[BD Review] ‘Prometheus’ Has Epic Scope, Muddled & Uneven

With my review posted here, and Evan’s spoiler-fueled discussion coming after release, below are David Harley’s thoughts on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, the quasi-Alien prequel in theaters Friday.

In the latest film, “Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

[Random Cool] Images From ‘Prometheus’ Artist Gutalin

While these images aren’t directly from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, they definitely share strands of the same DNA (to co-opt a talking point from the film). Russian artist Alex Kozhanov (aka Gutalin) is (quite evidently) influenced by H.R. Giger and was hired to recreate the derelict ship from Alien for the film. While these images aren’t from Prometheus – I suppose you’ll have to wait for the film to see the breadth of his design work for it – they are certainly highly evocative of the Alien universe and are thus worth a look. Thanks to BD reader “Jon” for the heads up.

New ‘Prometheus’ Pics Take You To The Edge Of The Universe

PromFeat40612 New Prometheus Pics Take You To The Edge Of The Universe

It’s no secret that while Ridley Scott’s Prometheus looks to be very much set in the Alien universe, it’s concerned the themes of exploration in general. Based on everything we’ve seen, the film seems very much to be about our need to see what’s out there. To that end, the new pics that hit today are very much in that vein. They even originated on a star map included in the new Prometheus Facebook app.

Ridley Scott, director of ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ returns to the genre he helped define. With ‘Prometheus’, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. We Already Know There Are Space Jockeys In ‘Prometheus’, But Here Are Their Suits!

The LA Times has an interesting article on Prometheus today, and there’s definitely a smattering of the Alien mythology in the pic they included.

It’s interesting that they ran this exchange with co-writer Damon Lindelof, “What the two do have in common, Lindelof said, is that the universe in which each takes place shares a similar aesthetic. When the writer signed on to the film, Scott was already deep into discussions with production designer Arthur Max, whose résumé includes work on “Se7en” and “Gladiator.” Scott took Lindelof to what he described as a “thick, dramatic vault door” where five twentysomethings who “looked like they were playing video games” were rendering images of planets, creatures and space suits.

I think at this point it’s safe to say that the films share more than a “common aesthetic”.

Aliens Spotted On ‘Prometheus’ Set!

It’s kind of baffling that nobody can really pinpoint exactly what Prometheus is yet. Whether it’s a prequel, stand-alone film or something in the same universe but not directly related doesn’t really matter anymore though, because a worker at Pinewood Studios has reportedly spotted a few Aliens hanging around the set.

According to the insider, he “can confirm seeing 3 aliens having lunch. Not the whole costume but blueish costumes and the unmistakable heads hanging around their shoulders. The alien heads were the same shape but no markings, only a plane bronze colour. As for the suits black boots and shoulder pads the rest was a Chelsea blue body suit could be for SFX, all the sets around the back of the bond stage have huge green chromokey maybe that’s a clue.I have witnessed foam cut outs of unmistakable aliens all cut in half lengh ways so they could be in the floor walls etc and very much from the original film.

The spy also spotted a “a very, very long tunnel that leads to an enormous structure at the back of the stage which is the same height as the stage and probably extends out another 200 ft.“, which he speculates is where the Space Jockey scenes will be shot.

I’m really in love with the idea of seeing Xenomorphs run around again as long as it isn’t another Alien Vs. Predator film, so color me excited – I think that’s a lime green hue.
