenwriter E.L. Katz. David Koechner, Ethan Embry and Amanda Fuller also star. The script was written by Trent Haaga, who wrote Deadgirl.
The film tells “the story of a new father facing eviction who is reunited with a high school friend when a wealthy couple challenges them to the ultimate game of dare, testing the limits of physical pain and morality in exchange for cash.”
Cheap Thrills is being produced by Travis Stevens of Snowfort Pictures and alongside Gabriel Cowan and John Suits of New Artists Alliance.
It was announced back in March that Milo Ventimiglia (Pathology,The Divide) would be starring alongside “The L Word’s” Sarah Shahi and Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left, Truth or Dare, Shark Night 3D, The Innkeepers) in the 3-D thriller Static. Apparently they’re all wrapped up because we’ve got a trailer for the film.
Directed by Todd Levin, “As a young novelist and his wife are coping with the loss of their child, their lives are turned upside down when a panicked girl appears at their home in the middle of the night with stories of masked intruders stalking her. That night, the stalkers strike, sending the couple on a horrific game of cat and mouse, where they are forced to uncover shocking details from their past that may be the reason for the attack.”
Static is one of the first low-budget features to be shot in full 3D. Levin used a camera rig designed specifically for the producers and director to hold two Sony PMW-F3 cameras — Sony’s answer to the RED 3D camera — and control costs. The movie’s budget was reported to be below $1 million.

There’s a lot to love about Ti West’s The Innkeepers. It’s a smart, funny character study that just happens to be centered around a genuinely fun and creepy ghost story.
The film made my 2011 ‘Best-Of’ List and I included Sara Paxton’s performance as Claire as one of The Five Best Performances of the year. I’m definitely a fan of the film so it was a no-brainer for me to jump at the opportunity to interview both Ti and Sara when they swung through town on the film’s publicity tour.
We also touched on various upcoming projects for the pair (including VHS and which feature Ti might tackle next). Hit the jump to check it out! READ MORE

With nine projects currently in-development, Shark Night 3D director David R. Ellis is a busy man. Although a live-action adaptation of anime Kite is his next project, Ellis has revealed details about two horror films on his “To Do List.”
Sara Paxton is attached to star in The Briar Lake Murders and Ellis, who’s directing, told Australian stringer Maria Lewis (@moviemazz) that the film follows a traditional killer in the woods storyline.
“It’s a movie about these kids that go on vacation and there’s a serial killer out there,” he said. “It’s got a good script and good people involved; I’m just not sure how soon that’s going to happen.”
The more interesting of the two sounds like The Thing-inspired Clock Tower which Ellis said is a “cool” supernatural horror. (Editor’s note: The project has been in development for over 6 years now and this is the first time it has been reported that Ellis is attached.) READ MORE
