[Interview] Director Jaume Balagueró On Crafting The Suspense Of ‘Sleep Tight’ And The “Harder Horror” Of ‘[REC] 4′!!

Director Jaume Balagueró ([Rec] and [Rec] 2) switches gears a bit with his creepy new film Sleep Tight. The film was written by Alberto Marini (Films to Keep You Awake: To Let) and inhabits a much different tonal space than the [REC] films.

To that end I recently shot Balagueró a few questions via email. We touched on the change of pace this film represents, working with 700 live cockroaches and what to expect from his next directorial effort, [REC] 4: Apocalypse

IN the film “Toiling silently among the residents of an everyday Barcelona apartment building, doorman César (Luis Tosar, Even the Rain, Miami Vice) harbors a dark secret: his sole desire in life is to make others unhappy. When he sets his sights on Clara (Marta Etura, Cell 211, Dark Blue Almost Black), one of his building’s cheeriest residents, his sick need blossoms into a full-fledged obsession.Sleep Tight was nominated for more than 20 awards in Spain and won six Gaudi Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor for Luis Tosar and Best Screenplay.

[REC] Director’s Stalky ‘Sleep Tight’ Dated For Home Video

The residents of a sleek apartment building would never suspect that the quiet man who opens the door for them every day has a dark and deadly secret. And now the secret’s out as Sleep Tight, featuring “one of the most charismatic villains in the recent cinema” (Fotogramas), comes to high-definition Blu-ray and DVD from Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group on January 8, 2013.

Written by Alberto Marini (Films to Keep You Awake: To Let), Sleep Tight is the latest film from Jaume Balagueró, director of the Calista Flockhart thriller Fragile and the modern shock classics [Rec] and [Rec] 2.

Toiling silently among the residents of an everyday Barcelona apartment building, doorman César (Luis Tosar, Even the Rain, Miami Vice) harbors a dark secret: his sole desire in life is to make others unhappy. When he sets his sights on Clara (Marta Etura, Cell 211, Dark Blue Almost Black), one of his building’s cheeriest residents, his sick need blossoms into a full-fledged obsession.

Embarking on a series of private and physical violations against Clara, César becomes determined to ruin her life by any means necessary. Becoming the boogeyman hiding under the bed and bringing her nightmares to life, his fascination with torment soon crosses the line into lunacy – and his thirst for others’ sadness soon becomes manically unquenchable.

Sleep Tight was nominated for more than 20 awards in Spain and won six Gaudi Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor for Luis Tosar (praised as “appropriately clammy” by The New York Times’ Manohla Dargis) and Best Screenplay. READ MORE

[AFM '12] The Poster For ‘Summer Camp’, From The Makers Of ‘[REC]‘!!!

Yesterday we reported that the production house responsible for the [REC] franchise is developing the new horror project Summer Camp to shoot in 2013. They debuted the poster today at the American Film Market in Santa Monica.

While there are no details just yet, Sleep Tight screenwriter Alberto Marini will be making his directorial debut on the film and co-wrote the screenplay.

The plot is under wraps but Marini commented to Variety, “There’s a game common to the majority of kids around the world, both in and out of summer camps: “Tag, you are it”…. The fun of the game is that the roles are constantly changing: The pursuer becomes the pursued, the cat becomes the mouse.” He added, “We wanted to capture this idea in a horror-filled, adrenaline-pumped movie…. A film in which you’re never sure who your friends or who your enemies are, a game you’d never wish to be part of and where, sometimes, in order to escape the only option is to attack.” Jaume Balaguero (Sleep Tight, [REC], [REC]2) executive produces.

[Review] FF ’11: ‘Sleep Tight’ and Its Creepy Villain

Screening at the ongoing Fantastic Film Festival in Austin, Texas, David Harley write in with his thoughts on Filmax’s Sleep Tight, a new thriller from Spaniard Jaume Balagueró, best known for co-directing REC and REC 2, along with Darkness, Fragile and Nameless.

In the film: The residents of the building where Cesar works as a doorman are not aware of the overtime he has been putting in. Apparently, he is at their service both day and night.

Marini’s script might be built upon a simple, familiar premise but the characterization is excellent, giving Tosar the ammunition needed to create one hell of a creepy villain.

[News Bites] ‘Sleep Tight’ Clips, ‘Dream House’ TV Spots & ‘Vamp’ Battle Axe

This morning Aullidos has shared the first two Spanish-language clips from Jaume Balagueró’s Sleep Tight (Mientras Duermes), a new thriller from Filmax. Watch them inside. “The residents of the building where Cesar works as a doorman are not aware of the overtime he has been putting in. Apparently, he is at their service both day and night.

Also beyond the break are the first two TV Spots from Universal’s Dream House, the Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz starrer from director Jim Sheridan hitting theaters September 30. “The Sheridan-helmed psychological thriller follows a family that relocates into what appears to be the ideal residence in small town Connecticut. However, the husband (Craig) and wife (Watts) are disturbed to discover that their beautiful new home was the site of another family’s slaughter, believed to be at the hands of the husband who survived.

Former “Greek” star Scott Michael Foster is joining ABC’s midseason series “The River” as a recurring, says Deadline. On the horror drama chronicling a family and TV crew’s efforts to locate a missing explorer in the Amazon, Foster will play a thrill-seeking, adventurous cameraman who may be hiding a secret.

Lastly, check out this low resolution new look at Amy Heckerling’s Vamps. Normally we’d wait for a hi-res version, but it’s the coolest still released to date. The film is selling quietly at the TIFF. A Distributor could be found soon for the Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter, Sigourney Weaver and Richard Lewis starrer. “‘Vamps’ tells the modern day tale of two young beautiful female vampires living the good nightlife in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize their immortality.” Click the inside image for the old gallery.

[News Bites]: Cameron Brainstorms ‘Terminator 5,’ King’s Latest Optioned, Snipes on ‘Blade’s Return & More

“The Silence of the Lambs” helmer Jonathan Demme has optioned feature film rights to Stephen King’s upcoming novel “11/22/63″ and is set to write, direct and produce, Variety reports. The book follows Jake Epping, a 35-year-old high school English teacher from Maine who travels back in time to try and prevent President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. It’s unclear how this is remotely horror, but other sites are reporting on it. Figured we might as well squeeze it in this edition of News Bites.

In prison for tax evasion, Blade star Wesley Snipes chatted with IGN about a possible return to the vampire franchise that’s already spawned two sequels, a TV and cartoon series. “It would be nice to fulfill some of the really cool plans we had for ‘Blade’ but didn’t get the chance to go live with. Some people forget or overlook my/our contribution to this current trend,” says Snipes. “The ‘Gaming’ community knows and the streets give us credits, but the movie world frequently plays us like the ‘ugly stepchild’ or the ‘kitchen help,’ especially when the conversation revolves around the ‘boys in tights’ or ‘the bat’.” Snipes continues, “Getting asked this question all the time, my response is: ‘Under the right circumstances, with the right team, yes, I’d do another one.’ But don’t get me wrong; I’m not waiting around for the opportunity. I’ve got plenty to do, plus an unraveled character in the works who I think will give ‘Blade’ a helluva run for his money.

The official website has now been launched for Filmax’s Sleep Tight, which opens in Spain on October 14. Directed by [REC]‘s Jaume Balagueró, the pic follows the residents of the building where Cesar works as a doorman are not aware of the overtime he has been putting in. Apparently, he is at their service both day and night.

The Playlist is reporting that director Justin Lin says that he’s met with both James Cameron(!) and Arnold Schwarzenegger to talk about Terminator 5. Lin will first direct the next Fast and the Furious sequel, while Arnie is commited to The Last Stand, but what comes after could be something of wonder. “Just even this week, I had a great meeting with Arnold and James Cameron, just sitting down unofficially. And James is so gracious because he’s not part of the project, he’s not going to be producing, but it was great of him just as a filmmaker to take time out to just talk.” Click the link for more.

Hitfix confirmed old news that both Steve Kloves and David Yates, who wrote/directed the last four Harry Potter films, will be teaming for Warner Bros. Pictures’ adaptation of Stephen King’s apocalyptic tale The Stand. The 1978 “The Stand” is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.
