Ridley Scott Surprised ‘Alien’ Sequels Didn’t Explore The “Bigger Picture”

Ridley Scott Surprised Alien Sequels Didnt Explore The Bigger Picture

The boys over in the UK at Empire Magazine have done some solid reporting getting Ridley Scott to finally open up about the Alien connection in Twentieth Century Fox’s forthcoming Prometheus, which is a prequel to Scott’s 1979 film that brought horror to the blackest depths of space. It all begins with the elusive Space Jockey, which is featured prominently in the trailers:

years! Years, years, years,” he stresses, of Alien‘s space traveller subplot. “I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn’t touched upon that, instead of evolving into some other fantastic story. They missed the biggest question of them all: who’s the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There’s all kinds of questions.

Another question for Scott is the film’s rating. He hints that the violence may have been toned-down enough to facilitate a PG-13 rating, but intriguingly suggests that the impact will match the R-grade shocks of Alien and Aliens. “The question is, do you go for the PG-13, [which] financially makes quite a difference, or do you go for what it should be, which is R? Essentially, it’s kinda R.” He adds, “It’s not just about the blood, it’s about ideas that are very stressful. I’m not an idiot, but I’ll do everything I can to get the most aggressive film I can.

What’s so interesting about the rating conversation is that I literally forgot that was an issue during pre-production. In fact, Fox allegedly nearly shut down the film during a quarrel with Scott. I’m kind of glad that none of us are harping on the fact that it will be PG-13. Looking at the footage, I personally don’t even care anymore. You? READ MORE

Screengrabs From New Prometheus Trailer Reveal Major Clues, Ultimate Alien Connections!

Special thanks to BD reader ‘Fritte Öhman’ out of Sweden for the above and below screengrabs from the latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, all of which provided major plot clues to the mystery surrounding the Alien prequel. And while Scott denies any connection, the above grab should end the conversation once and for all. Yes, that looks like a Xenomorph to me, too.

“Lost”‘s Damon Lindelof has penned this brilliant sci-fi horror film where he, along with Scott, creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which “a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

In theaters June 8 from Fox, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Guy Pearce, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Benedict Wong, Emun Elliott, Ben Foster, Patrick Wilson and Ian Whyte all star. READ MORE

Ridley Scott Conceiving ‘Prometheus’ Sequel

 Ridley Scott Conceiving Prometheus Sequel

Ridley Scott’s return to Alien franchise was originally conceived as a trilogy all stitched together to set up his iconic 1979 sci-fi horror pic.

With the prequel Prometheus hitting theaters June 8 in a flurry of hype, Scott is once again thinking “sequel”.

In speaking to EW about the upcoming Blade Runner, Scott reveals that he’s “also thinking about what the hell I might do for a ‘Prometheus 2.’” as he knocks the wood coffee table and grins.

Those keeping up with the Prometheus mythos know that the film is supposed to set up exactly how the dead Space Jockey crash landed on the planet. This still leaves plenty of years (or millions of years) to explore. READ MORE

Already featured in magazines, below you’ll now find a clean look at Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green in Twentieth Century Fox’s Prometheus. The duo apparently have oxygen and are standing in front of some alien writing. I believe it says, “This is not a prequel to Alien, but actually, it is.” Just a wild guess.

On June 8 Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. It’ll be presented in real 3-D. READ MORE

‘Men in Black 3′ Trailer Asks You to Take a Leap of Faith

Men in Black 3 Trailer Asks You to Take a Leap of Faith

It’s no secret that the production for Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black 3 has been a troubled one (the movie is STILL filming pickups). This time around Will Smith travels back in time to 1969 in order to save a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) and avert a world-ending disaster. The only disaster is attempting to do a time travel film – on a short time frame nonetheless. Word on the street is that the screenplay was still being written as production got underway, a giant no-no if you’re going to leap from year to year. Plot holes? Yes please.

Still, I have to admit that the newly released trailer is a bit eye-catching. While it attempts to deliver on the humor (and fails completely), some of the concepts are pretty rad (especially the idea that he has to jump to time jump). Take a look inside and tell us what you think.

In theaters May 25 from Columbia Pictures, Tommy Lee Jones, Jemaine Clement, and Emma Thompson also star. READ MORE

In addition, Tom Rothman, CEO of Fox, spoke with MTV about the recent trailer leak. “I heard some of it leaked, which wasn’t so good,” he said. “That’s not fair. It’s heartbreakingly unfair, because … the quality of the visuals is as spectacularly beautiful, shot in 3-D compositionally the way only a master could do it,” Rothman added. “For some early, early, early, early half-baked, half-assed test to leak, it’s so unfair.

And speaking on the Alien connection he explains: “I’ll tell you the great thing: It’s way bigger than that. The ideas are way bigger, way more original and — it’s a scary word — way more profound.

Fox has Prometheus slated for launch on June 8, 2012. READ MORE

Robert Rodriguez Forgot All About ‘Predators’ Already

Robert Rodriguez Forgot All About Predators Already

In talking with Playlist, writer director Robert Rodriguez chatted up all of his upcoming projects, while also making the realization that he originally wanted to produce a sequel to Predators, the quasi-reboot of the classic 1987 sci-fi horror Predator.

I haven’t talked to them [20th Century Fox] in a while. I know they liked the idea of doing another one,” Rodriguez explained. “I should probably call and check in. I’ve just been busy doing these other things.

For a guy who constantly pushed how passionate he was about the original, to completely “forget” about it makes me question is credibility. Nimrod Antal directed the R-rated reboot/sequel that referenced characters from the original, while following a new group of toughies to battle the race of alien Predator. READ MORE

The Salt Company (Grabbers) also announced a second sci-fi-themed horror film set in space. Being directed by Coffin Rock‘s Rupert Glasson, Skylab‘s tagline teases: “NASA told them it was the Soviets…they were wrong.” It has a sort of Apollo 18 feel to it, but hopefully this guy is better.

‘Skylab’ is a taut, claustrophobic, edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thriller in which three astronauts find themselves stranded 200 miles above the Earth and forced into a desperate fight to the death with a malevolent alien. Latest ‘Apollo 18′ Clip Keeps You in the Dark

I applaude Dimension Films for taking the Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity path and keeping all released content to a minimum. Personally, the less I know about a film going into the theater, the better. With zero images released thus far, Bloody Disgusting scored an exclusive TV spot clip from Apollo 18 that’s pretty similar to the previous released few. The only info released: the mission to the moon is a controlled experiment, the astronauts weren’t given the truth, they find a dead body from a previous mission, and then one of the dudes gets infected. What comes next is anybody’s guess.
