Drew Goddard Talks ‘Cloverfield 2′ And ‘Robopocalypse’!

Cloverfield30512 Drew Goddard Talks Cloverfield 2 And Robopocalypse!

With the release of The Cabin In The Woods looming next month, I met up with Drew Goddard (the film’s director and co-writer) in Hollywood this afternoon for a lengthy chat.

While 95% of our conversation naturally centered around Cabin, we briefly touched on the status Cloverfield 2 and his screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse. For those who need a refresher on the latter, it’s based on the book by Daniel H. Wilson which explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.

Also be sure to check out the rest of my interview with Goddard when it hits – I’ll be breaking it into two pieces. One will publish before the release of The Cabin In The Woods in the coming days/weeks. Then I’ve got a more spoiler heavy segment scheduled to hit after you’ve had a chance to see the film. He’s a smart, talented and enthusiastic guy and I think you’ll enjoy the read.

Hit the jump for the updates, which include Goddard’s thoughts on Cloverfield 2 possibly not being found-footage. READ MORE

The Tale Of Two Unused ‘Super 8′ Posters

Right before Super 8 hit theatres, a Drew Struzan-like poster for the film hit the web. It turned out to be fan-made, but it managed to capture Super 8‘s nostalgic whimsy pretty nicely and got a lot of attention.

When it was discovered that it was fake, I think a lot of people – myself included – wondered why the studio hadn’t made classic poster art for the Amblin flick and now we have an answer: they did.

According to Daniel Skubal, him and his girlfriend, Veronica LaPage, were asked by Bad Robot to come up with a poster design for the film, which sadly did not end up getting used – there doesn’t seem to be any sour grapes between the artists and the studio, though. You can read the full story here and check out the art after the break. While I like the two concept posters, I actually prefer the fan-made one (I mean, I guess these are technically fan-made, too). They’re very well done, but don’t capture the essence of the film and just seem like fully colored storyboards. That’s not the artists’ fault, though; they hadn’t seen the movie before they were asked to create them.

Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams!

One of the most anticipated films of the summer is writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (review), about a small Ohio town in 1979 that suffers a rash of bizarre occurrences following an explosive train crash nearby.

In anticipation of the release of the movie – which was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and in many ways harkens back to the likes of early Amblin-backed films like E.T. and The Goonies – B-D’s Chris Eggertsen recently had the opportunity to attend a press roundtable with Abrams to get his take on the film, which comes out in theaters everywhere this Friday. Spielberg Still Thinks About Future of ‘Jaws’ Franchise

With Jaws celebrating its 36th anniversary, AICN‘s Eric Vespe (aka Quint) recently got to chat with the man himself, Steven Spielberg, about the film and his career in general. We got a tidbit from the interview last week, when word got out that the Blu-ray is in the works without any sort of digital alterations (!), and now you can read the interview in its entirety right here.

Jaws is easily one of the most memorable films of all-time and it’s always been assumed that Spielberg was asked to come back for the sequel (which he turned down because hates shooting at sea). He moved onto greener pastures and left the franchise, but it seems as thought the shark that refused to work is always on his mind.

When asked about how he would have approached making a sequel, Spielberg responded, “No, no idea at all, but I have a very, very good scene which I thought would have been good for a sequel someday, which I will tell you someday because I don’t want it in print. But I’ll tell you my scene some day. Every time I think of this scene I think, ‘Hmmm, could this be another Jaws movie?’ and I have to immediately stop myself and immediately pull myself back down to Earth.

Now, the odds of him actually returning is probably slim to none, but the world would certainly be a better place for it. Each of the three follow-ups Universal made during the late 70′s and 80′s are either unwatchable or unintentionally hilarious (check past the break for the alternate ending of Jaws: The Revenge to see what I mean), and seeing him return would at least end the franchise on a sweet note – and not one that sounds like a mentally challenged lion.

Video Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams Knows Character Development

This morning Paramount Pictures released a slew of generic interviews for Super 8, but the only one that truly matters is that of director J.J. Abrams. While he does trail off a bit, and waste time plugging the iPhone application, he does tell of some tremendous filmmaking lessons for inspiring filmmakers.

In the three videos he talks about his two ideas – a film about kids making a super 8 movies in ’80s, and the other a creature feature – and how it mixed the two. One was about group of characters he loved without a compelling story, so he meshed them into one idea. He also goes into depth about finding the right kids and making sure their characters were authentic and believable. He also speaks for the first time on Steven Speilberg’s involvement revealing that he was “deeply involved in script, casting and editing [process].

Fans of Spielberg will have their minds blown on June 10 when Super 8 attacks theaters.

Update: we added the following video clip from Empire featuring both Spielberg and Abrams!

Update #2: Second clip inside.

Update: A new clue has surfaced in one of the various TV spots. As displayed in the poster, the water tower is the focal point as a ball of light emanates from behind it. In the newer TV spots it’s implied that whatever “it” is can be found IN said water tower as it’s literally covered in metal from objects around the town (you can see all of the objects being pulled upwards in various spots).

Moviefone has premiered the first official clip from Paramount Pictures’ Super 8 that teams director J.J. Abrams with producers Steven Spielberg.

Two New Stills From ‘Super 8′

Super 8 is purposely being kept vague, but that’s not really a surprise considering the set of Star Trek was guarded like Fort Knox. Abrams likes to keep people guessing, and I’d rather that than see 700 clips spoiling every great scene before the movie opens.

Today, Paramount released two new stills from the geek favored director’s latest, showing us… well, absolutely nothing. Check past the break for the stills, featuring the kids shooting their Super 8 film and staring off into the distance.

Stunning ‘Super 8′ IMAX Trailer Shifts Tone

Shifting away from the “scary” elements of the teaser and Super Bowl TV Spot, the brand new IMAX trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 bleeds Steven Spielberg films such as Goonies, E.T. and War of the Worlds, focusing on the kids more than the apparent creature. Something interesting to note is the references to “magnetism,” which also kind of reminds me of Joe Dante’s classic The Explorers. I honestly believe we have have a “true” Amblin production on our hands…

Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, AJ Michalka all star in the Paramount pic that begins “In the summer of 1979, when a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Website Detectives Discover ‘Super 8′ Creature Origin?

We don’t give enough credit to the people who make viral discoveries (wink, wink), so without further adieu a big thumbs up to Latino Review who observed some interesting footage hiding within s8editingroom.com, the Super 8 viral site that’s been online for over a week now.

Doing some serious detective work, the site writes: “it’s not an alien, monster or creature.

It may be an energized living object similar to the 1997′s “Flubber” with Robin Williams. We’re not saying it is a rubber-like super-bouncy substance, but it is an object.

The evidence is prevalent in the hidden images, and trailer, that can be dissected over at Latino Review. Go check it out and then return here to comment. Did they stumble onto something?

Second ‘Super 8′ Trailer’s Soul Bleeds Steven Spielberg!

Update: Hidden within the trailer was a link to this newly unlocked website called “the editing” room that carries a slew of new cryptic images.

Paramount Pictures has launched the official Twitter page for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. While they spent the morning blowing up my phone with unnecessary retweets (I wouldn’t recommend following them if my life depended on it), they did use the social networking platform to release the second full trailer for the sci-fi horror film.

The trailer screams ’80s Steven Spielberg (as it was produced by his Amblin company) and looks to once again carry some hidden clues. What do you see?

Just yesterday we were supplied with the following synopsis for the flick arriving in theaters June 10: “In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. In theaters June 10, the Steven Spileberg/J.J. Abrams collaboration follows a bunch of kids in the ’70s who are shooting a zombie movie with a Super 8. When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame.

OMFG of the Day: The Pieces Come Together in ‘Super 8′ Viral – UPDATED!

I have a feeling some of you guys are going to want to boycott Paramount’s Super 8 by the time it’s all said and done, but in all honesty this is some brilliant stuff. Over the past few months we here at Bloody Disgusting have been keeping a close eye on all virals surrounding the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration. In fact, there’s so much stuff you haven’t seen that most of you would probably thank me for not stirring the pot (hidden maps, actual referenced locations, and hidden database files).

Yesterday we accidentally stumbled onto one of the coolest viral games ever initiated, and many loyal Super 8 followers have already (sorta) deciphered the code – yet they still missed a few beats (we’ll help you out). Per our report, Apple.com has been constantly changing the HD files for the Super Bowl TV Spot. What does this mean? Each trailer appears to be the same, but it’s completely different. Dates appear and vanish, images appear and vanish; this has been going on for 24 hours now. Inside you’ll find a collection of the puzzle pieces, but I’d like to make this important additional note: the pieces are connected by the three dots on each image, therefore some of these aren’t connected correctly.

Keep your eyes peeled (so will we) and feel free to e-mail us with any major discoveries that we’ve missed.

‘Super 8′ Creature, Date Appears…Before Vanishing!

It’s no secret that J.J. Abrams likes secrets, hence the reason why I originally panned frame by frame through the Super Bowl Super 8 trailer. I came across the date September/November/December 19, 1962 (on November 19 Fidel Castro accepts removal of Soviet weapons), while also dwelling on a frame that may or may not have been a reflection of the film’s alien creature.

Well, I decided to revisit the trailer on Apple only to discover that the Super Bowl spot has been replaced!!! The new trailer has the date, the billboard of “Lost” references, and what looks like the monster’s jaw all removed. Did we catch on quicker than they expected? Go watch the new trailer and see if you can’t find any fresh clues. Journey beyond the break to see all of the early freeze-framed stills. Paramount will release on June 10.

Read the Original ‘Poltergeist’ Treatment: ‘Night Time’!

Something insanely cool was shared with the Poltergeist Fan Site who posted the original treatment for Poltergeist entitled “Night Time”. The site writes: “In early 1980, Steven Spielberg collaborated by mail on a treatment with Tobe Hooper while Spielberg was shooting “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The treatment, originally titled “Night Time” (perhaps a derivation of the aborted “Night Skies” project), was a ghost story set in the suburbs. Several months after the initial 11 page treatment was written and sold to MGM, Spielberg added about 20 more pages which further fleshed out some of the story’s initial ideas. It’s very interesting to note which elements of the finished film were there from the very beginning. However, more notable are the things which didn’t end up in the shooting script at all. In fact, most of the scenes in the amendment pages are completely different from what would eventually end up on screen. I would argue that what was added/changed later on in the actual screenplay made the story much better.” Wanna read? All you have to do is click here!

War of the Worlds

In H.G. Well’s 1898 novel, “The War of the Worlds,” he invented the myth of invasion from outer space. Martians land near London, conquering all before them, and ruin the metropolis; the fate of civilization and even of the human race remains in doubt until the very last. “The War of the Worlds” is disturbingly realistic both because of its setting — Wells bicycled the route the Martians take on landing — and because of its characters: the superstitious curate, boastful artilleryman, and enterprising medical student are believable if not sympathetic figures, as well as signifying types of fin-de-siecle change and vision.
