[Sundance '13] eOne Gobbles Up ‘We Are What We Are’

Another horror sale has come in from Sundance, this time it’s Stake Land director Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are (review here). It’s a remake of Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau’s picture about a family of cannibals that’s been moved from its original setting of Mexico City, to a poor part of the Catskills region in New York State.

eOne picked up the film, which was reportedly heatedly contested amongst bidders, for a low seven figures for the U.S. rights. eOne will role out the film to theaters in a platform formation.

In the film, “A devastating storm washes up clues that lead authorities closer and closer to the cannibalistic Parker family.” Cast includes Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Michael Parks, Wyatt Russell and Kelly McGillis.

We’ll keep you posted on a release date!

Vampires Attack in Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Stake Land’

In the ultimate tale of survival in the face of a dying world, Jim Mickle’s breakthrough movie, Stake Land (review) adds a frightening new element to the equation: vampires. The award-winning crowd-pleaser comes to Blu-ray and DVD on August 2, 2011, via Dark Sky Films. This extraordinary movie will be available on DVD, and on two-disc Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray, both containing a wealth of bonus material.

Check out an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the ‘Barn” attack sequences inside!

America has fallen. A vampiric scourge sweeps the nation, turning brother on brother and parent on child as the blood-hungry beasts take deeper and deeper hold upon the land. It’s hard for the survivors to know whether to be more afraid of the creatures themselves or the violent religious groups that have sprung up in response, but there is clearly only one choice: fight or die. Connor Paolo (Gossip Girl, Alexander, Mystic River) stars as Martin, a teenager whose family has been slaughtered. His traveling companion is a taciturn, hardened vampire killer known simply as Mister (Nick Damici, In the Cut, World Trade Center), and together they trudge across the land in search of the rumored safe haven of New Eden.

BD Review: ‘Stake Land’ An Ambitious Stab at Vamp Genre

I’m ready to take a beating on this one. I have yet to meet a single person who didn’t enjoy Jim Mickle’s Stake Land, his post-apocalyptic quasi-vampire film now in limited theaters from Dark Sky Films. Thus, take my review with a grain of salt, because apparently I’m out of my mind.

Even through all of the flaws, Mickle and Damici deliver a highly ambitious film that was probably too much to handle.

Click the title above for the full review. I’m curious if you guys agree with me or the majority, so click on over here to write your own review and tell all of BD what YOU thought.

Full Details, New ‘Stake Land’ Image

Having just announced an April 22 release, Dark Sky Films passed alone a new image and the official synopsis for Stake Land.

America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Gossip Girl’s Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (In the Cut’s Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead.

Simply known as Mister, the vampire stalker takes Martin on a journey through the locked-down towns of America’s heartland, searching for a better place while taking down any bloodsuckers that cross their path. Along the way they recruit fellow travellers, including a nun (Kelly McGillis) who is caught in a crisis of faith when her followers turn into ravenous beasts. This ragtag family unit cautiously moves north, avoiding major thoroughfares that have been seized by The Brethren, a fundamentalist militia headed by Jebedia Loven (Tony award-winning actor Michael Cerveris) that interprets the plague as the Lord’s work.

Director Jim Mickle first grabbed the attention of horror film fans with his zombie-rat thriller Mulberry Street, in which Damici also starred and served as co-writer. They have teamed up again to deliver an even darker and bloodier shocker. Drawing on the post-apocalyptic frenzy described by Richard Matheson (author of the novel “I Am Legend”) and George Romero, Stake Land is a road movie with fangs and a phantasmagoric journey.

Stake Land also stars horror movie icon Danielle Harris (from Hatchet II, Halloween, Halloween II) and was produced by indie horror producer-writer-director Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter).

‘Mulberry Street’ Director’s ‘Stake Land’ Gets April 22 Release

Having premiered at last September’s Toronto International Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, Dark Sky Films will release Mulberry Street director Jim Mickle’s Stake Land in limited theaters on April 22. No locations have been listed yet.

The violent horror pic takes place following a global spread of vampirism. McGillis plays a nun who joins a small team of survivors (including Nick Damici, Danielle Harris of Halloween, Halloween 2 and Hatchet 2, and Conor Paolo of “Gossip Girl”) as they make a treacherous journey north to safety through the war-torn U.S. McGillis’ character, “Sister,” faces a crisis of faith during the vampire bloodshed, ultimately taking up arms to do battle with her newly formed family unit.
