‘The Forest’ Is ‘The Descent’ Meets ‘Cannibal Holocaust’

Another horror game recently made its way onto Steam Greenlight, but this one isn’t quite like the rest. It’s an open world survival horror game that places you in a forest, alone, unarmed, and with a population of freaky pale cannibals that would very much like to eat you alive. You’ll need to learn how to start a fire, construct a shelter, and scavenge for food in order to survive. Even if you master that part, you’ll have to either hide from or defend against the forest’s hostile inhabitants. More after the jump, including a debut trailer.

5 Brutal Ways To Die In Horror Games!

A while back Lonnie, Bloody Disgusting’s resident comics guru, listed the 10 most brutal deaths in comics. This got me thinking about the myriad horrible ways I’ve died in video games over the years. Fast forward about a year and I’ve finally got around to listing the most brutal, gory and downright embarrassing ways I’ve died in horror games. There is obviously a very deep well to take from, but I believe I’ve found a pretty solid bunch of traumatizing deaths my increasingly fragile psyche has had to endure over the years.

Check out my picks — including videos, so you can re-live each death with me — after the break, and feel free to offer your own in the comments!

‘The Evil Within’ Will Bring Horror Back, Says Mikami

There’s no shortage of exciting horror games coming out over the next year or so, with one of the more highly anticipated titles being the freshly unveiled The Evil Within. We know a good deal about it, even though it’s still a ways off. We know it’s the first game by Tango Gameworks, helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. We know it’s coming to current and next-gen consoles sometime next year, courtesy of Bethesda, and that it sounds terrifying. More after the break.

Here’s Nearly 40 High-Res Images From That Creepy ‘The Evil Within’ Teaser

Shinji Mikami, one of the minds behind Resident Evil and Dino Crisis, unveiled his next game last week, a “pure” survival horror game titled The Evil Within. The live action teaser was definitely one of the more unsettling debuts I’ve seen for a horror game, though that’s unsurprising seeing as it’s the work of the extremely talented Kyle Cooper, who has worked on American Horror Story, The Walking Dead and Se7en. I decided to go through the teaser and capture nearly 40 screenshots from it, which you can enjoy in all their deeply unnerving glory after the break.

[Horror Declassified] A Look At Voice Acting

Welcome to Horror Declassified — here we’ll be examining mechanics, tropes and design philosophies that are common in the horror genre. Have something you’d like covered? Send us an email.

Written by Matthew Ritter, @matthewmritter

Back before CD tech was common voice acting in games was rare and gimmicky. A few lines here and there often with a strange sort of warble that made it sound like static more than human speech. The first game to feature such a cacophony was Stratovox with memorable phrases like “Help me!”. The old school voice I’ll always remember is the one from Berzerk, “The humanoid must not escape!” It worked well because it had robots that were shouting these things.

6 Upcoming Horror Games That Look Absolutely Terrifying

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this already, but this is an incredibly exciting time to be a horror fan. There are more new horror releases now than there’s ever been. We’ve seen multiple entries in franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, as well as a slew of quality indie horror games from devs like Frictional Games (Amnesia), Blue Isle (Slender: The Arrival), and Red Barrels (Outlast), among others. Perhaps what’s most exciting about this recent surge of popularity the genre’s seeing are the hints at where it’s headed next.

Five years ago action horror was the thing. As popular series like Resident Evil (RE4-5) and Silent Hill (Homecoming) strayed away from their survival horror roots and newcomers like Dead Space and Left 4 Dead saw great success, for a while it looked like the final nails were being hammered into the beloved subgenre’s coffin. Don’t get me wrong, action horror is still big now, but after the relative failures of Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3, I no longer see it becoming the norm. Between games like the six I have waiting for you after the break, it looks like survival horror is coming back, and this time it’s returning in a far more terrifying form.

Some Very Exciting ‘The Evil Within’ Details Trickle Out!

If you’re only just getting here, Shinji Mikami’s mystery survival horror project Zwei was officially revealed as The Evil Within. We’ve seen a particularly unsettling trailer and a batch of awesome screens, but actual details are scarce. We know it’s a survival horror game with action horror elements, loads of puzzles, an emphasis on item conservation, and that it’s coming to the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and next-gen consoles. It might also be the last game Mikami directs.

Thanks to a few savvy people on NeoGaf, we now know more about this game. Details after the break.

These ‘The Evil Within’ Screenshots Sure Are Freaky

Earlier this morning, Bethesda officially announced The Evil Within with a creepy live-action trailer, sans any gameplay. I’m not a fan of trailers that show nothing of the game they’re advertising, because even if the trailer is amazing it doesn’t accurately represent the game.

Thankfully, we’ve also been given a batch of deeply unsettling screenshots that show off what the game will actually look like. After looking through them, The Evil Within looks strikingly similar to Resident Evil 4, which Mikami helmed back when he was with Capcom. The camera, combat, even a few of the enemies and locations. Check them out after the break!

‘The Evil Within’ Trailer Revealed, Coming In 2014

A man makes barbed wire as a four-armed Witch from Left 4 Dead climbs out of a puddle of blood and a man with too much glass in his face stands there looking all creepy. That’s what you can expect from this debut trailer for The Evil Within — previously known as project Zwei.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,” said Mikami. “My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.” Watch its intensely creepy live-action debut trailer after the jump.

UPDATED: ‘Resident Evil’ Creator’s Mystery Survival Horror Project ‘Zwei’ Will Be Revealed Tomorrow

UPDATE: it’s been revealed!

The mystery game that Bethesda’s been teasing this week through a trio of bizarre videos — you can watch all of them after the jump — is actually Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s long silent survival horror game Zwei. Strangely enough, three of you have given me tips about the videos Bethesda’s been releasing, but I hadn’t gotten around to covering them because I am an epic failure (and I’m in the middle of a move).

IGN has the exclusive reveal, which will go live tomorrow, April 19, at 5:00 a.m. Pacific / 8:00 a.m Eastern. It’s about time!

6 Downsides To Being A Horror Gamer!

I’ve been a horror fan for most of my life. When my friends were doing whatever it is kids do outside, I was in my room exploring the foggy streets of Silent Hill, or being mercilessly picked on by SHODAN. The atmosphere, monsters, music — I instantly fell in love with it all. Over the years my love for this genre has grown, and so has the list of things I’ve grown to dislike about being a horror gamer.

I’ve compiled a short list of things that have soured my experience as a horror fan over the years, check them out after the break.

Watch Jenny And Allison Play The Wonderfully Strange Survival Horror Game ‘Rule Of Rose’

I hope you’re ready for an hour of old school survival horror and commentary, because Jenny and Allison of Backward Compatible are here to deliver both. I’ve never played Rule of Rose, but after watching this and seeing how delightfully bizarre the game is, I’m honestly a little bummed out I skipped it. If you missed out too, I highly recommend watching this video. The duo have some goofy fun with the game and Allison might get a little sloshed.

Darkwood

‘Darkwood’ Is An Indie Horror Game That’s Different Every Time You Play

I love indie developers because they’re not afraid to take risks and try new things. Darkwood is a good example of this for a few reasons. For starters, it’s an old school survival horror game that doesn’t hold your hand. This means there aren’t any tooltips or tutorials, so you’re forced to adapt as you play. It’s also one you play from the rarely used — at least in horror games — top-down perspective. Perhaps what’s most intriguing about it is it’s a roguelike, so every time you play the world is different, and when you die it’s game over.

Darkwood is still in the early stages of its development, but judging from the pre-alpha footage you can see after the jump, it looks to be shaping up quite nicely.

Sony Has Ended Production Of The PS2; Let’s Talk About The Console’s Best Horror Games!

With over 150 million sold, Sony’s PlayStation 2 is the most successful home gaming console of all time. It launched on March 4, 2000, and during the twelve years that followed it brought us video games that defined, or redefined, their respective genres. The PS2 also hosted the latter half of the golden era of the survival horror genre (late 90′s – early 00′s), which birthed amazing horror games like Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2, Half-Life, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, Siren, and so much more. For many horror fans, including myself, the PS2 was the console of choice for horror.

Some of my fondest gaming memories came from PS2 games, but like all good things, it’s come to an end. Let’s celebrate the end of such a stellar console by voting on the best horror games that released on it. More after the jump.

‘Catequesis’ Makes Me Nastalgic For Old School, 8-Bit Survival Horror

Most survival horror fans looks back at the late 90′s and early 2000′s for their favorite horror games. It’s understandable, since that was when Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame we’re all at their prime. I want to go back a little further. I didn’t get into real old school horror games (I’m talking about 8 and 16 bit) until a few years back. Strangely enough, these games ended up getting me deeply into indie horror, which eventually went full circle as several indie devs started creating games like Lone Survivor, Home, and Homesick (more on that last one later), which were all heavily inspired by the horror games of the late 80′s and early 90′s. Catequesis is an upcoming indie horror game that borrows from that era, and it looks amazing. More after the break.

Outlast

‘Outlast’ Aims To Bring Brains Back To Survival Horror

The horror genre isn’t exactly known for its excess of successful games. You have a select few, your Resident Evils and Dead Spaces, that manage to consistently sell well, but for the most part, it’s difficult to find success in this genre. That only makes brand new startup Red Barrels Games’ first project, a survival horror game called Outlast, all the more ambitious. Founded by industry veterans, including several of the minds behind Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, and Splinter Cell — at the very least we can take comfort in knowing this team knows what they’re doing.

Oh, and by brains, I don’t mean the brain-munching undead. When discussing their goals for Outlast, studio co-founder Philippe Morin said “There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them.” Enemies with brains? Color me intrigued. Head past the jump for our first look at the game in its freaky debut teaser.

A Video Game That Uses Sound As A Huge Aspect?! I’m All In!

Alright, this might be straddling the line between music and video games but dammit I want some fun too! And if Adam and TJ get upset, well I’ll just have to challenge them to a roshambo match (don’t tell them but I’m going to wear a cup).

So, on to the story. Whilst browsing through the vast awesomeness that is Kotaku, I happened across an article about a game entitled Candle, a stop-motion survival horror game that has some of the most interesting (and creepy) visuals I’ve seen in a long time. But what really grabbed me was one paragraph from the video description: “The gameplay of Candle focuses on exploring and listening. The audio centric game mechanics reward a careful and thoughtful player whilst punishing those with more rushed approaches.

WhatwhatWHAT?!?! That sounds AMAZING! The last game that I heard of that was based around audio was The City of Metronome, which is, for all intents and purposes, cancelled. So hearing that there is a game where the audio plays such an important and vital role to the core gameplay fills me with all sorts of happy. Check out the visually fascinating trailer below.

New Survival Horror Game ‘Black Death’ Announced

13 Days Of Horror, Day 13: This Is What I Want in Dead Space 2

It’s finally here. October 31st, better known as Halloween, is upon us and that means the 13 Days of Horror ends today. So before you go out and commit to all sorts of Halloween shenanigans I’d love it if you would stay for a minute to enjoy this proud finale to an incredibly fun series. This humble conclusion was birthed from my mind’s womb as a short second opinion on the Dead Space 2 multiplayer beta, but I soon realized I have a lot to say about the game so I thought to myself, why not turn it into another of my long-winded opinion pieces?

Day13 1 13 Days Of Horror, Day 13: This Is What I Want in Dead Space 2

It’s not perfect, and shouldn’t be seeing as this is an early build of the game but since I enjoy taking games apart and talking about what I feel could be improved upon so much I feel Dead Space 2 deserves a little poking and prodding as well. In this series I usually don’t talk about games we already know so much about and especially ones that are only a handful of months away. Dead Space 2 is easily my most anticipated game in a long time so if any of you sexy designers at Visceral Games are perusing this article, I hope you find the following gems of opinion tasty.
