[Slamdance '13 Review] Cultish Thriller ‘Jug Face’ A Biazzare And Creepy Slow-Burn

Under the radar and premiering at the Slamdance Film Festival is a new Lucky McKee production. The director fo May produces Chad Crawford Kinkle’s indie thriller about a backwoods community who worship “The Pit.” Starring The Woman‘s Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, the latest Moderncine production delivers yet again.

If anything, Jug Face fits into the world of May,” I state in my review. “Although someone else directs the pic, it feels much like a Lucky McKee film. Knowing this, fans should expect an insanely bizarre and creepy slow-burn with a lot of good ideas, and precise execution. It also harbors the lesson: don’t fuck with the pit…

[BD Review] Cultish Thriller ‘Jug Face’ A Creepy Slow-Burn

Moderncine is a company that should receive more praise than it gets. They’ve become the model for consistency, delivering a flurry of well made independent films over the past few years (including The Woman, Offspring and Ghoul). The 2013 Slamdance Film Festival played host to the world premiere of Jug Face, a cultish thriller from producer Lucky McKee and director Chad Crawford Kinkle.

The pic, which re-teams The Woman stars Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, follows a large backwoods community who live their lives by worshipping a pit. The pit is their God, and apparently one that is very real. There’s a treaty in place, where a semi-shaman, played by Bridgers, is given a vision to sculpt the “next” sacrifice on a jug. Said face is to be executed to the pit. Failure to comply makes the put angry, and hell ensues. You get the idea.

Jug Face feels really small, in a good way, and captures the essence of this tiny group of worshippers. It’s aesthetically similar to other Moderncine movies; it’s a look that gives the film quality and technical shows expertise. Although, it’s carried by strong performances, and a few explicate shots of gore.

If anything, Jug Face fits into the world of May. Although someone else directs the pic, it feels much like a Lucky McKee film. Knowing this, fans should expect an insanely bizarre and creepy slow-burn with a lot of good ideas, and precise execution. It also harbors the lesson: don’t fuck with the pit…

[Slamdance '13] Official Festival Trailer For ‘Jug Face’!

The pit wants what it wants.

That’s the eerie tagline from the festival trailer for Chad Crawford Kinkle’s horror drama Jug Face, starring The Woman‘s Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, along with Sean Young, Larry Fessenden and Daniel Manche. The film will world premiere as part of the Slamdance special screenings program this coming week.

[Slamdance '13] ‘Ghost Team One’ Trailer Skewers Ghost Hunting Adventurers

Ben Peyser and Scott Rutherford’s Ghost Team One will be playing at the Slamdance festival later this month. Starring Carlos Santos, Fernanda Romero, J.R. Villarreal, Meghan Folcone, Tony Cavalero, James Babson, Scott MacArthur, and Craig Stott, it’s a subversive, comedic take on the found footage genre wherein two roommates deathly afraid of ghosts both fall in love with a girl who believes their home is haunted.

Now Indiewire has their hands on the trailer, and it looks like a lot of low budget fun. I think I’d actually see this movie!

In the film, “In order to impress a girl, two roommates set out to make a documentary about a murder that took place in their house decades ago. The girl thinks that the victim’s ghost still resides there, and the two guys think that making a movie with her will get them laid. But after setting cameras up around the house, the legitimately supernatural occurrences that follow make it apparent that the ghost is not only real, but that she’s a vengeful Vietnamese madame from the 1930’s that’s become smitten with our guys.

[Slamdance '12] Review: ‘Comforting Skin’ A Boring Melodrama

[Slamdance 12] Review: Comforting Skin A Boring Melodrama

In Derek Franson’s indie Comforting Skin, a lonely young woman’s desperate need for emotional and sexual companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin. It reminded me of the classic “Tales From the Crypt” episode in which a tattoo came to life. Too bad it’s nothing like it. Having world premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Ryan Daley writes this:

After its supremely eerie first act, ‘Comforting Skin’ disintegrates into a boring indie melodrama, complete with overwrought arguments and tedious grievances.”

GhoulLand12412 [Slamdance 12] Review: Ghoul An Above Par Adaptation With An Unusually Rich Plot!

Chiller TV’s made-for-TV production, Ghoul, premiered last week at the Slamdance Film Festival. Yesterday we announced that it had an air date for Friday, April 13th. And today we have a review!

John Marrone writes in from Slamdance, “As so often explored by Moderncine creations such as ‘The Girl Net Door’, ‘Offspring’, or ‘The Woman’ – what worse beast is there, than man? Genre crawlers looking to see a corpse eating beast or rape scenes in the tunnels beneath the graveyard should take note – this is not a hard-R film… With children engaging problems that would traumatize adults, and an acoustically driven soundtrack by Sean Spillane, Ghoul feels very much like a less offensive version of something between ‘The Woman’ and ‘The Girl Next Door’.

Brian Keene’s Ghoul is based on a horror novel of the same name, which follows a group of young friends who risk their lives to stop a rash of disappearances in their town. Directed by Greg Wilson and penned by William M. Miller, the adaptation stars Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”). Wilson also directed Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door. Bloody Disgusting Selects Acquires ‘Atrocious’!

As I’ve stated numerous times, I think the “found footage” subgenre is awesome. I also believe it’s here to stay. Sure, everyone and their moms are attempting to make their own cinema verite horror film, but how is that any different than when Halloween inspired a rash of slasher film that are still alive and well 30+ years later?

Sifting through hundreds of new films inspired by Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project and REC, we here at Bloody Disgusting believe we’ve unearthed a new batch of creepy footage that you guys are absolutely going to love.

Joining Bloody Disgusting Selects is Fernando Barreda Luna’s Spanish-language Atrocious, which landed on our radar after Ryan Daley reviewed it this past January. It had its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah. The pic joins the previously announced line-up of Rammbock, YelowBrickRoad and Cold Fish (more details).

It will be released later this year via AMC Theaters (every single Wednesday and Friday night, expanding if it does well), before arriving on VOD, DVD, online and television. And as stated before, we’ll be highlighting your own personal reviews, good or bad. You guys will make or break the success of the films…

Spanish-language ‘Atrocious’ Gets Found Footage Redo

Could this be the second coming of REC?

One of the cooler movies of the year is the “found footage” Spanish-language Atrocious, which Bloody Disgusting’s Ryan Daley was a pretty big fan of.

The boys over at Twitch are reporting that producers Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious) have picked up rights for an American remake. Blum and Kavanaugh-Jones have become frequent collaborators, having recently teamed up on Insidious, which was picked up Sony at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Their next production is Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem, which begins production this fall.

Helmed by first-time writer/director Fernando Barreda Luna: “In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a terrifying local urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, before culminating in unspeakable atrocities.

Watch for some big distribution news in the coming weeks.

Slamdance ’11 REVIEW: Latest First-Person Horror Ain’t So ‘Atrocious’!

Getting quite a bit of buzz out of the Slamdance Film Festival (taking place kitty-corner to the Sundance fest) is the Spanish-language first-person psychological chiller Atrocious, which focuses on the case of a brother and sister who investigate a local urban myth while on holiday, resulting in strange occurrences at the family’s summer house.

Ryan Daley was lucky enough to be one of the first ever to see the film, which he calls a “success”: “While it doesn’t know any new tricks, Atrocious is a dog that perform the old tricks just fine. As the camera whips through the trees in well-edited POV shots, there’s something about the long sequences of night-visioned hedge maze stumbling that are completely hypnotic.

Gearing up for the festival premiere, inside we scored a trio of exclusive evidence photos. Dig through and see if you can find any clues. In April 4th of 2010, Quintanilla family was found murdered in their country side house. Police reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded evidence. Atrocious shows the real images of such evidence. Both of them used to record all day whatever they did. On the fifth day of their arrival they were found dead under strange circumstances.
