Stoker

Watch The Intense First Ever Footage From Park Chan-wook’s English-Language ‘Stoker’!!

Fox Searchlight has locked down a March 1, 2013 release for Park Chan-wook’s english-language debut, Stoker, his vampire tale penned by Ted Foulke (aka Wentworth Miller). ET has shared a tease of the film’s trailer that puts the nasty Stoker family on display. This looks to have all of the good character development seen in Chan-wook’s Korean cinema.

Miller also stars alongside Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Alden Ehrenreich, Phyllis Somerville and Dermot Mulroney.

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

This is the first in a planned trilogy. Park Chan-wook is the Korean master of genre cinema having directed Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace and Lady Vengeance, along with Thirst and JSA. READ MORE

‘Oldboy’ Director Chan-wook Park Tackling The Ultra Violent ‘Brigands Of Rattleborge’!

Chan-wook Park (Oldboy; pictured above) recently wrapped up Stoker for Fox Searchlight and now he turns his attention to, the much more violent, The Brigands Of Rattleborge. I read this script about 5 or 6 years back (back when Mel Gibson was considered a viable name to direct) and it’s pretty hardcore! Park will be right at home!

Per Variety, “South Korean helmer Chan-wook Park (“Oldboy”) is in talks to direct Craig Zahler‘s Black List western ‘The Brigands of Rattleborge,’ which Red Granite Pictures has come on to fully finance and co-produce with Mythology Entertainment. Red Granite toppers Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland will produce with Mythology’s Bradley Fischer (“Shutter Island”). The other Mythology principals are Laeta Kalogridis and James Vanderbilt, who will likely be involved in a producing capacity, though their exact credits, along with those of Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Zahler, are still being worked out.

The film is an “ultra-violent thriller that follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.

Park Chan-wook Only Put Down ‘The Axe’ For A Little Bit, Now He’s Picking It Back Up

Director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and the upcoming Stoker) is loyal to the projects that grab his attention. After he finishes post-production on Stoker he’s going to be circling back to the project he was prepping before that script came along, The Axe.

Chan-wook told the Korea JoongAng Daily that “I was planning to make another film, ‘The Axe,’ before I started shooting ‘Stoker.’ But while I was still seeking investors for that film, I received the screenplay for ‘Stoker.’ So ‘The Axe’ will be my next work, though I need to do some more work on the casting and attracting investors. I’m also thinking about making a historical film, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do that… I’d like to continue working in both Hollywood and Korea. Actually, it doesn’t matter to me where a film is made. If the story is good, I’ll follow it.

The Axe certainly sounds interesting. In the film (a remake of Costa-Gavras’ 2005 film Le Couperet (The Ax), adapted from a novel by Donald E. Westlake), “a middle aged, middle class salaryman loses his job after a downsizing, and after spending the following two years downsizing his lifestyle, he decides to overcome competition in his own personal way: chopping down anyone who gets in the way of his path back into fiscal solvency.

Stoker has no firm release date as of yet, but it’s looking like a Fall 2012 release. READ MORE

Wentworth Miller Goes From ‘Stoker’ To ‘The Disappointments Room’

Wentworth Miller (“Prison Break”) surprised everyone when he wrote Stoker under a pseudonym because he was afraid the script wouldn’t be taken seriously otherwise. Turns out he was right, it’s a great script that might not have gotten a decent chance if had gone out as the writing project from “that guy from that TV show”. I imagine he doesn’t have this problem anymore as The Disappointments Room has just been announced.

Voltage Pictures (The Hurt Locker) is joining up with Killer Films (Mildred Pierce) for The Disappointments Room, Nicolas Chartier and Zev Foreman of Voltage will team with Killer’s Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon to produce. The film “is a dramatic thriller about a woman who moves into a mysterious old house in the country with her husband and young son, only to discover their new home comes with a dark past.

The project is currently out to directors, but I doubt they’ll have much of a problem in that department. Meanwhile, Miller’s Chan-wook Park directed Stoker is still set for release later this year from Fox Searchlight. It stars Nicole Kidman, Dermot Mulroney and Wia Wasikowska.

‘Stoker’ To Make Goode Casting Choice

Chan-Wook Park solidified himself as one of the best directors of the last decade with the Vengeance trilogy, along with the pretty great Thirst and I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK. With Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman set to star and brothers Ridley and Tony Scott producing, his English language debut, Stoker, is beginning to look like a star-studded event.

Last we heard, Colin Firth was being courted for the lead male role in the film, which follows a teenage girl who must deal with the unexpected appearance of a mysterious uncle while mourning the death of her father. Variety just got word that Matthew Goode is in talks for the part. I got to admit, I haven’t seen a lot of Goode’s work, but he was spot on as Ozymandias in Watchmen.

The Fox Searchlight production is set to debut sometime in 2012.
