[BD Review] ‘Him Indoors’ Is Slick

Reviewed by Tim Anderson

When you go out there, bad things happen.

The perils of being an agoraphobic serial killer are surface-scratched in Director Paul Davis’ (Beware the Moon: Remembering An American Werewolf in London) short film Him Indoors. Essentially shot as a showcase piece for Davis’ storytelling skills—to show investors for a feature film he is developing—Davis assembled key cast and crew members from that production and fleshed out a twisted little 11-minute black comedy that clearly illustrates he can polish a solid narrative production from behind the lens.

The story follows a few short minutes in the afternoon of Gregory Brewster as he prepares for a dinner/date with his new next door neighbor—played by Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman). However when she arrives early, nearly catching him in the act of butchering a local delivery boy, Brewster has to call upon his very, very underdeveloped social skills to try and keep her from discovering his dark secret.

Since Brewster is a serial killer, the audience doesn’t need particularly need specific motivation for his actions. We know all we need to know about what kind of man he is in less than 3 minutes. However, as the story twists toward the climactic resolution, the character’s intentions might seem ambiguous unless you were paying closer attention to the opening monologue.

What seems like little more than ramblings at the outset is actually a clever way of imparting a fair amount of motivational information that will be visited later on in the story. This is a nifty trick since short films have so little time to communicate to the viewer the world of the characters that inhabit them. However, audiences that are easily distracted may miss some of the problems Brewster faces, making the film’s turn of events head-scratching or unclear as the production comes to its conclusion.

What minor foibles the plot may have in clarity are easily overshadowed by the spot-on performance from Reece Shearsmith (Shaun of the Dead) as Brewster. Shearsmith affects a nebbish performance and oozes unease with every passing phrase. It’s the very definition of the quiet guy next door—you know, the one that neighbors can’t believe was secretly hacking people up for years. As for Lizzy, Pollyanna McIntosh is, for fans of her feral and vicious performance in Lucky McKee’s The Woman, almost unrecognizably charming.

The production values are slick with excellent cinematography from Eben Bolter and an understated but effective score from Musician/DJ Osymyso. As for the script, and the directing, this makes major narrative film debut from Davis, who made his name as an award-winning horror journalist and as the Director of the An American Werewolf in London retrospective documentary that was included on the Universal Blu-ray release in 2011. And for a debut film, Davis handles the reigns with sure-footedness in the shot composition and pacing, while displaying a good ear for his character’s dialogue. It’s an auspicious start and I expect that we’ll see more from Davis as his feature film gains traction.

As for Him Indoors, it’s getting outdoors as the filmmakers gear up to take it on an international festival run which already includes prestigious stops at London’s famed Frightfest and the Telluride Horror Show. Let’s hope for them, unlike Gregory Brewster, good things happen when they go out there.

Meet The ‘Goat Man’ In Trailer For FX-Heavy Short

Lionell Hilliard has slept with a goat and conceived Goat Man, a new short that recently finished production and is looking to hit the festival circuit. Phil Nichols (aka The Fiendish Dr. Phil) of Facades F/X running the show star with the Facades F/X team for Goat Man also included Melissa Nichols and Melissa Gale Dabney.

There’s a widely-spread piece of Texas folklore about a legendary creature appearing to be half-man and half-goat. It’s seen about as often as Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster. Whether it’s good or evil is anyone’s guess…but it’s interesting, nonetheless.

The story of the origin of Goat Man takes place in the late 1800s. A small town political figure, living alone with only his married West-Indian servants, has decided to run for office, and is a sure fit for the position in question. That is, unless, his deep dark secret exposes him: he often takes up with his farm animals. As you might imagine, karma comes to collect when his conquest of choice, his she-goat, gives birth to the hideous creature we come to know as the Goat Man.READ MORE

Trailer For Zombie Wedding Short ‘Till Death Do Us Part’

Writer/director Julian Lara has crafted a cool short called Till Death Do Us Part that will be hitting the festival circuit later this year. I’ve seen it and it’s an interesting and funny take on the baggage that any adult can bring into a relationship. While I’m sometimes kind of sick of zombies in general, their use here is actually appropriate and the short pulls away from the traps you’d expect it to fall into during its final minutes.

We’ll let you know when it’s online to check out later this summer. In the meantime, here’s the trailer!

‘Red Valley’ Zombie Short Out Of New Zealand Made For Pennies!

Director Matt Barnes e-mailed us a story we couldn’t refuse, especially because their 5-minute short is pretty good.

A bunch of mates and I here in New Zealand decided to make a shoestring budget fake trailer. Except we didn’t really even have enough money for the shoestring. All we could afford was ingredients from the supermarket for fake blood and a load of clothing from a charity shop that sells it by the kilogram,” Barnes tells us. “And so, we made “Red Valley”, a pisstake of action/ horror trailers involving the crazed Colonel Bay sending in his all-female elite fighting team to a valley infested by post-apocalyptic cannibal mutants to rescue a General…or at least his eyeball.

The end result involved over 70 people, none of which were paid a cent…even the guy we set on fire.

Bailey Palmer, Kathryn Jackson, Rachel Crofts, Claire Kirby, Amelia Jenkinson, Jason Gascoigne and Anrik Drenth all deserve some praise for helping out their friends.

Holiday Short #2: Christmas Trees FIght Back In Treevenge!

One of the most infamous holiday short films of all time is Hobo With A Shotgun director Jason Eisener’s Treevenge, a film worthy of an annual showing much like Trick ‘R Treat on Halloween.

For those of you unaware, this 2008 short “details the experiences and horrifying reality of the lives of Christmas trees. Clearly, for trees, Christmas isn’t the exciting “peace on earth” that is experienced by most. After being hacked down, and shipped away from their homes, they quickly become strung up, screwed into an upright position for all to see, exposed in a humiliation of garish decorations. But this Christmas will be different, this Christmas the trees have had enough, this Christmas the trees will fight back. ‘Treevenge’ could be a short film about the end of days for Christmas trees, or perhaps, the end of humanity?

[OMFG] John Carpenter’s First Student Film is Unearthed at USC!

john carpenter voyeur102611 [OMFG] John Carpenters First Student Film is Unearthed at USC!

Just a day after the anniversary of Halloween‘s release, the first student film from famed horror director John Carpenter has been found in the archives at the University of Southern California and will be restored with the help of a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation, reports THR.

Carpenter wrote and directed “Captain Voyeur” for an introductory film class at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts in 1969. About eight minutes long, the black and white film has visual and thematic ties to the writer-director’s 1978 classic Halloween, according to Dino Everett, the archivist who discovered the preprint materials in a negative at USC’s Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive.

‘Captain Voyeur’ follows a man at a boring computer job who eyes a woman at work and follows her home. He dons a mask and attempts to kill her but is shot by his co-worker.
