There’s no shortage of exciting horror games coming out over the next year or so, with one of the more highly anticipated titles being the freshly unveiled The Evil Within. We know a good deal about it, even though it’s still a ways off. We know it’s the first game by Tango Gameworks, helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. We know it’s coming to current and next-gen consoles sometime next year, courtesy of Bethesda, and that it sounds terrifying. More after the break.

About a year before its official unveiling, I claimed Shadows of the Damned could “reinvent the horror genre.” Now, obviously it didn’t do that. I still fell in love with it, even if it never really found an audience. I’ll refrain from saying the same about Mikami’s next project, The Evil Within, but what I will say is that it could very well be an amazing action/survival horror game. Mikami knows the genre, so I have faith that he’ll be able to produce something we’ll all be able to enjoy.
I hope you’ve been enjoying this steady trickle of information about the game, because it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. After the break I have a few more screenshots, which reveal Sebastian’s partner, Joseph Oda.

Finally, we know what Sebastian Castellanos, the lead in Mikami’s The Evil Within (‘Psycho Break’ in Japan), will look like. Okay, no, it doesn’t really matter, it’s just that I’m itching for more The Evil Within news and I’ve decided this counts.
I’m a little bummed Sebastian looks like every other lead character in a video game these days — i.e. your archetypal scruffy, middle-age white man — but I’ll be staring at his back for a majority of the game, so I’m all right with it this time. I’ve included some images from Famitsu’s feature on the game, along with the latest issue of the Tango comic for your viewing pleasure after the jump.

Shinji Mikami, one of the minds behind Resident Evil and Dino Crisis, unveiled his next game last week, a “pure” survival horror game titled The Evil Within. The live action teaser was definitely one of the more unsettling debuts I’ve seen for a horror game, though that’s unsurprising seeing as it’s the work of the extremely talented Kyle Cooper, who has worked on American Horror Story, The Walking Dead and Se7en. I decided to go through the teaser and capture nearly 40 screenshots from it, which you can enjoy in all their deeply unnerving glory after the break.

In their preview of Mikami’s The Evil Within, German news site PC Games unveiled an exclusive look at the asylum where at least the beginning of the game takes place. Between this and IGN’s reveal, it seems as if Bethesda only wants to drip-feed us information on this game via exclusive looks. That’s a pity.
Yeah, it’s a screenshot, but it’s something, and that’s better than nothing, right? I also have some clarifications and new info on the story details we reported on last week. More after the jump.

Earlier this morning, Bethesda officially announced The Evil Within with a creepy live-action trailer, sans any gameplay. I’m not a fan of trailers that show nothing of the game they’re advertising, because even if the trailer is amazing it doesn’t accurately represent the game.
Thankfully, we’ve also been given a batch of deeply unsettling screenshots that show off what the game will actually look like. After looking through them, The Evil Within looks strikingly similar to Resident Evil 4, which Mikami helmed back when he was with Capcom. The camera, combat, even a few of the enemies and locations. Check them out after the break!

A man makes barbed wire as a four-armed Witch from Left 4 Dead climbs out of a puddle of blood and a man with too much glass in his face stands there looking all creepy. That’s what you can expect from this debut trailer for The Evil Within — previously known as project Zwei.
“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,” said Mikami. “My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.” Watch its intensely creepy live-action debut trailer after the jump.

UPDATE: it’s been revealed!
The mystery game that Bethesda’s been teasing this week through a trio of bizarre videos — you can watch all of them after the jump — is actually Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s long silent survival horror game Zwei. Strangely enough, three of you have given me tips about the videos Bethesda’s been releasing, but I hadn’t gotten around to covering them because I am an epic failure (and I’m in the middle of a move).
IGN has the exclusive reveal, which will go live tomorrow, April 19, at 5:00 a.m. Pacific / 8:00 a.m Eastern. It’s about time!

It’s rarely a good thing when a game is announced only to go completely silent for a year or longer. Zwei is on the verge of becoming one of those games, as it’s been mostly quiet since its reveal last April. Since then we’ve heard very little from Mikami and his Tango Gameworks studio, leading me to question if it’s still coming. As the creator of the Resident Evil franchise, Shinji Mikami still has quite a few horror fans — myself included — who are looking forward to seeing what he does next. If a recent tweet from Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda, is anything go by, the game isn’t in trouble yet.
After a fan questioned him on the game’s status, Hines replied saying [It's] Going very well. Everyone here who has seen it and played it is very excited about what Shinji and Tango are up to.” Hopefully we’ll get to see something from it soon.

Shinji Mikami’s next project, a mysterious survival horror game code-named Zwei, has been silent for some time now. When I don’t hear anything from a game I tend to get a little paranoid, and outside of some concept art, (or doodles, rather) Mikami and friends haven’t peeped a word since its unveiling last April. Horror games are notorious for being the first to get the axe — just look at Del Toro’s InSane, which continues its search for a publisher — because they’re never guaranteed to sell well.
The lack of new footage, screenshots, or trailers is understandable since the game is still very early in development, but what worries me the most is how barren its website is. No marketing push is being made for this game, no one’s trying to build up a community or interest by maintaining a healthy Twitter, Facebook, or official blog. That’s scary.

It would seem that Skyrim has had quite an impact on Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. In an interview with PSM3, Mikami said “I started playing it when it was released, though right now I’m terribly busy and have had to stop,” something I’m sure a majority of us who have entered Bethesda’s beautifully crafted world can understand. I recently jumped into the game again to check out the new Dawnguard DLC, available now, and I was immediately reminded of the insane amount of detail that was applied to every single thing in that game. Apparently, Mikami agrees. Head past the break for more.

Last week it was revealed that Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is currently working on a brand new survival horror project, codenamed Zwei. Not much else is known about the game, other than it could potentially be the last game Mikami directs as he shifts his focus to running his Tango Gameworks studio. We also know Tango Gameworks is handling development in collaboration with parent company Bethesda Softworks, and some of the locations were teased in an eerie collage released last week. An expanded transcript of the interview from the issue of Famitsu that revealed Zwei Mikami talks a little more about his exciting new project. Head past the break for more details. READ MORE
A few days ago it was revealed that Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s next project is a mysterious survival horror game codenamed Zwei. Not much is known about the game other than it will be a “realization of pure survival horror” that “pushes the limits of fear and exhilaration,” or at least that’s what its press release says. Mikami also had something to say about his return to the genre he helped make popular–check that out, as well as a pretty creepy collage after the break. READ MORE
Shinji Mikami, the creative mastermind behind the Resident Evil series and collaborator with Suda51 on Shadows of the Damned and the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw is working on a brand spanking new survival horror title — that’s right, I said survival horror — codenamed Zwei. It was just unveiled in the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, which also revealed that Mikami’s Tango Gameworks studio will be handling development of the title. Mikami has said in the past that he would only direct one final project after Shadows of the Damned, so there’s a very good chance this could be it. Head past the break for more! READ MORE
