Prepare To Get Blown Away By This Acoustic Cover Of Slayer’s “Seasons In The Abyss”

I’m a huge fan of cover songs that take an original and give it a fresh new spin. Just look at my 5 Great Cover Songs list and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

That’s why I was completely blown away by Sam Westphalen‘s acoustic cover of the classic Slayer track “Seasons In The Abyss”. Westphalen uses a very percussive approach to the acoustic guitar, creating some amazing moments. I can go on and on about it but I simply recommend you head on down and check it out. READ MORE

R.I.P. Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Passes Away At Age 49

Terrible news has hit the metal world as it has been announced that Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who was an original member, has passed away at age 49 due to liver failure. Hanneman had not been a touring member of Slayer since 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, also known as the flesh-eating disease. Continuing health problems would not allow him to rejoin his bandmates.

The band posted the following message on their Facebook: “Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)

Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to the family, friends, and fans of Jeff Hanneman. READ MORE

[Editorial] Why There Most Likely Will Never Be Another “Metallica” Level Band

Let me make things clear right now: This isn’t an article about Metallica. Rather, I use their popularity and influence as the foundation for the very simple statement that there will most likely never be a band that reaches their level ever again. I just can’t see it happening in today’s day and age, not with how band’s showcase their presence and not with how the audience of today functions.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love nothing more than to see a metal band emerge that writes killer material, mobilizes a rabid following, and, over time, becomes an entity that grows to a larger-than-life status. Such bands are few and far between and the problem is that they are becoming rarer and rarer with each passing day. The days of huge, lasting influential bands may very well be at an end. READ MORE

Slayer Drummer Dave Lombardo To Be Forcibly Replaced For Australian Tour

Drummer Dave Lombardo has posted a statement via his official Facebook page that explains why he will not be the drummer during the upcoming Slayer tour in Australia. Apparently Lombardo did some digging into the band’s finances and found that the amount the band received for touring was approximately 10%, far below what is expected. When he brought this up, management and lawyers tried to effectively silence him and lock him into a binding contract that would have given him no information or guarantees upon request.

Interestingly, based upon Lombardo’s statement, guitarist Kerry King seems to have no interest in this situation and even told Lombardo that, “…he would find another drummer.“. The full statement can be read below. READ MORE

[OMFG] New Couple Uses “Raining Blood” As Wedding Intro

Newly wed couple Dan Phillipps and wife Kinga decided to start their wedding off with a bit of a bang by entering the hall to Slayer‘s “Raining Blood”. In a story to Blabbermouth.net, Phillipps stated, “Slayer has always been a very special band to me. Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax were the reasons I got into heavy metal. I remember first hearing ‘Hell Awaits’ in 1987 and being blown away. I never heard anything like it.

“When I first met Kinga, I didn’t know she was into extreme music. She’s from Poland so I randomly asked her if she heard of Behemoth or Vader. To my surprise, she heard of them and had seen them live in concert a few times. So we instantly clicked. Our second date was a Rotting Christ concert.

“When I was planning our wedding intro, I knew that I didn’t want your typical wedding music for our intro. I spoke to Kinga about it and she agreed. A standard wedding intro just didn’t seem right for my wife and I. Something about the ‘Raining Blood’ intro seemed like the perfect walk-out music for us. I got goosebumps just thinking about it. Most of my friends and family loved our intro. They said it was perfect for my wife and I.

Anthrax Pick Replacement Guitarist For Upcoming Tours

Thrash metal legends Anthrax recently announced the shocking news that lead guitarist Rob Caggiano had quit the band, just a month before a heavy touring schedule was set to begin. However, the band also stated that they would not be hosting auditions for a new lead guitarist. The reason for that is now obvious as it has been announced that Shadows Fall guitarist Jon Donais will be filling in as lead guitarist while the band tours over the next few months.

Scott Ian states, “Jon is a bro and he’s also a total fucking ripper. I’ve worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I’m excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with Anthrax. 13′s gonna be a good year.

Donais adds, “I grew up on Anthrax, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of The Big Four, I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he’s being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band – Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed – who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this.

You can see all tour dates that Donais will be on below. READ MORE

Broken Hope Issue Update On First New Album In 13 Years

Chicago death metal band Broken Hope has issued an update regarding their new album, which is their first release since 1999′s Grotesque Blessing. The band signed with Hard Impact Management earlier this year and states they will be committed to writing and touring, including being currently booked for the 2013 editions of Extremefest (Germany) and Maryland Death Fest.

The band issued the following official statement:
We want to give you all a quick Broken Hope update before the New Year, and we have some exciting news! First, congratulations to Broken Hope’s own Shaun Glass on the birth of his first child: Maddux Burton Glass, born Dec 17, 2012. Maddux enters the world just before Christmas and just as Broken Hope is writing the new album!

Speaking of the new album, we can officially say that we’ve written 11 songs so far– and are still trucking along with more material. The new material is so ferocious, we jokingly sum up the vibe of the new music as ‘Reign In Bowels’ because it’s like someone took Slayer’s ‘Reign In Blood’ and mated that intensity and horror with the extremity and sickness of Broken Hope’s ‘Bowels of Repugnance’ album…It’s insanely heavy and unrelenting! That said, here’s a couple song titles we can release to you all– chew on these: ‘The Flesh Mechanic’ and ‘Give Me the Bottom Half.’ We can’t wait for you to hear ‘em all! Happy Holidays everyone!READ MORE

Slayer Releases The Most Evil, Vile…Christmas Sweater?

When I think of Slayer, I think of people carving the band’s logo into their arm or back. I think of dangerous mosh pits. I think of red skies, oceans of fire, and the air reeking of sulfur. Know what doesn’t come to mind when I think of Slayer? Ugly Christmas sweaters. Last thing on my mind when it comes to the band.

And yet it exists. Wanna know something? It’s ugly. Like, really freakin’ ugly. It looks like something Freddy Krueger’s mom would buy him and he’d have to wear it to make her happy even though inside he’s seething, hating every moment, just waiting for Christmas dinner to end so that he can go back to invading teenager dreams and slaughtering them mercilessly, taking out his anger and frustration on them.

If you want to see it, look below. As for getting one? They’re $80 a pop here. Oh, and shipping is an additional $18. So you’re just shy of $100 for an ugly Slayer Christmas sweater. Ho ho muthaflippin’ ho. READ MORE

[Interview] Juliette And Sean Beaven Talk 8MM

Interview and article by Chris Lockett

Over the past decade or so, the Internet has proven itself to be the ultimate gateway to discovering new music, and in helping artists from all over the world at getting their voices heard. However, every coin has a flipside, which is to say that over the past few years, the Internet has become overcrowded with some absolutely horrendous “artists” who end up with every bit as good of a chance at getting their voices heard, as the artists that have actual, discernable, talent do. It’s unfortunate. And the fact that the world seems to enjoy these dime a dozen Rock, or Pop acts, only serves to tilt the playing field away from the REAL artists/innovators, and toward these groups that have absolutely nothing new to bring to the table.

And so this brings me to the subject at hand. 8MM is an excellent band that has gone under the radar since their formation in 2004. The group, founded by Producer/Mixer extraordinaire Sean Beavan, (who has worked with Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, God Lives Underwater, Guns N’ Roses, and Slayer, as well as many others), and his wife, the stunning Juliette Beavan, have released three EPs, as well as a full-length album in 2006. And now, after a successful Kickstarter campaign, Sean and Juliette have released their latest album Between the Devil and Two Black Hearts. The album sees them completely reinventing themselves, by going from an Industrial Trip-Hop sound, to a Southern Industrial sound, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking, ensuring that the album will undoubtedly be the band’s breakthrough.

Bloody-Disgusting was able to catch up with BOTH Sean and Juliette, (we thought that we were only going to be chatting with Juliette, but were pleasantly surprised to find Sean on the other line as well), to talk about their new album and sound, as well as their views on Top 40 music, and of course, Horror flicks. Hit the jump to check out this exclusive interview. READ MORE
