For as much trouble as myself and the rest of the fearless (or reckless, depending on who you ask) crew of Graphic Content give the vampire genre, all those things are made better each month thanks to Vertigo Comics and scribe Scott Snyder with “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” (The unabashed commitment to Sparkle Motion is still completely irredeemable and assailable. There is no better time than 2011 to be a fan of DC Comics’ ever popular Caped Crusader. The protector of Gotham City has no shortage of exciting titles hitting store shelves week in and week out, and even the character’s supporting cast (“RED ROBIN”, “GOTHAM CITY SIRENS”) are thriving. With such a strong foundation and combination of moving parts, on top of a Blockbuster video game sequel on the way, “BATMAN” can simply do no wrong it seems. Adding to the already overly impressive library of titles this week will be the creative team of Scott Snyder (“AMERICAN VAMPIRE”) (who will be picking up the pen for his second story set within the world of the Caped Crusader) and Kyle Higgins (“CAPTAIN AMERICA”, “DETECTIVE COMICS”) with “GATES OF GOTHAM”. The series, which has been in development for quite some time now, will find itself bearing the heavy task of not only sewing up some old plot-holes, but also with setting up storylines for the months to come. Both Snyder and Higgins are rising stars at DC comics. Snyder is most famous for being the creator/writer of the widely praised Vertigo imprint, American Vampire. Here, the two team up to explore the history of Gotham, where it all went wrong, and the origins of its grimy underbelly. Based on their previous works, Gates of Gotham should be a fresh and original Batman mystery with lots of hooks to keep you reading. Snyder and Higgins have held strong in order to keep the majority of the plotline secret (it is a mystery story after all). (Updated With Official Press Release Beyond The Break) Fans of “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” and “BATMAN: DETECTIVE COMICS” scribe Scott Snyder will have even more to sink their teeth into this Summer as today the writer announced his plans to release an all new 7-part mini-series entitled “SEVERED” under the banner of Image Comics. The series will be co-written with Scott Tuft, and release its first issue on August 3rd with a cover price of $2.99. “Eisner nominated writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Detective Comics), writer Scott Tuft and New York Times Best-Selling artist Attila Futaki (Percy Jackson) have announced a new project with Image Comics, set to debut this August. Image has built a deserved reputation as the industry leader for providing readers with quality science fiction and horror material such as the massively popular titles THE WALKING DEAD, CHEW and HACK/SLASH, and like those titles, SEVERED is unlike any other monthly series and sure to be a hit with comic book and horror fans alike.

“SEVERED is a unique story that is extremely close to my heart, and in order to maintain complete creative control with the comic, Scott Tuft and I knew that it needed to be creator owned,” Synder commented. “We are extremely happy Image is giving us the platform to release SEVERED.”

With Scott Snyder’s run on “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” continuing strong over at DC flagship Vertigo Comics, it should come as no surprise that the publisher has announced plans to continue the series well into the Summer and beyond with another all new story-arc entitled “SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST”.
