[Editorial] A Note on the Current State of Horror Television to All Our Twelve Year Readers

This essay is a [now belated] Christmas present written for all you young bastards out there. First off, I know many of you aren’t actually bastards. I use the term as a sign of fake-tough guy affection. Because deep down, we are all fake tough guys. That’s why we watch horror films.

But maybe some of you are too young to watch horror films. Stupid mom won’t let you and you don’t have a dad (again, I understand that you probably have a dad). I used to be in your boat. My mom wouldn’t let me watch any horror films until I was about fourteen years old. While most kids pretended to get lost in the video store so they could ogle the porn room, I spent my video story visits pretending to be lost so I could stare at VHS box art in the horror section, which admittedly had its fair share of boobs, as well.

I had a serious horror film itch, and there were only two methods by which I could scratch it. One was to stay the night with friends, since most of them lacked mothers as lame and draconian as mine. Unfortunately, this rarely worked out. Most of my friends had no interest in horror films or had already seen them before too many times. I saw Halloween 4 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 by this method, but that’s about it.

Fortunately there was method two: Television. Granted, this wasn’t good for horror films but it worked wonders for horror itself because mom couldn’t monitor everything I watched. Plus, she figured if it was on TV, it had to be suitable for children. READ MORE

[BD Review] ‘Airborne’ Barely Gets Off The Ground

Reviewed by James A. Janisse

Airborne, an Image Entertainment production, premiered earlier this year at the British International Film Festival. It’s been getting billed as a horror film, but it’s more of a thriller or mystery, at least until the second half. The main drawing point seems to be Mark Hamill, though his role is confined to a subplot that never gets off the ground (zing!). The A-story follows a small group of passengers on a red eye flight in the middle of a huge Atlantic storm. Some passengers begin to disappear, others notice and freak out, and the whole thing escalates into a hijacking with a supernatural twist.

Airborne grabs you pretty quickly with its sleek and sexy style, and although you might think back to Final Destination as director Dominic Burns briefly checks-in with all the passengers before they board, it’s easy to just go along with it and enjoy the ride. The movie will seem familiar because it’s cliche, going so far as to include a menacing trumpet flair after a character announces a murder, but most of the time that doesn’t work against it. The characters, for instance, aren’t anything more than simple stereotypes – pompous old rich guy, wise-cracking military buddies, a young horny couple – but put those stereotypes on a small plane and make them panic and it’s still a lot of fun to watch.

An airplane is a great location for a film like this and unlike Wes Craven’s 2005 film Red Eye, Airborne never abandons the setting for safer ground. The whole thing feels claustrophobic and eerie, especially as the passengers slowly start to piece together that things aren’t right. One, a frequent flier, realizes that the plane is turning when it should be flying straight; another sees a spot of blood on the floor. There’s a sort of Twilight Zone feel to it all, and although it later adapts more slasher elements, picking off the passengers one-by-one, the movie always escalates nicely, raising the tension and excitement in tandem with the body count.

There are some things that feel pretty amateur. Most of the dialogue is just plain bad. Strangers open up to one another and share life stories, the hijackers comprehensively explain their motive and plan, and worst of all is when Julian Glover delivers a monologue over the plane speakers. When the film takes its disappointing supernatural turn, even that gets talked to death, the spirit onboard explained in full detail to the characters and audience. Combined with cheap-looking flashbacks that shade in murder scenes better left blank, it’s obvious that writer Paul Chronnell needs to learn more about “show, don’t tell”.

In case you’re wondering about Mark Hamill, the man does a good job with his role, though he’s nearly unrecognizable in both appearance and sound. That is, until he yells. As soon as he starts yelling you can hear Luke Skywalker all the way down. His character’s storyline, an air traffic controller on his last shift before retirement, is mostly just padding, sometimes getting put on hold long enough to be forgotten. It’s a bit of a shame, but like I said, he works with what he’s given and it’s definitely the stand-out performance of the film. Much better than fellow Star Wars cast member Julian Glover, whose awful lines are croaked out with an elderly rasp that comes off as cheesy.

Airborne has a promising take-off but never develops any substance. When it’s not being cliche, it’s not making sense, and it relies so much on its flashy style that it sometimes substitutes special effects for plot points. With a little more time in the writing phase, Airborne might have been a successful airplane thriller, but as it stands, it’s mostly a let-down.

Spindrift Going On Tour Of Western Ghost Towns

Spaghetti Western-influenced band Spindrift has announced the “Ghost Town Tour 2012″ in which they will be embarking on a series of live dates where they will be performing in ghost towns across the Western frontier. The band will be recording their live performances as part of a documentary for their upcoming album Songs Born Of The West, which they are currently recording in Joshua Tree, CA. The album has a Spring 2013 release. Tour dates for the shows are below.

Bodie, CA holds a special place for singer/guitarist Kirpatrick Thomas. He says “Bodie sprang up in the late 1880’s and was a mining town. There were so many miners in there that the town quickly became a thriving boomtown with over 65 saloons, opium dens and cat-houses. This was a place of life that went from bringing in 3 million dollars of revenue at its peak to being desolate by 1912.

The band has also scored the film Dust Up, which is directed by Ward Roberts and stars Amber Benson (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Supernatural). The soundtrack (iTunes) and film were both released Oct. 2nd. READ MORE

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] TV: Promo Art For “The Following,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” & “666 Park Avenue”

Via THR comes your first look at the promotional art for the new (and returning) television series “The Following,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “666 Park Avenue.”

Warner Bros. Television should have no trouble making a splash at Comic-Con. The studio — which is hosting 14 panels for shows including Fox’s “The Following,” CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” and “ABC’s 666 Park Avenue” — continues to have a bigger presence at the fan convention than anyone else on the TV front.

As part of the push, three WBTV properties — “Big Bang,” “Fringe” and “Supernatural” — will hold events in the 7,500-person Hall H, which traditionally has been reserved for film panels. “You’re starting to see TV take a different position at Comic-Con, one we didn’t see five to seven years ago,” says WBTV chief marketing officer Lisa Gregorian. “Go big or go home!

Another Supernatural ‘Entity’ Heads To An Asylum; Impressive Trailer, Stills & Poster Art

In the latest supernatural indie, thirty four unidentified bodies were found in shallow graves in a remote Siberian forest. No official explanation was ever discovered.

We’ve landed the first trailer, stills and awesome posters for Nexus DNA films LTD’s Entity, from Steve Stone, starring Dervla Kirwan, Charlotte Riley, Branko Tomovic, Oliver Jackson, Rupert Hill and David Worden. The footage makes me think we have another Tunnel on our hands – meaning, overhyped and we see nothing cool happen. I’m also fairly sick of seeing a ghost movie in an abandoned hospital/warehouse. Still, a good movie is a good movie and visually, Entity looks appealing.

1998: Thirty four unidentified bodies were found in shallow graves in a remote Siberian forest. Despite subsequent police investigations no official explanation was ever offered by the Russian authorities for these deaths. The case was closed three years later.

2010: A small English TV crew set out for the remote Russian forest. The Darkest Secrets TV programme revisits the sites of unsolved crimes. They employ the gifts of a psychic whose extraordinary powers may shed new light on this old mystery. The last communication to their production office in London stated that they were approaching the Siberian region where the bodies were found.

Nothing was heard from them again.

A Taste Of The Supernatural In Trailer For Period Horror ‘The Awakening’

After being acquired out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Cohen Media Group will release Nick Murphy’s incredibly weak The Awakening (review), starring Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton, on August 17. This morning the official theatrical trailer went live.

In the film, “Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence Cathcart is on a mission to expose all séances as exploitative shams. However, when she is called to a boys’ boarding school to investigate a case of the uncanny, she is gradually forced to confront her skepticism in the most terrifying way, shaking her scientific convictions and her sense of self to the very core. Haunting and moving in equal measure, The Awakening is a sophisticated psychological/supernatural thriller in the tradition of The Others and The Orphanage, but with its own unique and thrilling twist.

‘The Possession’ Official Poster Delivers Horror From The Inside!

On August 31 Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, what makes this supernatural horror so special is that it’s actually based on true events. Like, for real.

The story is based on a haunted box purchased on Ebay that brings bad fortune to its possessors (2004 LA Times articles). It was eventually passed from one person to the next and causing all sorts of torment. The real-life box gained notoriety in 2004 when it sold on eBay after causing inexplicable bad fortune to its owners which were attributed to a dibbuk – a malevolent spirit of Jewish folklore trapped in the haunted box. My own personal excitement comes in the fact that I followed a now-defunct website (pre-blogs yo!) that actually traced the box’s steps as it destroyed home after home. I recall all sorts of terrifying accounts that ranged from “bleeding eyes” to an old woman appearing in the owner’s houses.

The film starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport and Natasha Calis is said to be in the vein of The Exorcist or The Shining, based on real events that transpired after a family wound up in possession of a haunted box, setting off a harrowing struggle to rid themselves of the box’s evil curse. The exclusive poster premiere – which delivers in Lionsgate’s typical eye-catching fashion – reflects this with the tagline “Darkness lives inside.” It wants to come out… READ MORE

‘Splice’ & ‘Cube’ Director Begins Filming Abigail Breslin-’Haunter’

Toronto Principal photography on Vincenzo Natali‘s (Splice, Cube) new feature, Haunter, from Copperheart Entertainment, starring Abigail Breslin (Zombieland, Rango, Little Miss Sunshine), Stephen McHattie (300, Watchmen, Immortals, Pontypool), Peter Outerbridge (Silent Hill: Revelation, Lucky Number Slevin), Michelle Nolden (Red, Time Traveler’s Wife) and David Hewlett (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has begun.

In this reverse ghost story broke exclusively by Bloody Disgusting, “teenage Lisa (Breslin) and her family died in 1986 under sinister circumstances but remain trapped in their house, unable to move on. Lisa must reach out from beyond the grave to help her present-day, living counterpart, Olivia, avoid the same fate Lisa and her family suffered.

Haunter, directed by Vincenzo Natali from a screenplay written by Brian King (Cypher, Night Train), is produced by Steven Hoban (Splice, Ryan, Ginger Snaps trilogy), and co-produced by Mark Smith (388 Arletta Avenue, The Spine). Principal photography will run from April 16 until May 19, 2012 in Toronto and Brantford. Release is slated for 2013.

‘Haunter’ vividly demonstrates that even ghosts have a lot to be afraid of. Brian King’s script constructs a Borgian Labyrinth out of the most mundane settings and shows us how even in our everyday lives, we are spirits living in the material world,” said Natali.

Image Ent. Creepily Sends ‘Lovely Molly’ Baphomet Tablet To My House. I’m Hanging It Up. I’ll Regret It, I’m Sure.

Owning a massive website has its perks, but flaunting them to our readers doesn’t resonate well with me (humble bragging even pisses me off). But sometimes we do receive some pretty effin’ cool goodies that’s more than a thoughtless squeeze heart or a pen with the film’s logo on it. Occasionally, I stress occasionally, there’s a bit of thought put into the PR. Image Entertainment has gone to great lengths in promoting Lovely Molly, their forthcoming supernatural freak-fest opening in theaters May 18 (you guys better go, or else I’ll use the tablet on you!).

Anyways, this afternoon we received a pretty cool package that came rocking several photos that are extremely relevant to the plot of the Eduardo Sanchez-directed pic, along with an extremely unnerving (if you’re a pussy) Devilish stone plaque rocking horses and Satanic symbolism. Do I dare hang this in my apartment. Uhm, yes.

Docu-Style Video Feature: “‘Lovely Molly’ Path to Madness Part 1″

One of my personal favorite genre films out of the 2011 TIFF was Lovely Molly, The Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sanchez’s supernatural horror film that brings viewers face-to-face with the Devil.

Gearing up for the May 18 release via Image Entertainment, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive video series entitled Lovely Molly: Path to Madness.

In the new horror thriller Lovely Molly, Molly Reynolds (Gretchen Lodge) transforms from a happy newlywed to a person capable of unspeakable acts — this series explores the origins of Molly’s dark descent. In this episode — “Lovely Molly: Path to Madness Part 1″ — Molly’s turbulent history and the sins of her father are explored. The docu-styled video contains some footage from the movie.

When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession.

WomanLandscape10412 Hammer Films Haunted By Woman In Black Installment, Angels of Death

The team behind British horror hit The Woman In Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, are re-uniting to produce a follow-up, reports THR.

The revamped legendary British production label Hammer, Alliance Films and Cross Creek Pictures are to team up with novelist Susan Hill on the proposed story that will pick the tale up 40 years on.

The Woman in Black, directed by James Watkins has become the highest grossing British horror film of the past 20 years, grossing over $33 million in the U.K. and recently crossing the $120 million box office mark worldwide.

Screenwriter Jon Croker (Desert Dancer) is now developing the screenplay for the sequel, The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death, based on an original story by Hill, under development for the past few years and now complete.

‘The Woman in Black’ was set in the early 1900s and detailed the story of a young lawyer who is ordered to travel to a remote corner of the U.K. to sort out the papers of a recently deceased client. In the eerie setting of Eel Marsh House he discovers the vengeful ghost of the title.

The next installment, will pick the story up four decades later and focus on the concept of a couple and the experience they have when they encounter the haunted setting of Eel Marsh House.

It will be produced by Exclusive Media, Talisman, Cross Creek Pictures and Alliance Films, in addition to Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, who will serve as executive producer. READ MORE

TV: ABC Talks Canceling ‘The River,’ Transitioning To Netflix

river020312 TV: ABC Talks Canceling The River, Transitioning To Netflix

Is network TV dying? We may finally be witnesses to the rise of streaming original content.

Netflix, who is already developing Eli Roth’s original series “Hemlock Grove,” and is in talks with 20th Century Fox TV about possibly picking up recently cancelled “Terra Nova,” may also be eying another freshman drama that is facing cancellation: ABC’s “The River.”

Deadline reports that the streaming giant has had conversations with “The River” producer ABC Studios about the possibility of continuing the thriller/horror series on Netflix. Sources stress that the talks are exploratory at this point in the context of a larger conversation between ABC Studios and Netflix.

From my own perspective, this is exactly what “The River” should have been in the first place. The constant commercial breaks tear us away from any tension the show builds, while having it air on prime time forces the show to veer away from any violent content.

It should also b clear that, unlike “Terra Nova,” “The River” has not been officially canceled by ABC, though that is considered a foregone conclusion. This could actually turn into a positive situation if transitioned correctly.

Have you been watching “The River”? What do you think? READ MORE
