[Special Report] Werewolves, Rich Kids, Murder And Revelations On The Set Of “Hemlock Grove”!!

Netflix will premiere Hemlock Grove,” from producer Eli Roth (who also directed the pilot), on April 19th. As is Netflix’s business model, all 13 episodes will be made available on the same day. In anticipation of that event, I can finally share my set report with you. I travelled up to the show’s location outside of Oshawa, Canada last December and what I saw truly surprised me.

“Hemlock Grove is a riveting one-hour murder mystery that revolves around the residents of a former Pennsylvania steel town. When 17-year-old Brooke Bluebell is brutally murdered, any of Hemlock’s peculiar inhabitants – or killer creatures – could be suspects. Through the investigation, the town’s seamier side is exposed, revealing nothing is what it seems. Beautiful, terrifying and graphic, Hemlock Grove is unlike anything else in its genre.” The series stars Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell and Freya Tingley.

[Special Report] Nothing Is Too Small On The Set Of ‘Stoker’

Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) English-language debut, Stoker, hits theaters March 1st from Fox Searchlight. Penned by Wentworth Miller, it’s an amazingly fun, intense and beautiful film that really sneaks up on you. It’s a film that I very much enjoyed watching, only to discover that I sort of loved it a few days later.

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.” Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Alden Ehrenreich, Phyllis Somerville and Dermot Mulroney all star.

I spent some time on the film’s set back in 2011 and figured an account of my visit would be a good introduction to the interviews I’m prepping to share with you next week. It was a quiet, reflective experience that revealed more about itself as it went along. Not unlike the film actually… READ MORE

[Special Report] Set Visit Preview For ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

By Elmar Berger

January 26th will see the world premiere screening of Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s highly anticipated monster extravaganza Frankenstein’s Army at the 42nd edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The film wrapped shooting more than ten months ago in Karlovy Vary, a small town near the Czech capital of Prague. While still shooting, BD was granted access to the impressive sets of the US / Dutch co-production, located in an old, now-closed mining colony. The film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War II setting of Raaphorst’s story. The old, run-down buildings and slowly-rotting industrial facilities of the complex were surrounded by huge barbed wire fences, all of which breathed an eerie, ultra-realistic atmosphere.

[Special Feature] Becoming A Zombie On The Set Of ‘Warm Bodies’… PART TWO!

In theaters February 1 from Summit Entertainment is Warm Bodies, a new kind of zombie film from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich and Analeigh Tipton, “The story centers on an existentially tormented zombie who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and his fellow zombies.

Back in October of 2011 I visited the set in Montreal and really dug what I saw. I’ve been a fan of Levine’s work for some time, but have to admit that I was iffy on this particular concept. But between reading the book and seeing what the cast and crew were up to, I’m very optimistic that this movie will be a lot of fun. Plus, I got to be a zombie (along with several other journalists)!

[Set Report] ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’!

On January 4, 2013 Lionsgate will gas-up their chainsaw and pull the cord on Texas Chainsaw 3D, the John Luessenhop-directed “sequel” to Tobe Hooper’s classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre that stars Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehler.

[Special Report] More From The Bulgaria Set Of ‘Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines’ And Part Two Of Our Interview With Director Declan O’Brien!

With Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, director and writer Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, Sharktopus) returns to helm of his third film in the franchise, with Doug Bradley (best known for his role of “Pinhead” in the Hellraiser films) in a pivotal role. Camilla Arfwedson, Roxanne McKee, Simon Ginty, Oliver Hoare, Amy Lennox, Duncan Wisbey, Kyle Redmond-Jones, Peter Brooke, Emilia Klayn, Rosie Holden and Andrew Bone round out the cast.

In the next chilling chapter of ‘Wrong Turn,’ a small West Virginia town is hosting the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween, where throngs of costumed partygoers gather for a wild night of music and mischief. But an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals kill all the fun when they trick and treat themselves to a group of visiting college students who are dying for a good time.

Back in May, I visited the set in Sofia, Bulgaria and came back with some thoughts on the production – not to mention a bunch of pics! I’ve already written in with Part One of my visit (and a contest winner’s set report can be found here.) Now I’m ready to share my final thoughts and the second installment of my video interview with Declan O’Brien – if you’re a fan of the franchise you won’t want to miss it.

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of Frankensteins Army!

Frankenstein’s Army is ready to strike!

BD stringer Elmar Berger writes in from set where principal photography for Richard Raaphorst’s Frankenstein’s Army starring Karel Roden (Hellboy), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element)and Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass) among others, wrapped this past Friday near Prague, Czech Republic. Bloody Disgusting was given the opportunity to spend a day on set, and boy, the film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War 2 Nazi-monster flick! An old run-down mining complex hosted various sets where a major part of the action took place. This mining complex, that nowadays serves as a museum to the public, is located between a still working prison and a shooting range of the Czech police from where constant gunfire was heard all day long. Add to this numerous actors dressed up as German and Russian soldiers armed to their teeth, and the illusion of being a time traveler that accidentally stumbled into a world war 2 battle is complete!

To top this experience BD was granted a peek into the films FX shop filled with a massive number of bizzarre monsters and creatures. The nice folks of Unreal FX even showed us some fx test footage they filmed earlier where, well, actually I can’t tell you that right now, but as a small hint, that particular scene involved a half Nazi, half mosquito monster!

The major part of the film’s creatures have been designed by director Raaphorst and since he’s a fan of old-school horror most of em have been brought to live be practical fx!

It’s pretty sure that Frankenstein’s Army is going to be a bloodsoaked ride or, as actor Robert Gwilym who plays a captain of the Russian army says “I’ve never been in a more violent movie!

A much more detailed set report is going to be published here pretty soon, so keep watching this space! READ MORE

‘Underworld: Awakening 3D’ Made $25 Million This Weekend, What Did You Think?

Underworld: Awakening 3D Made $25 Million This Weekend, What Did You Think?

I know a TON of you guys saw Underworld: Awakening 3D this weekend. It just grossed an estimated $25 million, outpacing Rise Of The Lycans by a significant margin.

While I didn’t love the movie (I’m not a huge Underworld fan), I did think it was the best in the series. From my review.

There’s almost a remarkable spark that accompanies this synergy of people cutting the bullsh*t and consciously embracing the humble simplicity of making a film designed only to be the very best kind of this type of movie. And that’s exactly what ‘Underworld: Awakening’ is. Sure I’m grading on a curve here, but it’s easily the best ‘Underworld’ movie. I was actually entertained throughout its appropriately brief 88 minute running time.

But what did you guys think? Write in with your review now!

Also, given this film’s box office performance and its ‘A-’ Cinemascore (which means that audiences liked it enough that we can expect it to continue to do well next weekend, unlike Devil Inside), I’d say it’s more than likely we’ll be seeing a 5TH Underworld film – even though one has yet to be officially announced.

Hit up the comments to let us know what you’d like to see in the 5th one, or if you just want the series to die already! READ MORE

[Video Review] Don Allens Take On Underworld: Awakening 3D

Underworld: Awakening 3D hit theaters this weekend and Don Allen checks in with his video review.

Don liked the film a hair more than I did (my review), but we both agree that Awakening makes a wise decision by shackling off the heavy handed romance and mythology heading straight into the action.

Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, this sequel stars Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, and Charles “I want the Ajanti Dagger!” Dance.

[Interview] Kate Beckinsale Talks Returning For ‘Underworld Awakening 3D’ & The Updated ‘Total Recall’

[Interview] Kate Beckinsale Talks Returning For Underworld Awakening 3D & The Updated Total Recall

Last week I had the chance to sit down with the stars of Underworld: Awakening 3D, Kate Beckinsale chiefly among them.

The new film adds a wrinkle to the mix by including actual humans in the ongoing battle between Vampires and Lycans. I talked to the newer members of the cast (Theo James, India Eisley and Michael Ealy) about joining the long running franchise. Meanwhile, Kate Beckinsale seemed quite happy to be back and was able to go into some detail regarding the tone of the upcoming ‘Total Recall’ remake.

I was also surprised to hear that co-directors Marlind & Stein literally alternated days on set, trading off which one of them got to call the shots depending on the day. Judging from these interviews, it would appear that process went shockingly smoothly.

I arrived in Detroit to find it a ghost town. A major American city, emptied of people, skeletal skyscrapers jutting blankly against the callous sky. I was there to visit the set of Hostel: Part III, the upcoming direct-to-DVD sequel which arrives in stores two days after Christmas.

This time around, the setting was relocated from the strange and barbaric Slovokian village of the first two films to the more familiar confines of Las Vegas, also barbaric but in its own, distinctly American, way (the production was planning on shooting in Sin City for a total of four days following their departure from Detroit)… READ MORE

[Set Visit] A Trip to Gepettos Lair in Cassadaga!

Last October, Tim Anderson and I trekked over to Sanford, FL to visit the set of Anthony DiBlasi’s Cassadaga, which premieres this coming Saturday, October 22 at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in CA. The film – which centers on a deaf girl who attempts to contact her late sister’s spirit during a seance but instead attracts the avenging ghost of a murdered woman – looks to have some fairly intense moments judging by what we saw during our trip.

The two days we were on set for, which also happened to be the final two days of principal photography, were filled with things we can’t really get too specific about – like what exactly is going on in Gepetto’s lair – but Tim did a really respectable job of giving you guys an idea of what you’re in for without completely ruining any third act plot points.

In case you missed this on set reports, I’d like to direct you to both Part 1 and Part 2, which carry interviews with the cast, producers and director.

Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

[Special Report] ‘The Caller’ Premiere in Puerto Rico: Lights! Camera! Hurricane!

Samuel Goldwyn Films’ suspense thriller The Caller is headed to select cities this Friday, August 26th. Directed by Matthew Parkhill from a script by Sergio Casci and starring Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight, New Moon), Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”, Quills), Ed Quinn (“True Blood”, “Eureka”) Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights) and Lorna Raver (Drag Me To Hell), the film centers around a recent divorcee who starts receiving some seriously needy and deranged phone calls on the old-timey landline in her new apartment.

Originally set to film in New York, the movie instead set up shop in Puerto Rico to take advantage of the territory’s tax incentives and the assistance of the local film commission. The subsequent plan was to shoot San Juan and pass it off as New York, but the filmmakers wisely decided to take full advantage of the exotic local flavor (and avoid the insurmountable task of finding more than two square feet of the Caribbean island that could pass for the Big Apple) and adapted the story to take place in the Puerto Rican capital instead.

Earlier this week I flew out to the island – which was literally enveloped by Hurricane Irene at the time – to attend the premiere, get a feel for the vibes of San Juan (the city is something of a character in the movie) and with speak with some of the film’s cast and crew about their soon to be notoriously difficult 23 day shoot. A shoot most of the people I spoke to felt was appropriately mirrored by the many, many difficulties that beset the premiere and, well… everything that went down over the past few days.

Check it out after the jump.

[Set Visit] Selene Comes Full Circle in ‘Underworld: Awakening 3D’!

Scheduled for release on January 20th, Underworld: Awakening is the upcoming fourth entry in the successful action/horror franchise that has so far grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. Shot in 3D and boasting the return of Kate Beckinsale to the role of Selene, the film is being directed by Swedish duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, representing their first outing at the helm of the series.

Back in May I visited the Vancouver set of the film to get a look at some of the action and interview cast and crew including Beckinsale, Marlind & Stein, new cast member Michael Ealy, and visual effects supervisor James McQuaide. In the process I was given a look into the relatively fraught production, which began principal photography without a finished script and was allegedly operating on a rather tight shooting schedule.

Also in the mix will be a discussion of this installment’s new features, including a twelve-foot-tall “uber-lycan”, a half-vampire/half-werewolf girl named Eve, the addition of a “Big Brother”-esque biotech company called Antigen, and perhaps a more ferocious Selene than you’ve ever witnessed before.

[Set Visit] This Is The Way The World Ends: Visiting the Filming Locations of Alien Invasion Film ‘The Darkest Hour’

Recently pushed from its original August release date to December 25, Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour is a 3D alien invasion movie that takes place against the backdrop one of the world’s most fascinating cities – Moscow, Russia. Directed by Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door) and starring Emile Hirsch, Max Minghella, Olivia Thirlby, and Rachael Taylor, the film follows the four central characters as they navigate the ravaged landscape of the city while attempting to evade the deadly, invisible aliens that are intent on hunting down and annihilating the world’s remaining humans.

Back in September I was flown out to the Russian capital to have a look at the set and interview cast and crew, in the process experiencing a captivating city I wasn’t sure I’d ever see in my lifetime. In the first part of our visit, we spoke with producers Tom Jacobson and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Night Watch, Day Watch, and Wanted) during an extravagant lunch at the top of one of Moscow’s most historic luxury hotels.

Also included in this section of the report are materials related to the phenomenon of “ball lightning”, a scientifically unexplained occurrence that features heavily in the alien invaders’ method of destruction.
