[2013 HORROR MOVIE PREVIEW] SONY/SCREEN GEMS/FILM DISTRICT

While Sony and Screen Gems typically pump out the horror, most of the genre films they release fail to deliver. This is because the heft of their releases are franchises that they hope to (and do) cash in on. Not to mention that many of the Screen Gems titles are made for kids, and not hardcore horror fans.

Last year saw another Resident Evil and Underworld, both “fine” by sequel standards, alongside Ghost Rider and Total Recall. There’s four incredibly bland franchise films.

2013 looks promising, though, as the first quarter sees not just Carrie, but also the hotly anticipated Evil Dead reboot; it’s an understatement to say that horror comes out strong next year. In fact, the success of Evil Dead could potentially propel the genre into a new age of dark horror. READ MORE

Linkin Park Release Video For “Castle Of Glass”

Linkin Park has teamed up with Medal Of Honor Warfighter to bring you a music video for “Castle Of Glass”, which comes off their latest album Living Things (review). The video splices imagery of a family that has just learned that their soldier husband/father has died with band performance as well as images from the upcoming video game (out Oct. 23rd). You can watch the video below.

Personally, I think the video is too stylized and uses way too much slow-motion. “Castle Of Glass” is a faster paced song and using all that slo-mo drags down the energy of the song. What do you think? READ MORE

[BD Review] ‘Meeting Evil’ Challenges Indifference With Extreme Situations

If you asked someone on the street what they believe horror is, they more than likely won’t tell you bad customer service, jerk bosses, and cheating spouses. They more than likely won’t tell you a picture perfect life is having two kids and a white picket fence. Meeting Evil, directed by Chris Fisher, delves into modern day horrors like the above and puts a twist on them. Based on the 1992 novel by Thomas Berger, Meeting Evil follows the story of John Felton, an average every day guy living in suburbia. On the same day John gets fired from his real estate job, a stranger named Richie shows up at his door and takes him on a murderous joyride through town. READ MORE

Combichrist And Noisia Discuss Scoring DmC: Devil May Cry

Video game developers Capcom and Ninja Theory have confirmed today that both Noisia and Combichrist are the composers for DmC: Devil May Cry, the upcoming hack n’ slash action/adventure game for Xbox 360 and PS3. There will also be licensed Combichrist songs within the game. A sample of the soundtrack can be heard below (you can download it for free here).

Noisia states, “It’s been an awesome experience working with Ninja Theory on the game. We had great freedom but were also bound by certain criteria typical in the game world. These are challenging boundaries (for example; consistency in sonics over 180 minutes of music) but also lots of space in terms of dynamics & progression and instrumentation being able to create soundscapes without having to worry about holding the attention of a dancefloor. Their music director was great to work with, good vibes. It’s great when you get to play to your strengths. Also, the game kicks ass!

Combichrist lead singer Andy LaPlegua adds, “As an avid gamer myself I was honored to be asked to work on this project. I had a lot of fun digging myself into Dante’s psyche in order to create music to match the battle scenes and am equally as excited to license existing Combichrist music. I’m looking forward playing the finished game when it comes out.READ MORE

All Uncharted 2 DLC Is Available For The Price Of “On The House”

Remember the good old days when eventually Bungie would make their multiplayer maps free? Well guess what, THOSE DAYS ARE OVER. Companies want your money, and they want it bad. You know back when Nintendo and Super Nintendo were around, you could normally pay 60-100 dollars per game. Well, most games now are stuck on a 60 dollar price point. Clearly that isn’t enough. With some games you’re looking to spend at least 100 dollars over the life of the game to get all the DLC. If you have the patience you’re better off waiting for a game of the year edition or for a dramatic price drop. Well, amidst the ashes of all your wasted money, Uncharted developer Naughty Dog and Sony have decided to let you have all of the DLC for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for free. Head past the break for the DLC list.

Ellie And Joel Get Ambushed In This New Trailer For The Last Of Us

Uncharted developer Naughty Dog’s next game is The Last of Us, and it looks incredible. It follows Ellie and Joel, two survivors trying to make it across a post-apocalyptic wasteland that was the United States. Originally, it looked like an action horror game with its apocalyptic setting and Cordyceps zombies, but while those elements remain, they aren’t the focus. This new trailer, which you can watch after the jump, focuses on another horror that inhabits the world–humans.

Sony Puts Down Stakes On New ‘Dracula’ Franchise!

DraculaSony22712 Sony Puts Down Stakes On New Dracula Franchise!

Sheesh. There are so many Dracula projects in development, I don’t even know what to call this project. Sony hasn’t given a title yet, so right now I’ll call it Dracula or Untitled Dracula Origin Story. This is not to be confused with Universal’s Dracula Year Zero or Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D. It’s also completely different from the Guillermo Del Toro/Chuck Hogan contemporary telling of the story

The Sony version is based off a sought-after pitch by Jason Keller and is intended to be a period-piece franchise starter produced by Joe Roth and Palak Patel.

Per Deadline, “Sony Pictures has acquired a pitch from scribe Jason Keller for a period origin story on the Dracula mythology that will be produced by Joe Roth and Palak Patel. I’m hearing the deal was high six figures against seven-figures. It becomes the latest in a growing list of films about the iconic vampire borne out of the legend of Vlad the Impaler. Insiders at Sony would only say the intention is to launch a period franchise… Keller most recently scripted Relativity Media’s ‘Mirror Mirror’

Let’s hope this project is nothing like Mirror, Mirror. READ MORE

More Evil Dead Cast To Read From Book Of The Dead!

Now this is what I call out-of-the-box casting.

Thumbsucker and Carriers star Lou Taylor Pucci (an ex-Sundance darling once targeted by Steven Spielberg) is in talks to join the young ensemble of The Evil Dead remake.

Pucci will play Eric, an intense academic whose intellectual curiosity gets his group of friends into trouble. In short, he’ll be reading out of the “Book of the Dead” and resurrecting “Him”.

He joins Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Bruce Campbell i the remake of Raimi’s classic being helmed by Fede Alvarez.

FilmDistrict hopes to get it into theaters by April 12, 2013. READ MORE

Lily Collins Drops Out Of ‘The Evil Dead’, Who Should Take Her Place?

LilyCollinsLeavesEvilDead12412 Lily Collins Drops Out Of The Evil Dead, Who Should Take Her Place?

Lily Collins (The Blind Side, Priest, Mirror Mirror) has just dropped out of playing the lead role of “Mia” in Ghost House/Mandate Pictures remake of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.

Jeff Sneider of Variety attributes it to “scheduling issues“. While it’s nice to have our scoop confirmed that she was indeed hired for the role – her departure now leads a big void. After all, she’s playing the hero – the remake’s equivalent of “Ash”.

In this version, the story centers on five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. As we also exclusively reported, there is a drug subplot.

I’ve read the script, and “Mia” is a good, meaty, role for a young actress. It’s not as one-note and comic as the character of “Ash”, but it’s got lots of cool layers and should be very physically demanding.

With that in mind, who do you think should replace her?

Fede Alvarez directs the redo of Sam Raimi’s cult classic 1981 The Evil Dead from his own screenplay co-written with Rodo Sayagues. Revisions were done by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody. It’s scheduled for release on April 12th, 2013. READ MORE

Watch The Resident Evil: Retribution Trailer Now, In Case You’re Really Impatient

Get ready to cringe or rejoice, as I have the brand spanking new trailer for the fifth flick in the popular Resident Evil film franchise, the unfortunately titled Re5ident Evil: Retribution 3D. It’s like Hollywood has some sort of awful movie title generator where you pull a lever and whatever this machine comes up with is going to be the title of your film. If it’s a sequel, you need to replace an ‘E’ with a 3, an ‘A’ with a 4, or a ‘S’ with a 5. That’s Movie Title Creation 101, folks. If it’s in 3D, you also have to add that to the title, because people are stupid, so how else are they going to know it’s in 3D?

An Open Letter To The Producers Of ‘Evil Dead’: Nice Script! Now Go Easy On The CGI!

An Open Letter To The Producers Of Evil Dead: Nice Script! Now Go Easy On The CGI!

So I’ve read a draft of the Evil Dead script by Fede Alvarez & Rodo Mendez. I’m not sure if this one includes the polish by Diablo Cody, but I kind of doubt it since her name isn’t on the title page and the draft is dated around the time her involvement was announced.

Aside from a few clunky exchanges, I actually thought it was pretty good! It’s far less comedic than Evil Dead 2 which is a smart move. Remaking that film is a fool’s errand. What it does capture well is the madcap energy, crazy roaming POV shots, demonic presence and over the top gore of the series. Even though the characters are modern teenagers, it’s very much an Evil Dead film. Indisputably so. And the drug subplot is used to nice effect as well.

But this isn’t a script review or any kind of spoiler piece. The only reason I’ve said as much as I have about the script – or even mention having read it – is that this is a flat out naked plea to Ghost House, Mandate, and FilmDistrict to take it easy on the CGI. This thing could be a lot of fun, a true gift to horror fans – but if you turn it into The Thing 2011 it would just be flat out crushing.

Look, you’ve already got a leg up on that film by having a coherent story, most of the heavy lifting is done! Just don’t f*ck it up! And this is the EXACT kind of film that will be tempting to overdo in post and turn into a cartoon. The set pieces and effects and the carnage are truly insane. Keep it that way! Just have confidence in your practical effects team. Even if you start thinking some of the shots are iffy and might take the audience out of the movie – I guarantee you that just completely drawing all over them will take the audience out of the film even more. I’d rather see a bad practical effect than a bad digital one any day. Please trust your audience – they’re not stupid. They don’t need a bunch of pointless, weightless, graphics to feel like they got their money’s worth.

Also, this isn’t some strict vegan no CGI plea. I totally understand the necessity of digitally enhancing backgrounds, erasing wires and even enhancing the practical effects. Just don’t turn it into a cartoon! That’s all! Find as many screengrabs as you can from The Thing 2011 and Fright Night 2011, post them on a bulletin board in the edit bay and write “NO” on them in big red marker. And if you hire KNB (or whomever), let them do their thing!

You’ve got a decent script that I suspect has gotten better since I’ve read it* and I’m optimistic that Fede Alvarez can pull this thing off. You have the opportunity to steer hard-R studio horror away from the middle of the road and put the cojones back on.

Please do so. I know your product needs to make money. There’s nothing wrong with that. Just prove to us that it was designed to be loved as well.

*with a polish by Cody at the top of her game? Almost certainly. READ MORE

Seven if you count The Darkness II, which also looks incredible. READ MORE

BREAKING: We’ve Discovered Who Plays The Lead In ‘The Evil Dead’ Remake — Meet The New Ash!

BREAKING: Weve Discovered Who Plays The Lead In The Evil Dead Remake Meet The New Ash!

Ghost House and Mandate Pictures are going BIG with their casting for their forthcoming remake of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead, which begins lensing this March in New Zealand.

Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that Lily Collins (The Blind Side, Priest, Mirror Mirror) is in final negotiations to play “Mia” in FilmDistrict’s reboot aiming for release on April 12, 2013.

*Update* Mia is the LEAD, and is the female version of Ashley J. Williams (Ash), once donned by Bruce Campbell in the original trilogy. To reveal more would ruin the movie.

As previously explained, David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the friend who is heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.

After a recent overdose, Mia struggles with her new-found sobriety. She begins acting insane, so it comes as no surprise that nobody believes her crazy claims of coyote dogs and trees attacking her!

The Evil Dead Gets Very Specific With More Story Details!

Yesterday we learned that Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict would be headed to New Zealand in March to begin filming Evil Dead, the remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 The Evil Dead. Fede Alvarez directs from his own screenplay co-written with Rodo Sayagues. Revisions were done by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (and I’m willing to bet her contributions were significant – you don’t pay that kind of money for a cosmetic touch-up).

The Evil Dead Reboot is Finally Happening, Courtesy of FilmDistrict

It’s officially happening. After several years of talking, the Sam Raimi-Rob Tapert remake of The Evil Dead is moving forward with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and FilmDistrict partnering with Ghost House Pictures on a worldwide deal for Sony Pictures to distribute.

We broke the news on the remake in July, tapping Fede Alvarez to write and direct Ghost House Pictures’ remake of their seminal 1981 cult horror film The Evil Dead.

The remake is on track for a production start next year.

Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues and Juno/Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody did revisions on the draft. The story centers on five friends holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. As we exclusively reported, there is a drug subplot.

The franchise had ended with 1992′s Army of Darkness.

‘The Evil Dead’ Will Be A True Reboot With… Drugs?

The Evil Dead Will Be A True Reboot With... Drugs?

Back on July 12 we exclusively broke the news that Fede Alvarez would be directing The Evil Dead, Mandate ahd Ghost House’s reboot of the 1981 Sam Raimi classic of the same name that spawned two sequels.

It was soon revealed that Alvarez was working from a screenplay developed by Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body). No story details were revealed at the time, but that didn’t stop us from digging.

After 3 long months, Bloody D has finally scored the inside scoop on the plot crunch for The Evil Dead, and honestly, it’s pretty damn disappointing.

The reboot is true to the roots of Raimi’s original as it follows a group of friends who hole up in a remote cabin, discover the “Book of the Dead” and accidentally unleash an unrelenting group of Deadites.

The “new spin” is the motivation behind the trip, with the lead character taking his younger sister to the family’s cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she’s actually possessed.

The worst part, though, is that one of the friends unleashes the demons by deciphering the Book of the Dead and reading the passages aloud. (Yeah, because just some kid would know how to read ancient text. Sigh.) The only way I can get behind this is if the film references the original (meaning this is a new group of kids in the exact same cabin) and Bruce Campbell cameo’s as “Ash” (who has now aged quite considerably).

That’s it folks. What are your thoughts? I still say the entire film should be taking place inside a S-Mart. READ MORE
