Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Informant) is set to start monkeying around with the script for Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes 2 any day now. An initial draft was written by the writers of last year’s film, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. I actually think this is a great choice. Burns is a great writer who not only knows his diseases (something pointed out in the THR article), but can juggle multiple and complex storylines.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Scott Z. Burns has been tapped to work on Fox’s sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Chernin Entertainment is producing.

The new film, “continues the story set forth in last year’s critical and commercial hit movie featuring simians that are given human intelligence and subsequently break out of their facility. At the same time, a virus breaks out that causes the collapse of human society. The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.

Director Rupert Wyatt and mo-cap superstar Andy Serkis were previously announced to return.

‘Contagion 2′ In The Works. I’m Betting My Life Steven Soderbergh Not Returning

Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion – starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, and Gwyneth Paltrow – was a tense, frightening ride. For germaphobes like me who can’t help but thinking how susceptible we are to infection, it was an absolute nightmare.

The film followed, “the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.

It’s gotten out that a sequel to this is an OWA (Open Writing Assignment) at Warner Bros., which means that the studio is either hearing new takes from writers or is considering writers to tackle a take they already have in mind. The writer of the first one, Scott Z. Burns, is attached as a producer. But who won’t be back – I’m guessing – is Steven Soderbergh. It’s not like this movie is the fun “let’s just hang out” experience that the Ocean’s 11 sequels were. And it doesn’t generate the guaranteed amount of “one for me, one for you” cash and studio goodwill either.

Also, where could they go with this movie? A different virus? Maybe something more like Ebola? Half the world is already gone anyway, right? Pitch your take in the comments.
