Vamp Hunting Continues This Week In ‘American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest’

I finally figured out why “American Vampire” has been such a success. Scott Snyder is actually part an alien life form known for their ability to create stories that dumfound the human race. One day, he will consume us all, but not before he gives us a few more incredible comics. Last months issue of the “American Vampire” concluded the ‘Ghost War’ arc in a big way, leaving the future of the series open for just about anything. The Survival of the Fittest mini-series has lived up to the standards of the original and next week brings the second to last ish. With the ever-increasing number of books coming out between the tie-ins, the crossovers, and the new series, we’ve got to limit our list of comics for the week somehow. Whether you’ve been into comics since you were a young’un, or you’re new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books to read. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #5

Did you really think I would have picked anything other than Gates of Gotham this week? Snyder and Higgins have been working to shape this series from the very first issue, and almost every page feels like it’ll hold some relevance in the end. The secret of ‘The Architect’ is out, the Bat-family knows who he is and his devious plans, now all that’s left to do is bash his face in and turn him over to Gordon. The ghost of Gotham’s past has reared its ugly head, and despite the corrupt history, Batman is trying control something that he knows is way larger than himself. The creative team has done wonders to bring fans a memorable Batman story leading into the new reboot, and now that Gotham City’s dark history is in the open, the future of Batman is looking brighter than ever. Was the really any other option for this week? This is it Bat-fans, the culmination of Snyder’s hard and brilliant work over the past few months. Oh, and it’s also the final f*ckin’ issue of Detective Comics before the big reboot. Whether you’re excited for the New 52 or skeptical, it’s undeniable that this is a landmark issue in Batman history. Snyder has been building and building in this arc to reveal how heartless Commissioner Gordon’s son has become after years of living in the shadow of others. No doubt this issue will tie into the new series come September, so don’t miss this extra-size finale to Snyder’s epic Batman story. Read on for the skinny…

Easily one of the most storied and consistently good monthly stories to hit shelves month in and month out for better part of the past century has been DC Comics’ “DETECTIVE COMICS”, and thanks to thge upcoming relaunch the series will finally be coming to an end this week before it is officially relaunched in September. Beyond the break you can get a very special sneak peek at the groundbreaking final issue before it hits shelves this week. Read on for the skinny…

OMFG Of The Day: Snyder And Albuquerque Tease The Death Of Skinner Sweet?!

Recently things have been quite volatile within the pages of “AMERICAN VAMPIRE”, as the gang have found themselves captive to things more sinister than just vampires. Even Skinner Sweet is in the thick of it, and it looks like the series’ anti-hero might not come out of it unscathed. Below you can take a look at the teaser image that was released at San Diego ComiCon, and discuss…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Severed’ Issue #1

By now I am sure you are all very familiar with Scott Snyder. After all, the creator has singlehandedly put the horror genre in a sleeper-hold even Hulk Hogan would applaud. However, even though the “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” scribe has been earning his Industry Merit Badges mostly due to his frighteningly good run on DC’s “DETECTIVE COMICS”, he hasn’t even begun to forget about his roots in the horror industry. Instead of taking the road so many others have in the past once they see stardom, Snyder has embraced the genre and sought to not only dabble in it, but to master it. Case in point – “SEVERED” Issue #1, or as I like to call it: “Potential Horror Mini-Series Of The Year”. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PULL & HOLD: August 3rd, 2011

Welcome to the weekly previews for August 3rd, 2011 here at Graphic Content! Let me preface this week by saying that there are A LOT of good comics coming out this week. Though every week has it’s highlights, I believe this is the best of the summer with several books by Snyder, the start of Spider Island, and the second to last Flashpoint issue! Get ready for some time indoors this week because there are way too many books for you spend you days running around outside in the sun like a loser.

The truth is everyone would read all the books if they had the time and money, but in reality most of us don’t. Here you will find a little taste of some major comics being released each week, my take on them, and, as always, feels free to discuss below. Whether you have been into comics since you were a little one, or are new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books are for you. I’ve picked out some comics I feel will stand out in the coming week and listed them under their respective publisher, with over a dozen previews of some of your favorite books such as ”AMAZING SPIDER-MAN”, “GATES OF GOTHAM”, and “SWEET TOOTH”. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman Gates of Gotham’ #3

It should come as no surprise that Snyder’s Gates of Gotham would be my staff pick of the week. While it seems at this point that this has become a formal practice at Graphic Content, I swear it hasn’t. We’ve been flattering Snyder and Higgins for weeks now, and they just won’t seem to let up. Week after week Snyder brings the goods, and the scary thing…he’s only getting better. Gates of Gotham drags the entire Bat-gang on a wild ride into the past in order to explore Gotham’s criminal origins. Like any great cold case, the team is quickly discovering the mystery is far grander than they could have imagined, and it’s going to take a lot more than some simple detective work to solve it. Snyder and Higgins are giving fans what may just be the best final Batman story before Dick gives up the cowl and returns to his roll as Nightwing in September. Read on for the skinny…

OMFG Of The Day: DC Releases Bat-Family Solicits For October, Announces ‘Penguin’ And ‘Huntress’ Minis!

Easily the best part of the entire DC Comics Reboot controversy has been the announcements pertaining to “BATMAN” and all of his supporting characters. The franchise seems to be taking a major leap forward while other titles will be getting a fresh start, and that notion was furthered today as the publisher announced two more monthlies in the Bat-Universe with “PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE” and “HUNTRESS”. The titles (featured inside) will go on sale this Halloween, but beyond the break you can also check out the full solicit info and cover art for ALL the Batman related titles hitting shelves in October. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘American Vampire’ #16

It’s getting harder and harder to find a vampire story, whether in literature, film, or comics, that depicts the bloodsuckers in such a way that maintains their ferocity and ere of mystery. By now it’s even become cliché to hate on the Twilight series, and outright boring to read another rip on the sparkling vampires. It seems as though many writers don’t even care about vampire lore, but care only about the latest trend in literature to make a name for themselves. Luckily there are people like Scott Snyder who bring a sense of novelty to the vampire genre helping to continue the legacy of the most infamous of creatures. Maybe it’s best we leave our hatred for Twilight behind and start focusing on the true face of modern monsters, American Vampire. The creative team of Snyder and Albuquerque bring you an absolutely jaw dropping tale about vampires and the real horrors of living in a world with them. Snyder and Albuquerque bring vampire folklore of old into the modern era, making for one of the best horror comics on the shelves today. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #2

Last month Lonmonster and myself both chose “BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM” issue #1 as our pick of the week, and to stick with some sort of nonofficial tradition here at Graphic Content I suppose that it will be happening again this month with issue #2. That’s only half true, because my fellow staff writer and I just seem to have perfect taste in illustrated literature. Deep sarcasm aside (for now), Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins’ debut issue of the series was just as impressive as critics and fans everywhere had assumed it would be, and to put it bluntly the duo are single-handedly redefining the type of quality we come to expect each month out of a Bat-Title. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #2

A month ago Gates of Gotham #1 was my pick of the week, and I see no reason to change that this month. It should come as no surprise to say that Gotham is one of the darkest and most corrupt cities in the entire DC universe. Somewhere in the past, a heavy shadow fell over Gotham, inviting sinister villains to lurk in the darkness. This shady and enigmatic past is exactly where Snyder and Higgins (Detective Comics) are going in the already acclaimed mini-series, Gates of Gotham. Snyder and Higgins work their magic once more to take Bat-fans on a wild goose chase into the past of Gotham, before it was overcast with shadows and run by the criminally insane. As this will be one of the last times Dick wears the Batman cowl, there’s absolutely no reason for anyone to ignore this Bat-book. Read on for the Skinny…

GRAPHIC COLUMNS: Analyzing The DC Reboot – Lonmonster

Screw character rebirths, let’s reboot the entire universe! No characters are safe, no series will continue, run for the hills, this is an all out massacre of the entire DC catalog! As I’m sure you know, DC Comics has recently announced that, after the summer, all of their series will come to a close of some sort or another. DC plans to relaunch 52 brand spankin’ new books from issue #1, offering a crap-load of fresh story lines, new origins for some, and hundreds of modern costumes. Though our beloved heroes and events will lose much of their historic values, this DCU reboot probably isn’t a bad thing at all.

This week is going to be filled with awesome titles gracing the shelves of our local comic shops. That being said, I plan on dropping a lot of money on comics this week. However, I have chosen Scott Snyder’s “AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST” Issue #1 for my pick of the week. (This was originally tied with “GREENWAKE” for the staff pick.)

While there are quite a few publishers who have been shying away from the horror genre of late, publisher DC Comics is continuing to lead the charge towards the darker side of the industry. Case in point: todays announcement that the publisher will be releasing a handful of new titles this Fall, which includes such characters as “SWAMP THING”, “FRANKENSTEIN”, and even the “JUSTICE LEAGUE”! The titles will carry with them a glut of talent on the creative end from such creators as Scott Snyder (“AMERICAN VAMPIRE”), Jeff Lemire (“SWEET TOOTH”), and more! ‘Batman’ Cracks The Mystery Surrounding The Latest Mystery Surrounding Snyder’s ‘Detective Comics’!

I think that I, like many, can rest easily when I say that the absolute most impressive run of multiple monthly issues surrounding one singular character belongs to DC Comics’ “BATMAN”. It seems as if no matter what title you are picking up out of the Dark Knight’s catalogue, it is a good one, and much of that praise has to go to the writers. Case in point: “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” scribe Scott Snyder and his run on “DETECTIVE COMICS”. The writer is about ready to wrap-up his latest story arc, “HUNGRY CITY”, and if you make the jump you can check out a 5 page preview and get the entire synopsis before it hits stores tomorrow.
