Patrick Wilson, Amy Seimetz And Patton Oswalt To Star In ‘Scary House’ For Blumhouse!!

You have to respect Jason Blum’s ability to play things close to the vest. Aside from Sinister 2 – which they only had to announce because Eli Roth tweeted about it – he only really lets you in on stuff when he’s ready to start shooting (which seems to be the case here). Blumhouse Productions has announced the start of production on their new film Scary House.

It stars Patrick Wilson (Insidious, Watchmen), Amy Seimetz (The Sacrament), Jessica Tyler Brown (Paranormal Activity 3) and Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) in what’s described as “a haunting slow burn inside a typical suburban home that may or may not be infested with supernatural forces.” The film will be directed by Scott Stewart (Dark Skies) from a script by Chad Hayes (The Conjuring).

In a way, the title leads me to wonder if they’re using something so general as part of some meta The Cabin In The Woods approach, but apparently not. It seems like they’re swinging for the fences to make the “ultimate” suburban haunted house movie.

Per the official synopsis, “After suffering a loss, Jonathan (Wilson) and Lindsay (Seimetz) and their young daughter Amethyst (Brown) move into a modest home in a quiet suburban enclave where they intend to mend their family back to normal. While Jonathan struggles with unemployment and Lindsay yearns for the man he used to be, the tensions between them worsen as things slowly start going wrong with the house itself. Unwilling to move out of the house and unable to suffer one more night of ‘things happening’, they consult paranormal expert Aleksandar (Oswalt) hoping to find solace. Instead, they find that they are living in their greatest nightmare.”

10 Worst Horror Exposition Monologues!!!

Often times, a horror film has to take a moment or two to finally explain what’s been going on the whole movie. These exposition scenes are almost always eye-rollingly long and drawn out.

Not every film can have Richard Dreyfuss show up and offer a just perfect amount of information with a great performance. Sometimes you have to listen to Tony Todd pontificate instead.

Mr. Boogie Official Returning In ‘Sinister’ Sequel

Confirming earlier reports, Blumhouse Productions is moving forward on Sinister 2, the sequel to last year’s horror pic that grossed more than $87M worldwide off of a $3M budget, Deadline reports.

Creators Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who wrote the original, are both returning, although it’s unclear if Derrickson will direct once again.

Jason Blum will produce as will Derrickson. The duo are also working on a screen adaptation of Stephen King novella The Breathing Method.

The original Sinister starred Ethan Hawke as a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a supernatural nightmare.

[BD Review] Brad Says ‘Dark Skies’ Takes The “Slow Burn” To An Unfortunate Extreme

Dark Skies, the slow burn psychological horror film starring Keri Russell, Daniel Barrett and Josh Hamilton hits theaters today from Dimension Films. Brad (Mr. Disgusting) wasn’t a fan. At all. I’ve also seen the film and, while I dislike it a bit less than him, I have to agree with the points he makes in his review. Most of the issues stem from the script by Scott Charles Stewart (who also directed).

The film is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most boring features I’ve seen in years. Taking slow burn to an entirely new level, it traffics in some of the most cliche alien motifs out there, but also feels the need to eventually over-explain everything in one purging moment. After over an hour of obvious hints and weird occurrences (such as the birds scene from the trailer – as well as missing time, rashes behind ears, and unwatchable camera footage), the filmmakers decide to assault the viewer with an overly long explanation of occurrences.

[DVD Review] ‘Sinister’ Is Flawed

Upon first inspection, Sinister appears to be a scary, complex film. After mulling about it in one’s mind, it can easily be torn apart quite quickly. The plot revolves around Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), a true crime writer, who continuously hauls his family across the United States in order to write his next best seller. This time he has moved his own family into a house where the murder of another happened. The family were hanged from the tree in the backyard, with a daughter never being found. The twist in this film comes when Oswalt finds a box of 8mm films in the attic – each detailing a sickening murder of a family. READ MORE

[Interview] Scott Derrickson And C. Robert Cargill On Creating ‘Sinister’, The Lost Angela Bettis Scenes On The Blu-ray, Plus Updates On ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’ And ‘Sinister 2′

Sinister arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today, February 19th. Both versions include audio commentaries, deleted scenes and multiple featurettes and it’s a rather more loaded disc than we’re accustomed to getting with many horror releases these days.

Yesterday I had the chance to talk with writer/director Scott Derrickson and his co-writer C. Robert Cargill (aka “Massawyrm” on Ain’t It Cool). While I’ve talked about Sinister with Derrickson on prior occasions, this was my first opportunity to speak with both of them about their ongoing collaboritive process. We also discussed the lost Angela Bettis scenes that have made their way back onto the Blu, the upcoming video game adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well as an obligatory follow-up on my part regarding Sinister 2.

In the film, “Ten years ago, true crime writer Ellison Oswald (Hawke) made his reputation with a best-selling account of a notorious murder. Now, desperate to replicate the success of his first book, he moves his family into a home where the previous occupants were brutally executed and a child disappeared, hoping to find inspiration in the crime scene. In the home, Ellison discovers a cache of terrifying home movies, unwittingly opening the door into a nightmarish mystery.

Mr. Boogie Could Return In Possible ‘Sinister’ Sequel

Want to see Mr. Boogie haunting another family?

SciFiNow has the scoop on a potential Sinister sequel, the follow-up to last year’s uber successful horror film directed by The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘s Scott Derrickson.

I certainly want to write the script and be involved with it as the producer – I would possibly direct the next one, we’ll see,” Derrickson told the site.

But I don’t see myself just handing the franchise over to just anybody and letting it go,” adds the director referencing what Lionsgate did with Saw. “If it goes on – then maybe – but I want to see it start its process on the right foot at least, and always have some say and have some involvement in it.

Sinister‘s co-writer, novelist C Robert Cargill added, “Before we finished the movie Scott and I had a discussion about the things we don’t want to do, and spitballed just a couple of things that we would like to do given the opportunity, but it’s all still theoretical stages – ‘Oh, hey, wouldn’t that be cool’ – everyone’s still waiting to see on the lifecycle of the movie how everything pans out before everybody jumps up and says, ‘Yes! We must have a second one!’

Sinister grossed over $62 million off a $3 million budget.

[BEST & WORST '12] Corey Mitchell’s Top 15 Festival Horror Films of 2012

I’m old and have two young daughters. Before kids, I used to go to the movies at least two times a week. Now, I almost never head out to the theater to catch a first-run movie. I do, however, get to attend a couple of film festivals each year.

As a result, I get to see a lot of movies that many of you won’t see for a long time. Just think of these reviews as a primer for shit you should most definitely check out whenever you can.

Some of these films have since had theatrical runs; a few with limited runs, and some are available on DVD or Netflix. Most of these though have not seen the darkness of a theater outside of their film festival runs.

Do yourself a favor and track them down. You’ll be glad you did. READ MORE

A “Sinister” Spoof Of Latest ‘A Haunted House’ Poster

In theaters January 11 from Open Road Films is Michael Tiddes’ A Haunted House, co-written by and starring Marlon Wayans. Also starring Cedric The Entertainer, David Koechner, Nick Swardson and Essence Atkins, below we’ve added yet another spoof poster, this time gimmicking Summit’s Sinister.

In the Wayans family tradition of successful movies like Scary Movie 1 & 2, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and, most recently, Dance Flick, Marlon Wayans co-wrote the script for A Haunted House, along with Rick Alvarez, who has produced several Wayans family movies.

In an outrageous send up of the Paranormal Activity movies, The Devil Inside and other “found footage” movies, A Haunted House features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted, it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghostbusters to rid her of this unwelcome intruder, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his relationship… or, more importantly, his sex life.READ MORE

‘Sinister’ Pulled From More Than 40 French Theaters Because…

It was reported via French press late last week that more than 40 French theaters had pulled the theatrical release of Scott Derrickson’s Sinister. Why? Distributor Wild Bunch blames Paranormal Activity 4 (also produced by Blumhouse) and more than a handful of despicable, disrespectful, ignorant and disgusting theatergoers.

Here’s a translation (and slight edit) of what Wild Bunch had to say via Facebook: “Some rooms last weekend have experienced some problems with the spectators Panamornal Activity 4 – confectionery counters looted, cashiers insulted, urinating on the seats, etc. – thus, more than 40 confirmed theaters have simply canceled their programming of Sinister this week.

They continue: “The exploitation of films called ‘gender’ is not easy in France, so we ask our future spectators please be respectful of the rules of courtesy and for those interested, do not hesitate to ask their cinema film schedule next week.

Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance, begins when found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

[Interview] Director Scott Derrickson On Creating The Unsettling Moments Of ‘Sinister’

Sinister hits theaters on October 12th. Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance all star in this super creepy film from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson.

In the film, Ethan Hawk plays Ellison, a true crime novelist whose glory days are behind him (one hit and two flops in ten years). His past successes enable and embolden his pursuit of future triumphs, while his current failures have eroded his finances and the strength of his family unit. Not to mention the fact that he’s just moved them into a very recent crime scene.

While Brad’s review was mixed, I found a lot to like in the film. To that end, I hopped on the phone with Derrickson a few weeks back to discuss his approach to creating what will soon be known as the film’s signature moments. We also discussed the motivations that keep Hawke’s character in the house (and we touch upon Sinister‘s sly reference to a certain 1988 Dennis Quaid movie – though you’ll have to figure out what that moment is for yourself).

[Interview] Producer Jason Blum Talks ‘Insidious 2′, ‘Paranormal Activity 5′, ‘Dark Skies’ And ‘The Purge’ At The Opening Of ‘Blumhouse Of Horrors’!

Last night I attended a preview of Jason Blum’s Los Angeles haunted attraction, “The Blumhouse Of Horrors”. While what I saw wasn’t 100% finished, it was certainly impressive. It’s not so much a maze as it is a building full of haunts, characters, magic and smoke. I took a guided tour, which is not a VIP thing, it’s how the attraction is meant to be experienced since your guides are pretty creepy as well. There’s a lot of cool stuff to see (and feel – I know BD alum Brian Collins even got zapped). There’s also a neat feature that had the claustrophobic in me absolutely reeling. If you live in LA, and are a fan of haunted houses, I certainly recommend it.

The Blumhouse of Horrors opens on October 4th and will be open to the public Thursday through Saturday throughout October. And it’s open the entire week of Halloween. Info and tickets are available on the official site. You can also follow the Blumhouse Facebook and Twitter for more info.

After experiencing the attraction I sat down with Jason Blum to talk about his inspiration for the experience and how he tailored it to fit the building’s unique space. We also talked about some if his upcoming films. Insidious 2 seems to be just a click away and the existence of Paranormal Activity 5 seems to be a given at this point. We also talk about Dark Skies and the Ethan Hawke-starring Vigilandia, which is now titled The Purge. Head inside for the interview, it’s short but sweet! READ MORE
