Doc Savage

Death Note (remake)

The story centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced “death note,” infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone’s name on the page while picturing the person in his mind.

Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note was originally published in Japan and later collected in 12 trade paperbacks that have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. The protagonist, Light, is a bright student who stumbles across a mystical notebook that has the power to kill any person whose name he writes in it. Light decides to launch a secret crusade to rid the streets of criminals. Soon, the student-turned-vigilante finds himself pursued by a famous FBI criminal profiler known only by the alias L.

‘Death Note’ Will Have To Wait As Shane Black Tackles ‘Doc Savage’!

Shane Black (writer of Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Long Kiss Goodnight and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is both awesome and on a commercial career high after the record breaking release of his 2nd directorial effort, Iron Man 3. While we know he’s got an adaptation of the Japanese classic Death Note on his dance card, that project will have to wait while he tackles Doc Savage. Per The Wrap, it looks like it will be his next project.

Doc Savageis a scientist, physician, adventurer, inventor, explorer and researcher. He has been trained since birth to be nearly superhuman in every way, with outstanding strength, a photographic memory, and vast knowledge and intelligence. He uses his skills and powers to punish evil wherever in the world he finds it.

The books gained notoriety in the 1930′s and 40′s. Neil Moritz will produce the film which will be written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.

Shane Black’s ‘Death Note’ Thankfully Not Dead

Shane Black (writer of Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Long Kiss Goodnight and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is both awesome and on a commercial career high pending the release of his 2nd directorial effort, Iron Man 3. But that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about helming a U.S. remake of the Japanese classic Death Note.

While he doesn’t give a ton of info, he tells Bleeding Cool, “Right now I’ve got this thing at Warner Bros. called Death Note that I like a lot. It’s a Japanese Manga that’s very tense and really cool.” Not much, but not dead either. A few years back Black was overseeing a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry – I’m not sure if that configuration is still in play.

‘Iron Man 3′ Trailer Already Better Than Anything In ‘Iron Man 2′

Nope. Not even remotely horror. But since this is the “Comics” page, we figured we’d be remiss in our duties to you if we didn’t report on some of the bigger comic-related news here and there – and the trailer for Iron Man 3 certainly qualifies. And I dig this trailer, it hints at a much more focussed (and darker) narrative than the utter mess that was . The fact that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is behind the wheel for this one gets me legitimately excited.

The film, “ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley. It opens May 13th, 2013. Head inside for the trailer! READ MORE

[BD Interview] ‘The Exorcist’ Director William Friedkin On Avoiding Formula, And The Studios, In His New Movie ‘Killer Joe’

In theaters today from LD Entertainment is Killer Joe, an insanely fun and disturbing movie directed by the man behind The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live And Die In LA and BugWilliam Friedkin. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon and is based on a play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts.

I recently spoke with Friedkin about crafting Joe, his sixteenth film, and his decision to make it outside of the studio system. We also talk about the film business in general and which of today’s filmmakers he finds inspiring. Oh, and he also weighs in on the futility of even comparing movies like Citizen Kane and Vertigo. It’s a long interview (we even talk Near Dark) but, when you get a chance to speak to someone with this kind of body of work, you want to go for the big picture.

When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Joe sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like from a modern-day, twisted fairy tale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella.

Killer Joe opens today in select cities. Head inside for the interview. Spoilers ahead. READ MORE

’80s Legend Shane Black Directing ‘Death Note’

The last time I jumped out of my chair was when Mark Romanek was announced to be directing the pilot for “Locke & Key”. This morning I nearly fell on the floor when it was announced that Shane Black – writer of ’80s classics Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2 and Monster Squad, along with The Last Boy Scout and Last Action Hero, director of the hilarious Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and star of Predator – will be helming a U.S. remake of the Japanese classic Death Note. Black will oversee a script that’s being written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. The story centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced “death note,” infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone’s name on the page while picturing the person in his mind.
