[Awesome] Check Out This Goblin/Morricone-Inspired EP From Robotmonkeyarm

As I’ve said before, I love it when you lovely, amazing readers send me things to check out. I get to see and hear things that would’ve normally slipped entirely under my radar.

Such is the case with Robotmonkeyarm and their three-part EP that is heavily influenced by the works of Goblin (Suspiria) and Ennio Morricone (The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, John Carpenter’s The Thing). Utilizing and blending surf rock with rich instrumentation, the EP sounds like a wonderful throwback to the great horror movies of the 70′s and early 80′s.

The group has also mentioned via their Facebook page that they are working on a fourth entry into the EP series, so we’ll keep an ear open to make sure we let you know when it comes out. Meanwhile, listen to the trilogy below! READ MORE

[Random Cool] Groovy Blacklight ‘Suspiria’ Poster For Your Bedroom

Speaking of Suspiria, “Bang! Media” artist Jeremy Wheeler has created a groovy new blacklight poster for the film via the Silver Screen Society.

About “Witch” – “a blacklight silkscreen print made in conjunction with Silver Screen Society’s month of Suspiria art series. The hand-drawn pen-and-ink artwork portrays both the ominous and terrifying portions of the lm in equal measure, with added detail dedicated to the unique architecture featured in the lm. Measuring 18”x24,” the 3-color print was screened with a unique blacklight process developed through multiple projects by the artist and printing studio VG Kids. When put under UV light, the already vibrant red turns an electric pink/magenta, while the green remains intense under both.

5 Top Horror Final Girls!!!

By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).

There’s yet to be a Webster’s Dictionary entry for the term “Final Girl” but, as you all know, the Final Girl is typically the last female to survive. She doesn’t have to live, she just has to be the last one. She’s the girl who refuses to be just another victim and actively fights back against whatever force is killing off everyone she knows. I’d say that out of all possible female roles in a horror film, it’s the role of Final Girl that’s most coveted.

Even though there are quite a few actresses famous for being a Final Girl, I’d like to point out that there’s a difference between a Final Girl and a “Scream Queen.” A Scream Queen is an actress who has gained fame and notoriety for her frequent appearances in horror. I wanted to make sure to add the distinction between a Final Girl and a Scream Queen because – spoiler alert – Jamie Lee Curtis will not be found on this list. The entries here are women who have fought back against whatever it was that was after them in hopes of vanquishing their foes. Jamie Lee Curtis is generally considered a Final Girl for surviving her encounters with Michael Myers in the original Halloween, but other than poking her brother in the eye with a coat hanger, what did she actually do to survive the night? Run around? Hide in a closet? Had it not been for Dr. Loomis shooting Michael, Laurie would be dead. Similarly, Marilyn Burns from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre also won’t be found below, sinceStill here? Good! all she did was run through the woods for what seemed like hours after her captors tied some horrible knots.

Still here? Good! Head inside for my Top 5 Final Girls!!! READ MORE

David Gordon Green’s ‘Suspiria’ Remake Caught Up In Legal Woes

It feels like every year I’m posting some sort of update on the forthcoming Suspiria remake, which is being developed by Natalie Portman’s production company and director Davis Gordon Green. Orphan‘s Isabelle Fuhrman had even been attached to star!

Green, who is at Sundance promoting his pretty funny indie comedy Prince Avalanche, revealed to The Playlist that the project is stuck in a legal limbo it may never free itself from. “Suspiria is caught up in legal crap so who knows what will ever happen to that,” he explained. “That kind of falls into the ‘Confederacy Of Dunces’ category of ‘someday I’d like to make these movies’ that I was once attached to and worked on, but they may never happen.

This is a chance to cheer for those of you opposed to the redo of Dario Argento’s colorful 1977 masterpiece. Still, it would have been interesting to see what Green’s gaggle of witches would have been like.

Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt Describes Two New Songs For Next Album

In a recent interview with Uppsala Student Radio 98.9, Opeth mainman Mikael Akerfeldt briefly described two new songs that are being written for the followup to 2011′s Heritage (review). He says that the first song is rather miserable yet beautiful. But the real interesting part is that he describes the second track as being heavily influenced by Italian prog rock band Goblin, who scored many of Dario Argento’s films, including the fantastic Suspiria.

Akerfeldt stated, “I have one new song, which I really like, a new song. It’s the most miserable song I ever wrote, and it’s beautiful, I think. And then I have a song that we jammed, actually, on tour. I came up with a little lick and became a bit of a director and just told everyone to play this and that, and we started jamming on something. And it sounded, immediately from the beginning, which was also my idea, it sounded like the band Goblin, if you heard them, the Italian band. So it’s a crazy riff, a GOBLIN rip-off, and the song is called “Goblin”, which is a good title, I think. And we’re gonna record it. I’m not sure if that will be too much of a fucked up song to be on the record, because there will definitely only be one song ever we do that is gonna sound like that. So maybe it’ll just be some extra thing that we have. But it’s really good; I love it. But then again, it’s just because of the closeness to Goblin.

You can watch footage of Akerfeldt describing the music below. READ MORE

[Editorial] 9 Great Horror Soundtracks

It’s nearly Halloween. Outside, the wind is howling. The trees are bare, the branches looking like skeleton limbs crudely stuck together. Leaves cover the ground, causing each step to elicit a satisfying crunch. The sky is steel grey, threatening rain, thunder, and lightning. In a simpler way of putting it, it’s the best time of the year.

For me, one of the best ways to celebrate this time of year is by putting on some of the creepiest, eeriest, scariest music that I can get my hands on. There is something deliciously fun about scaring myself with shrieking violins, out-of-tune pianos, otherworldly choirs, and bizarre ambient tones.

And since this time of year is something special to a great many people, I wanted to share some of my favorite horror soundtracks, the ones that make me want to curl up under a blanket and play one horror movie after another, until the saving grace of the sunrise saves me. Join me below for 9 Great Horror Soundtracks! READ MORE

[Random Cool] See “The Bambi Burster” From ‘Alien 3′, Olympic Swimmers Perform To Goblin!

One of the coolest things to happen at this years Olympics is the performance by Natalia Ischenko (with 15 world titles, nicknamed ‘Phelps in a skirt’) and Svetlana Romashina, the best Synchronised Swimming Duet Team (swimming for Russia) performing in the Free Routine to “Suspiria” by Goblin, at Aquatic Centre, Olympic Park, London, on April 20 2012! Dig on that above.

Another video addition to this edition of Random Cool comes once again courtesy of studioADI. The FX studio has shared the puppet work for the “Bambi Burster” in David Fincher’s Alien 3. Here’s what they had to say about the following video: “For Fincher’s ALIEN 3, we created the “Bambi Burster”. Though cut from the film, this video shows a test of the unfinished rod puppet.

Crowded around it are ADI co-founder and multi-Oscar nominee Alec Gillis, future WETA dignitary Gino Acevedo, future Oscar winners Dave Elsey and Mark Coulier, and future video demi-god Chris Cunningham. The puppet was sculpted by future director Steve Norrington (BLADE, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN). [Awesome] Check Out This Beautifully Retro Horror-Inspired Music Video

Sometimes a music video goes for a horror vibe and falls flat on its face. But sometimes you get a video that just nails everything it’s going for and I can’t help but smile as my beloved genre gets the proper treatment. Such is the case with the music video for Jjamz “Heartbeat”, which is directed by Eddie O’Keefe. The video has the look and feel of Halloween, a figure known as “The Shape” that reminds me of a cross between Phantasm’s The Tall Man and Poltergeist’s Henry Kane, and visual color play like Argento’s Suspiria. All of these attributes are delightfully offset by a surprisingly catchy and chipper song. Check out the awesome video below and download the song for free here. READ MORE

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). ‘Suspiria’ Remake In Full-On Casting Mode, Adds Additional Names

7suspiria 30406 1024x428 Suspiria Remake In Full On Casting Mode, Adds Additional Names

Yesterday we reported that Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan, The Hunger Games) had been cast in David Gordon Green’s Suspiria. The film, a remake of Dario Argento’s classic, is clearly gearing up in a big way and has added several other names to the cast.

Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher, I Heart Huckabees), two-time Academy Award-nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs; The Woman in Black), Michael Nyqvist (MI:4 Ghost Protocol; Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Antje Traue (Superman: Man of Steel) have joined the cast. Clearly we’re talking about a movie with a higher pedigree than The Sitter. It’s important to remember that Green is a supremely talented guy who doesn’t just make stoner comedies.

Argento’s 1977 horror pic followed Suzie, a young girl who travels to Europe to attend a world-renowned school, only to learn that the academy is a front for a coven of witches.

Green is directing from a script he co-wrote with Chris Gebert. Crime Scene Pictures principals Adam Ripp and Rob Paris are producing with Francesco Melzi d’Eril of Memo Films and I Am Love helmer Luca Guadagnino of First Sun.

Production will start in September.

Creepy ‘Orphan’ Girl Lands Lead In ‘Suspiria’ Redo

As I continue to try and get Dario Argento’s classic on Blu-ray (why is it so hard?!), Isabelle Fuhrman (pictured inside), who parlayed her starring turn in Orphan into a key supporting role in The Hunger Games, has landed the lead in David Gordon Green’s remake of Suspiria, says Variety.

David Gordon Green Determined To Remake ‘Suspiria’, Production Slated For September.

The remake to Dario Argento’s classic 1977 thriller Suspiria just won’t die.

Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green is now working from a script he wrote with Chris Gebert, with the search now on for Suzie, the young protagonist who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a series of brutal murders, the young American student learns that the academy is a front for something way more sinister than education. The original had a surreal, psychedelic tone that involved the supernatural, witches and a whole lotta blood.

The fresh news comes via Deadline who reports that the remake is backed by Crime Scene Pictures, whose partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris are joining forces with producers Francesco Melzi d’Eril (Hotel Rwanda) from Memo Films and Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) under his First Sun film banner to produce and finance the remake. Rizal Risjad, Silvia Fendi and Philip Elway will executive produce and Lisa Muskat will co-produce. Wild Bunchwill sell foreign at Cannes in May and CAA will make the domestic distribution deal. Production begins in September.

We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film,” Crime Scene partners Ripp and Paris said in a statement.

‘Suspiria’ Remake Getting Closer?!

Suspiria120811 Suspiria Remake Getting Closer?!

Natalie Portman’s prominent role in Black Swan might have scuttled plans for her to appear in director David Gordon Green’s remake of Dario Argento’s colorful Suspiria since both films offer (to varying degrees) horrific takes on the world of ballet. One also had to wonder if that film in general had hurt Suspiria‘s chances of going behind the camera.

Not so, apparently.

When asked if Black Swan had thrown a wrench in his plans, Green told Coming Soon, “No, that adds to it. That means there’s an audience for prestige in genre, and to me, that’s exciting. We’re really close to getting that movie made if I can get over a couple more budgetary hurdles I think I can pull it off. My version doesn’t really have any similarities to “Black Swan,” but it proves to the marketplace that you can take a great risk and you can have something that has great artistic ambition, but also has incredible commercial appeal.

Now that Green has finished up his studio-comedy triptych with The Sitter I’m curious to see what he could do with this (or any other) property.

Head over to CS for the full interview. READ MORE

‘Suspiria’ Redo Scores Goblin

Just yesterday director David Gordon Green revealed that he quite possibly could shoot his remake to Dario Argento’s colorful Suspiria next. Other info now known is that he’ll probably cast unknowns, with Natalie Portman opting to do Black Swan instead. Now, he tells Movieline that it will “sound” right.

We got the rights to the Goblin score, so we’re going to use that. Steve Jablonsky, who did the score for ‘Your Highness,’ is incredible. So I would love to see what he would do with the Goblin music. We could start in a very faithful, synthesizer kind of world of music that Goblin does in the original film, and by the end of it turn that score into a huge opera, which would be incredible.

In the original ’77 flick, a newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.

David Gordon Green’s ‘Suspiria’ Could Be Next!

Out promoting Your Highness, director David Gordon Green told Indiewire that next on his agenda could be the long-gestured remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria.

I’m hopefully going to get into a horror film, [`Suspiria'] next. That’s the goal,” Green said about lining up the remake of the Dario Argento psych-horror classic as his next feature. “It’s an idea that came to me three years ago…That was an enlightening process. [Our `Suspiria'] doesn’t follow the trend of the traditional horror movies of late, so it’s a leap of faith, financially.” He also says that there won’t be many key differences, stating, “It’s actually very faithful. I’m gonna put my spin on it, but in terms of a pitch, it’s going to remain quite faithful to [the original].

Natalie Portman was once in talks, but (smartly) opted to do Black Swan instead. The new cast will be unknowns: “I want an unknown cast…My version isn’t necessarily about ballet, it’s more of an all-girls boarding school… I don’t think it will have names.

In the original ’77 flick, a newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.

Album Review: Xander Harris ‘Urban Gothic’

Often times, musicians say that they are inspired by something they see or some event that shapes them. It’s not often, however, that a musician says that their main source of inspiration is a book. Such is the case with Xander Harris’ ‘Urban Gothic’, which is meant to be a companion piece to the Brian Keene book of the same name, played in the background while you read the book. So does it work? Does Xander Harris’ ‘Urban Gothic’ work or does it hinder the reading experience? Check out after the jump.

Suspiria

A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature. Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organisation.
