Three New Teasers For ‘Sinister’ Fuzz It Up A Bit

Summit just released three teasers from the upcoming Sinister and they’re actually kind of like the “American Horror Story” teasers in that the footage they show is heavily manipulated and not how it appears in the final product. Go see the movie, though I’m starting to worry that they’ve shared too much. You might want to skip these.

Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance all star in this horror flick from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson. Here’s Brad’s mixed review. I liked it more. Head inside to find the footage! We’ve also included three previously released clips! READ MORE

[Interview] Producer Jason Blum Talks ‘Insidious 2′, ‘Paranormal Activity 5′, ‘Dark Skies’ And ‘The Purge’ At The Opening Of ‘Blumhouse Of Horrors’!

Last night I attended a preview of Jason Blum’s Los Angeles haunted attraction, “The Blumhouse Of Horrors”. While what I saw wasn’t 100% finished, it was certainly impressive. It’s not so much a maze as it is a building full of haunts, characters, magic and smoke. I took a guided tour, which is not a VIP thing, it’s how the attraction is meant to be experienced since your guides are pretty creepy as well. There’s a lot of cool stuff to see (and feel – I know BD alum Brian Collins even got zapped). There’s also a neat feature that had the claustrophobic in me absolutely reeling. If you live in LA, and are a fan of haunted houses, I certainly recommend it.

The Blumhouse of Horrors opens on October 4th and will be open to the public Thursday through Saturday throughout October. And it’s open the entire week of Halloween. Info and tickets are available on the official site. You can also follow the Blumhouse Facebook and Twitter for more info.

After experiencing the attraction I sat down with Jason Blum to talk about his inspiration for the experience and how he tailored it to fit the building’s unique space. We also talked about some if his upcoming films. Insidious 2 seems to be just a click away and the existence of Paranormal Activity 5 seems to be a given at this point. We also talk about Dark Skies and the Ethan Hawke-starring Vigilandia, which is now titled The Purge. Head inside for the interview, it’s short but sweet! READ MORE

[BD Review] Evan Thinks ‘Sinister’ Delivers On Its Promise

Summit’s Sinister plays Fantastic Fest this weekend (a few weeks ahead of its official release date on October 12th). While my review was heavily mixed on the film (favorable by a hair), Evan Dickson found a lot more to like.

As Ellison makes his way through the tapes, accompanied by copious amounts of whiskey, it’s hard not to be impressed. These images are never less than unsettling and occasionally they’re downright horrific. This is the real coup of the film. Derrickson has touched upon something truly indelible in the construction of these moments. They’re not gory, but they’re unflinching. He lets you see more than most filmmakers do, yet still knows when to pull back at the exact right time required to maximize the intended impact.

A Lot Of ‘Sinister’ Scares In New TV Spot

I’m super perplexed by the marketing campaign for Summit’s Sinister, but not because it’s bad. The imagery released definitely catches the eye, and I’m sure has many of you excited. I saw the movie this past March at the SXSW Film Festival blind, and what was scary about the movie is being shown in all of these trailers and TV Spots. It’s just kind of a bummer that some of the film’s “power” is being taken away in order to sell the product. Anyways, check out the new Spot with lots of Mr. Boogie.

‘Sinister’ Director Joins NYPD To Hunt Creatures In ‘Beware the Night’

Update: The Wrap’s initial story was incorrect, Paul Boardman co-wrote the script with Derrickson.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day The Earth Stood Still) has signed on to direct the paranormal police thriller, Beware the Night and will also be re-writing the script, a representative for Derrickson reveals to TheWrap.

Familiar territory for Derrickson, “The story is set in a paranormal world and follows a New York police officer investigating real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark.

The lead role was offered to Mark Wahlberg who passed on the project, according to a rep for Screen Gems, which is producing the film. The project also reportedly involves Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney.

Last year, Derrickson signed on to direct Two Eyes Starring, a remake of the Dutch thriller, Zwart Water with Charlize Theron for Summit Entertainment.

Three More Added To West Memphis Three Movie ‘Devil’s Knot’

Collette Wolfe 61212 Three More Added To West Memphis Three Movie Devils Knot

Sweet Hereafter director Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three drama Devil’s Knot is about to start shooting and has made a few new additions to its cast. Collette Wolfe (pictured above; Young Adult), Kris Polaha (“The Ringer”) and Justin Çastor (“Glee”) have joined the cast.

Per Deadline, “Kris Polaha will be playing public defender Val Price in the movie about the conviction of the West Memphis 3. Collette Wolfe has joined the film as Firth’s character’s assistant Glori Shettles. Justin Castor is talks to play James Baldwin, one of the WM3.

The pic is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2002 book “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three,” which chronicled the prolonged murder trial of defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who served 18 years in prison before being released in August. The trio were accused of killing Christopher Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch, three 8-year-old boys who were found brutally murdered and hog-tied in a wooded area of West Memphis, Arkansas known as Robin Hood Hills.

They join recent addition Kristopher Higgins. The film stars Reese Witherspoon (Freeway, Legally Blonde) as Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the victims. Hobbs originally believed that Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley murdered her son, but as the case dragged on and more details became available, she came to believe that the trio did not commit the heinous crime. Colin Firth (A Single Man) will also star.

Mark Sevi wrote the original draft of the screenplay, with the current draft penned by Scott Derrickson (whose Sinister has some really great scares) and Paul Boardman.

Awesome ‘Sinister’ Posters Spread Blood Across Theater Walls!

Once you see him, nothing can save you.

Lionsgate has spread the blood on the walls of theaters as they’ve unveiled their official one-sheet for their R-rated supernatural spooker Sinister, which opens in theaters October 5. Both the motion poster and standard art carry the above tagline and display a girl spreading blood across a wall. In the blood, a tease of the entity known as “Mr. Boogie.”

Sinister is a frightening new thriller from the producer of the Paranormal Activity films and Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. “Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.

I caught the film as a surprise screening at this past March’s SXSW. While I wasn’t a huge fan, it’s still pretty f*cking scary.

West Memphis Three Movie ‘Devil’s Knot’ Now Greenlit, Starts Shooting Next Month

Reese Witherspoon 51612 West Memphis Three Movie Devils Knot Now Greenlit, Starts Shooting Next Month

Sweet Hereafter director Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three drama Devil’s Knot has been percolating for a while but is now all set to start shooting. A greenlight was given to the pic in anticipation of its rights being sold at Cannes.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “New York-based motion picture production and investment company Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce the project, which The Weinstein Co. is debuting to foreign buyers at the Marche du Film this week in Cannes. CAA is handling domestic rights.

‘Sinister’ Gets A Bloody Banner Poster

Sinister42012 Sinister Gets A Bloody Banner Poster

Some promo materials for Summit Entertainment’s Sinister (review) are beginning to emerge at this year’s Cinemacon and this creepy banner-style poster smears more blood across its landscape than you might expect. I remember when that much blood would get a poster rejected by the MPAA, but I suppose that’s no longer the case. In any case, it’s pretty nifty.

Directed by The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘s Scott Derrickson, the film stars Ethan Hawke, James Ranson, and Juliet Rylance. Penned by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, “the story follows a journalist who moves his family into a house where another family was murdered. After moving in, he uncovers found footage that leads to clues about the murders.

[BD Review] Sinister Is Super Scary But Doesnt Always Add Up

Summit Entertainment’s Sinister had a “secret” screening last night at The SXSW Film Festival in Austin. I had to put “secret” in quotes because a certain trade magazine decided to spoil the surprise just because they could. Directed by The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘s Scott Derrickson, the film stars Ethan Hawke, James Ranson, and Juliet Rylance and there’s been quite a bit of anticipation for it, especially considering that it doesn’t open until October 5th. Sadly, the film didn’t live up to expectations. Mr. Disgusting writes in with his review.

While the chiller will cloud your mind with extreme visuals and a brooding score/sound design, you shouldn’t be tricked into thinking this is a good movie… Sinister is a plot-laden mess that requires an incredibly high amount of suspension of disbelief. The best way to describe it is ’8MM’ meets ‘Paranormal Activity’. In an odd turn of events, this film is still highly recommended for those seeking one good scare and an unnerved stomach, it’s highly effective.

Penned by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, “the story follows a journalist who moves his family into a house where another family was murdered. After moving in, he uncovers found footage that leads to clues about the murders.

‘Devil’s Knott’ Just Got Family Friendly. That’s Kinda Lame.

While she once was an edgy upcoming starlette (Freeway, American Psycho, Fear and S.F.W.), Reese Witherspoon is now a family friendly actress that stars in movies like Four Christmases, Monsters vs Aliens, Vanity Fair and Legally Blonde. It’s weird announcing her addition to Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three drama Devil’s Knot. It makes me nervous.

The pic is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three,” which chronicled the prolonged murder trial of defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who served 18 years in prison before being released in August. Egoyan also had a hand in rewriting the script with Boardman.

‘Emily Rose’ Director Teams With Charlize Theron for ‘Zwart’ Redo

Zwart101811 Emily Rose Director Teams With Charlize Theron for Zwart Redo

Scott Derrickson, who is currently working on Sinister for Summit Entertainment, will be getting behind the camera for the long-gestured English-language remake of the Dutch thriller Two Eyes Staring (Zwart Water), which has one of the most idiotic twists in the past few years.

Summit is also getting behind this redo with Charlize Theron (Prometheus) attached to produce and star, reports THR.

Derrickson, the writer-director behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Day the Earth Stood Still, will helm the remake from a script he wrote with Emily Rose collaborator Paul Boardman.

‘Zwart Water’ centers on a nine-year girl old who discovers that her new friend is not only sinister but also is her mother’s dead twin. Theron is attached to play the mother, who is not quite right in the head, as they say.

The movie, which was released in Europe last year, was re-titled Two Eyes Staring when hit international circuits, most recently playing at Fantastic Fest in September.
