The Horror Happenings Of 2012: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

A lot happened last year. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, and some of it was downright ugly. I think it’s safe to say that when it came to the horror games of 2012, there was something for everyone. There’s the bustling indie horror revolution, which brought us amazing games like Slender and DayZ, both of which will soon be getting their own standalone games. That was fueled by Steam Greenlight, and even Kickstarter, to a certain degree. Also, zombies. There were a lot of those, too. Too many, even, and I never thought I’d say that. The year also brought us long anticipated sequels to two of the major horror franchises, with Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill: Downpour. Oh, and Bloody Disgusting got a total site redesign. It looks gorgeous now (I know, I’m shameless).

I’ve looked through the highs and lows of 2012, brought them all together, and now I’d very much like to share them with all of you. Let’s look back at the year that was 2012, so we can better prepare ourselves for the craziness that will be 2013.

Toymunkey’s ‘Silent Hill’ Statues Are Shaping Up Nicely, Pyramid Head Coming Next Month

Toymunkey Studios first unveiled their Pyramid Head and Nurse statues at Comic-Con back in July. Since then, they’ve been hard at work on crafting some of the coolest and most detail heavy Silent Hill statues I’ve seen so far. The nurses won’t be ready until next Spring, but Pyramid Head will be available next month. I’m especially fond of the fleshy goo he has under that helmet, because it just looks so gross. The statues will run you $150, check them out after the break.

I Think I Just Found My Halloween Costume For Next Year

Can we all take a quick breather from all this holiday craziness so we can better focus on what’s really important right now? I’m talking about Halloween, and if you haven’t started preparing for next year then, well, I suppose you can get back to crafting that glorious two-story Gingerbread house I see you have there. I stumbled across this mask the other day and it immediately warmed my ice-cold heart. Created by Etsy user Epic Leather, these masks were inspired by the intensely creepy nurses from Konami’s Silent Hill franchise. Check them out after the break, and if you want one for yourself (and you have $200 lying around), I recommend grabbing one (or six) before my will crumbles and I buy them all for myself.

Hear Silent Hill Composer Akira Yamaoka’s Eternal Slumber Remix Of Dir En Grey’s “Rinkaku”

Tomorrow sees the release of “Rinkaku”, the new single from Japanese prog extreme metal band Dir En Grey. While we already posted about the new song and the really disturbing video, what we haven’t yet written about is the “Eternal Slumber Remix” done by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. Below you can hear his version of the song, which bears all the earmarks of what you could possibly want from Yamaoka. It’s eerie, atmospheric, haunting, and emotionally charged, taking the original and gives it a completely new sound. In short, it’s fantastic and gives me new appreciation for Yamaoka and his skills.

If you’re willing to pay a tad extra for shipping fees, you can pre-order the deluxe edition here. READ MORE

‘Silent Hill: Downpour’ Patch Available Now On Xbox 360, Coming To Games On Demand Tomorrow

It took a while to get here, but should you get the urge to dust off your Xbox 360 copy of Silent Hill: Downpour, the game should perform just a wee bit better the next time you put it in. It takes care of some of the more frustrating problems players might’ve come across, including frame rate drops and some problems that kept people from being able to finish the ‘Homeless’ side quest.

Konami detailed some of the issues the patch fixes for the Xbox 360 version, which you can find after the jump. If you have it on PS3, don’t fret — it’s in the works and should come in a few weeks.

[BD Review] Evan Dickson’s Thoughts On ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’!

While I personally am a fan of Christophe Gans’ 2006 Silent Hill, I absolutely despise Michael J. Bassett’s cinematic turd Solomon Kane. It has always come as a shock to me that he was hired to direct the high profile Silent Hill sequel that horror fans have been demanding for several years. While I never want a movie to be bad, it doesn’t shock in me in the least bit that Open Road’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D isn’t very good. At least Evan Dickson didn’t hate it…

Even if we assume that Silent Hill: Revelation is a complete success in terms of world creation (which I doubt, it’s surprisingly small in scope with much of it taking place in a warehouse/prison type environment), it’s still a mess of a movie. And not an enjoyable one.

You’ll find Dickson’s entire review here. After you guys check it out, write your own review to tell all of Bloody what YOU thought!

[BD Review] ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’ Is Confounding And Boring

Before we get into this you guys should know that I am not at all the intended audience for Silent Hill: Revelation. I love horror of course, and I appreciated the gore (of which there’s plenty) and makeup designs in the film. I understand that this world has significance to some of you and I can sort of see why, it’s a pretty original aesthetic. So while I can’t grade this film on how well it matches up to the games, the mythology or whatever it is you need out of a Silent Hill movie, I can grade it as a standalone film. And there it does not succeed.

Even if we assume that Silent Hill: Revelation is a complete success in terms of world creation (which I doubt, it’s surprisingly small in scope with much of it taking place in a warehouse/prison type environment), it’s still a mess of a movie. And not an enjoyable one. In fact, I wonder if the film would have been better off being even more insular – keeping outsiders completely at bay. At least then I could wonder if there was something I missed that kept me from being invested in the characters. Instead, this sequel politely opens up its doors to newcomers with an easy-to-follow plot and “characters” whose histories are thoroughly explained. And that’s where the film’s reach exceeds its grasp and it truly reveals itself – it’s not an actual movie.

From the painful expository breakfast table banter between Heather (Adelaide Clemens) and Harry (Sean Bean) to the cardboard cutout cliches of her classmates at school, everything that’s supposed to take place in the real world rings even more maddeningly false than the shenanigans at Silent Hill itself. The dialogue is so unbelievably stilted I couldn’t help but wonder if this was actually a first draft. Perhaps writer/director Michael J. Bassett felt that he needed to cut to the chase and get to the action (which he tries to shoehorn in as early as possible with a couple of substandard waking nightmare sequences that make the 2010 Nightmare On Elm Street look like a Bunuel film by comparison), but there’s really no excuse for these inhuman exchanges. These aren’t characters, they’re ciphers. And their inability to behave or speak like humans is perhaps the film’s most consistent element. We’re literally in a film where a father gives a daughter a white vest for her birthday because “he saw her looking at it in a mall.” I can only guess this vest is an identifiable part of her wardrobe in the game.

The film is in a dead heat to get to the actual town of “Silent Hill” but keeps tripping over itself to get there. An unnecessary private detective character and at least three scenes between Adelaide and her new friend Vincent (Kit Harrington) that begin and end on the exact same notes as their predecessors clutter the proceedings. It got to the point where I was dying for them to get to “Silent Hill.” A burning desire that I later regretted.

Once Heather and Vincent get to the town things get boring. Quick. I found myself longing for the film’s clumsy version of reality because there, at least, I had something to hang onto. Aside from some cool ash-ridden vistas that look pretty great in 3D, this film’s version of “Silent Hill” seems to be comprised entirely of the aforementioned dank warehouse/prison and a smallish fairground just outside. Here Revelation becomes so visually monochromatic it’s hard not to fall asleep. And this is where I’m guessing being a fan of the games might actually help you out, because if you can fill in the blanks in logic that this film has chosen to omit you might just have a satisfactory experience. No such luck for me though. Malcolm McDowell shows up for a bit as Leonard, hamming it up as Malcom McDowell is apt to do these days, and it’s a scene that manages to be both so confusing and so predictable that I was actually kind of impressed by its goofiness.

Things continue until the inevitable and anticlimactic end (which basically features a cenobite, odd in a movie whose other creatures are so distinctive). The denouement provides another impossibly inhuman exchange that, in any other movie, would be treated as a life-shattering event. Here, this potentially profound loss is met with a shrug. Which is pretty much how I felt on the way out of this film. I wasn’t angry with it for wasting my time, just perplexed that this collection of creative choices actually exists as a film. I really hope it makes some of you happy.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D OST Gets Release Date

The official soundtrack for Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has been given a digital release date of Tuesday, Oct. 30th as well as a physical release of Dec. 18th. The Lakeshore Records release will contain 14 tracks of music composed by Jeff Danna (Resident Evil: Apocalypse, The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus) and Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill, Shadows of the Damned). The full track list can be seen below. Warning: the titles may contain spoilers.

Danna comments, “[Director] Michael Basset was clear that he wanted the score to be more musical for this film than for the first Silent Hill movie. He said, ‘I definitely want there to be an emotional arc to these characters and this story, and I need you to inject more musicality and orchestral elements into the score to support that.’ In that way, the score is going to differ from the first film and from the games.

Continuing on, Danna explains, “The challenge for this film was unique. Michael Bassett’s storyline required that I combine Akira Yamaoka’s otherworldly textures and sound designs with music that was more emotionally driven and conventionally harmonic. The dark string passages that intertwine with the intense industrialized sound of SH2 are a unique chemistry. I’d look forward to the chance to work again with Akira Yamaoka on another Silent Hill film.” [Note: the last line does not confirm a third Silent Hill movie is in the works.]

[Album Review] Jeff Danna And Akira Yamaoka ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’ OST

In two days, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, the sequel to 2006’s Silent Hill, will hit theaters. Having been a huge fan of the game franchise since the first one was released, I was there when the first film came out. While I had a few minor issues with the film, I thought it was, and still is, the best video game-to-film adaptation ever released. Part of that was because the music of the film was Akira Yamaoka’s original cues with some simple additions here and there, courtesy of Resident Evil: Apocalypse composer Jeff Danna.

Now we have the sequel’s OST to look at. In a recent press release, Danna stated that director Michael Bassett (interview) told him, “…I need you to inject more musicality and orchestral elements into the score…” Danna once again collaborated with Yamaoka to create the aural landscape that we will be hearing in the film. But how does it fare on its own? Read on to find out. READ MORE

[13 Days Of Horror] Day 4: Why 2012 Has Been The Best (And Worst) Year For Horror

If you were to ask a fellow horror fan what they thought of 2012, there’s a good chance the reply you’d receive would be polarized. For many gamers, 2012 has been a year of extremes. I stand on the bright and sunny side, where the colors are vibrant and deer frolic in meadows of daisies, because to me, this year rocked.

Then, there are those who sit on the opposite side, huddled in the darkest corner of their rooms, muttering to themselves and drinking urine out of mason jars. These people do not like 2012, happiness burns their skin, and they cannot wait for next year to come and save them. Whichever side you’re on, join me after the break so we can take a look back at what’s arguably been the most divisive year ever for horror fans.
