Today in horror we celebrate the birthday of composer Danny Elfman and recognize the music and compositions that he has brought to our genre! Elfman’s work has been heard in all but two of Tim Burton’s films (Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd) as well as such films as Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and more. He also composed the main themes for The Simpsons as well as the “March Of The Dead” in Army Of Darkness.
Born May 29th in Los Angeles, California, Elfman became known to many people through the rock band Oingo Boingo, who were known for their heavy Halloween-themed concerts. His first film score was for 1980′s Forbidden Zone, which was directed by his brother, Richard Elfman. Since then, Elfman has gone on to score for some 90 films and shows, has been nominated four times for an Academy Award (he has never won), and won 33 various other awards, including the Richard Kirk award, which is given to composers who make significant contributions to film and television music.
Join me below in listening to some of my favorite cues from Danny Elfman as we wish him a very happy 59th birthday! READ MORE
Tomorrow, August 31st Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi/Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and Natasha Calis as a broken family that has a lot more than divorce to contend with when Calis’ character is possessed by a demon. At that point they turn to Tzadok, played by Matisyahu, for help.
I recently sat down with Matisyahu on a tour stop in Los Angeles. We discussed his transition from music to film, the role of demons in the Jewish religion, and the Evil Dead. It turns out he’s never seen any of the movies! Now, I’m including this because it’s a cool exchange. Matisyahu’s interests are likely different than yours or mine, which I respect. In fact, I was struck by his sense of ease and his genial nature. Never judge anyone for being new to horror, just turn them on to it! Which is hopefully what we did here!
The film, “is the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.”

While it is yet to be seen whether or not things will be as dire in the world of “AMAZING SPIDERMAN” for the real Peter Parker (Take that ‘ULTIMATES’ universe) as it is currently within the pages of “ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN”, one thing we can tell you is that Rick Remender isn’t going to make it any easier. Today it was announced that the upcoming “SPIDER – ISLAND” story-line would be spilling over into the world of Remender’s “VENOM” monthly, and you can get all the details on the story below.
WRITTEN BY: Rick Remender
ILLUSTRATIONS BY: Tom Fowler
“With a whole of city of Spider-Men & Women to fight through, can Flash maintain control of a suit that wants nothing less than to put an end to any and all wall-crawlers? Or will the kill switch finally be thrown on America’s ultimate man in black?
Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and editor Stephen Wacker went to great lengths to ensure that Venom had a few very important roles in Spider-Island,” said Remender. “I can’t give away who we’ll be seeing Venom go up against, but they are all huge characters and fights that Spider-fans have been itching to see. Tom Fowler’s pages so far are jaw-dropping and there are some legendary bouts >coughcough< awaiting readers."

Obviously Rick Remender’s “VENOM” story-line hasn’t been exactly what fans had been hoping for. Not to say that the series hasn’t had its own share of quality content, but in the end fans want one thing: Venom. Unfortuneatly, what they have gotten has sort of been a “diet” Venom of sorts, but rest easy readers, because beyond the break we present you with a 3 page preview that just might make you wet yourselves (I am taking no responsibility for ruining your furniture) in relief. He’s psychotic, he’s symbiotic, (and before this begins to sound like the lead in to a chorus for a bad 90s Saturday morning cartoon I will stop with the rythming) and this December he’s BACK! On December 29th publisher Marvel Comics will be releasing the second issue in the return of “CARNAGE”, and inside you can get your first ever look at the issue with a 5 page (UNLETTERED) preview. Alright “CARNAGE” fans, your wait is over, and just in time for Halloween publisher Marvel Comics will be delivering to you the return of everyone’s favorite psychotic symbiote. The first issue drops this Wednesday, but if you make the jump you can check out an all new 5 page preview along with some exclusive variant covers! Read on for the skinny!
Consider this the “its about freakin’ time” portion of your news today. Comic Book Resources has broke the news that the psychotic symbiote Carnage will be returning to the illustrated page this October for an all new mini-series. The character has been on a 5 year hiatus since his “death” within the pages of “NEW AVENGERS” after The Sentry flew Cletus Kasady into space and tore the character in half. Since that issue all the way back in 2005 the monster has been a non-issue for the heroes (and villains) of the Marvel universe but thanks to writer Zeb Wells and illustrator Clayton Craine that will all change in October. The series will be centered around the now “adult” symbiote and Spiderman (his year couldn’t be any less fun so far could it?) and will also contain some cameos from Iron Man and other Marvel heavy hitters. Below you can take a look at the first artwork from the series.
