[Horror In Your House] July 14th, 2012

This week has a bevy of films that are now available for to line the shelves of your home, but there’s not many that I’d actually want up there for all to see. In fact, outside of Silent House, which deservedly received mixed reviews, I’d say stay away and save your money for something you really like. For the record, I really truly enjoyed the first 2 acts of the aforementioned Elizabeth Olsen thriller, its wasn’t until the messy third act that I ended up with mixed feelings. Still though, you could do much worse.

100th STREET HAUNTING (THE GHOST OF RICHARD SPECK) (Blu-ray) – The Asylum Entertainment

In 2010, paranormal investigators tried to film Richard Speck’s ghost at the site of his heinous killing spree. The victims’ families have finally released the footage that documents their last days.

MICAH SAYS: The Asylum started the year hot with Nazis from the Center of the Earth and Two-Headed Shark Attack, but this one is back to form. By form I mean horrible and almost unwatchable. Those other two I mentioned are bad yes, but fun bad. Big difference.

BATHORY: COUNTESS OF BLOOD – Screen Media Films

With an unquenchable thirst for blood, Countess Elizabeth Bathory was one of the most prolific serial killers in history. Tearing flesh from bodies and bathing in warm blood, she delighted in an unholy quest for immortality while her country was being torn apart by a brutal and devastating civil war. Told on a grand scale in the 17th Century, Bathory is based on the true story of her rise and fall. READ MORE

Now That You’ve Seen ‘Silent House’, What Did You Think?

1silenthouseimages020312 Now That Youve Seen Silent House, What Did You Think?

Open Road’s Silent House, the remake of the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, opened on Friday and pulled in around $7 Million at the North American Box Office.

That’s not an amazing number, but then again the production cost of the film was under $1 Million so it’s possible it will still make its money back after P&A expenses (depending on what those are). I personally thought Elizabeth Olsen gave a remarkable performance. It’s entirely up to her to carry this “real-time” supernatural thriller and she more than pulls it off with an intense, layered performance. While the film isn’t perfect, I thought it had a fair share of impressive elements and was able to pull off some nice moments of terror.

Also, Nikki Finke thinks that La Casa Muda, was actually shot in one take (“the original was an impressive one-shot movie )“. It wasn’t. She also believes that the reason Silent House didn’t do better was that, “their remake stitches together several sequences and is only made to look as if it’s a one-shot pic. A backlash ensued since genre movie fans take their horror seriously.

While I respect the opinion of anyone who didn’t like the film, directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau were very upfront that the film is actually comprised of 8-9 takes. No one was really hiding anything. I suspect if you didn’t go see the film it was for entirely different reasons than the ones that Finke outlined. It’s kind of strange having a non-genre fan put words into your mouth isn’t it?

[Interview] Eric Sheffer Stevens Talks Long Takes, ‘Silent House’ And Working With Elizabeth Olsen

ESSShouse30912 [Interview] Eric Sheffer Stevens Talks Long Takes, Silent House And Working With Elizabeth Olsen

Open Road Films and Liddell Entertainment’s Silent House opens today in wide release. The pic, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, was co-directed by filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, who initially made a splash back in 2004 with Open Water. The screenplay was written by Laura Lau and based on the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, written by Oscar Estevez.

The film is orchestrated to appear as though it was shot in one take. There’s less than 12 cuts in the film, which means that every scene is a long, challenging prospect for the actors involved. Earlier this week I spoke with Eric Sheffer Stevens (pictured left; “I Hate My Teenage Daughter”, Julie And Julia), who plays Peter in the film, about the difficulties of performing under the conceit’s restrictions as well as what it was like working with the then unknown Elizabeth Olsen

The film “ is a uniquely unsettling horror thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Sarah, a young woman who finds herself sealed inside her family’s secluded lake house. With no contact to the outside world, and no way out, panic turns to terror as events become increasingly ominous in and around the house.

Write Your Own Review Of Silent House

Bloody stringer Ryan Daley hit up the 2011 Sundance Film Festival where he was one of the first people ever to see and review Open Road’s Silent House, the remake of the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, co-directed by Open Water filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. Here’s what he had to say about the film featuring 88 minutes of real fear captured in real time.

As is the case with most haunted house movies, the reasons behind the haunting are never as compelling as the haunting itself, but Kentis manages to mine the single-setting premise with some clever, highly memorable scares.

I recently sat down with the team to discuss the creation of the appearance of an uninterrupted take for an entire movie, along with crafting the story to fit that conceit. They definitely seemed energized by the restrictions of the film’s structure and elaborated on the challenges creating in-camera the kind of suspense beats that are normally fine-tuned in editing.

UK Trailer for Spanish ‘La Casa Muda’

Arriving in UK theaters on April 8 is the Spanish-language La Casa Muda, Gustavo Hernandez’s original first-person thriller that’s already been remade here in the States (The Silent House premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival).

Starring Gustavo Alonso, Florencia Colucci, María Salazar, Abel Tripaldi, the plot is based on a true story that happened in the late 40′s in a small village in Uruguay. Inside you’ll find the official UK trailer and quad. No U.S. release is planned yet.

The film focuses on Laura, who, second by second, intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed. Laura and her father Wilson settle down in a cottage they have to renew since its owner will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there and repair the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and gets louder and louder on the upper floor of the house. Wilson goes up to see what is going on while she remains downstairs on her own, waiting for her father to come down.

While the Chris Kentis-directed remake The Silent House (English-language translation) just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (review here), we just now got our hands on the first batch of lantern-filed imagery from Hernandez’s original. It’s a pretty solid flick, although the ending is a bit, errrrrr.
