The Scribbler

The film is a noir sci-fi action thriller about a young woman recently released from a mental hospital, and continuing a treatment programme to rid her of her alternate personalities. She moves into a halfway house for mental patients where the residents begin to die at an unusual rate.

Alternate: The Siamese Burn is an experimental machine designed to eliminate multiple personalities. And it works. Suki is down to her last unwanted identity. But now she’s losing time, and the machine is changing, doing something new. Something that’s going to turn her world inside out. And that unwanted identity… what do you do when it turns out to be you?

Skinny Dip

After being dared to go skinny dipping in stormy waters, a buttoned up Holly Haven (played by Grey) loses her glasses, washes up at the wrong bonfire and finds herself the unwitting centerpiece of the local football team’s yearly “freshman initiation” – a heinous ritual that involves the team’s newest member raping a defenseless and overpowered Holly.

When a female motorcycle cop shows up on the scene, Holly assumes justice will be served. But in this town, football’s a religion and the cops are high priests. The jocks are let go with a slap on the wrist, and Holly’s forced to defend herself yet again – this time, against the very person who was supposed to save her.

With the help of a mysterious jolt of electricity, Holly destroys the evil cop, steals her uniform and appropriates her motorcycle. Armed with a Billy club, shotgun, service revolvers and plenty of brains, Holly sets out to avenge herself. In the process, she comes up against bad cops, a corrupt chief of police, and a stone cold killer by the name of “El Tigre.”

Sasha Grey Undresses For Elijah Wood In This Poster For Nacho Vigalondo’s ‘Open Windows’

Extraterrestrial and Time Crimes director Nacho Vigalondo recently wrapped Open Windows, described as an innovative, high-tech suspense thriller unfolding on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet.

Starring Elijah Wood (Maniac) and Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience, Would You Rather?), the plot revolves around a desperate search by Wood’s character for an actress (played by Grey), who has been abducted by vicious villain Chord, played by British actor Neil Maskell.

Head inside for the poster! It definitely does a nice job of selling the film as well as Wood’s new career turn into “pervy killer” territory (though it looks like he’s playing the good guy in this, maybe he doesn’t kill anybody). READ MORE

IFC Sets Dates For ‘Would You Rather’ and ‘Shining’ Documentary ‘Room 237′

IFC continues to push out genre product as they’ve slated two for the first quarter of 2013.

Fans of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining won’t want to miss the conspiracy thriller doc Room 237, releasing on March 29. “After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.

Would You Rather, starring Brittany Snow, Jeffrey Combs and Sascha Grey, has been slated for release on February 8. “In the wake of her parent’s death, Iris struggles to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. Shepard Lambrick, a seemingly philanthropic aristocrat, expresses an interest in helping them. When he invites her to an exclusive dinner party, she accepts. Also attending the dinner party are seven more desperate individuals. They soon find themselves trapped in Lambrick’s mansion and forced to play a sadistic game of Would You Rather, where the winner will be awarded untold amounts of money. As the game progresses, the dilemmas Iris and the other players face grow increasingly deadly.” Trailer inside.

Both films should be playing in New York theaters around the same dates. READ MORE

New Image From ‘The Scribbler’ And A Taste Of What We Saw On Set!

Last week I made a late night trek out to LA’s Linda Vista Hospital to visit the set of The Scribbler. I wasn’t at all familiar with the source material so I didn’t know exactly what to expect. What I wasn’t expecting was to catch a glimpse of a film that looks as fun as this one looks. Having subsequently flipped through a few pages of the graphic novel upon which its based, I can say that what I saw on set maintains the tone of the piece but also very much feels like its very own horror movie.

While I’m not going to publish my fill report until we get closer to the film’s release, I will say that I got a glimpse of “the Siamese Burn” – a nasty contraption – in one of the hospital’s abandoned rooms and saw a couple of key scenes being filmed. One of the moments I really responded to involved a touching, quiet exchange between Garret Dillahunt‘s character and Katie Cassidy‘s skeleton-leotard clad Suki that takes place at the foot of a giant pool of blood. Dillahunt (No Country For Old Men, Looper, The Assassination Of Jesse James) is of course one of the finer character actors currently working, but I was also struck by how unrecognizable Cassidy was. It’s nice to see her tackling a role that really gives her something to do and it effectively washed clean my first impression of her from 2010′s A Nightmare On Elm Street. She’s a much more gifted performer than that film allowed her to be.

In addition to chats with Dillahunt and Cassidy my full report will also contain interviews with Eliza Dushku (Wrong Turn, “Dollhouse”), Billy Campbell (“The Killing”) and director John Suits.

In the film, “Suki (Cassidy), a young woman confronting her destructive mental illness using “The Siamese Burn”, an experimental machine designed to eliminate multiple personalities. Head inside for a full look at the still, which contains some cryptic clues about “the Siamese Burn.” The Scribbler also stars Michelle Trachtenberg (Black Christmas, “Gossip Girl”), Gina Gershon (Killer Joe), Michael Imperioli (The Lovely Bones) and Sasha Grey (The Girfriend Experience).
