[TV Bites] “Cult” Pulled From Schedule, Say Hello To SyFy’s Jamie Foxx Horror Anthology

CW’s “Cult,” which premiered on February 19th, has been pulled from the network’s schedule. Per THR, “The freshman dud starring The Vampire Diaries’ alum Matt Davis has been completely removed from the network’s schedule, according to program listings The CW released Wednesday.

While it doesn’t look good for the series, there’s always the possibility that the remaining episodes could be shown “on other platforms.” So maybe On Demand or iTunes? They weren’t clear.

In more positive news, the SyFy Channel has announced a new horror anthology series from Jamie Foxx. Yep. And he’s going to write, produce and direct 5 episodes of it. It doesn’t have a title yet, so I’m just going to call it the Untitled Jamie Foxx Horror Anthology Series for now. Per Deadline, it will be in the vein of “Tales From The Crypt” and “The Twilight Zone” and will be exec produced by Troy Miller “Flight Of The Conchords”.

What’s Your Favorite Line From This New Trailer For ‘Piranhaconda’?

Piranhaconda Header 51712 Whats Your Favorite Line From This New Trailer For Piranhaconda?

I think my favorite line is, “I can’t believe you just said that!

Last week we brought you the sales trailer for Chopping Mall director Jim Wynorski’s kinda trashy looking Piranhaconda. Now, not only is there another trailer – it also has an air date on the Syfy! American World Pictures will release the film with the tagline “Part Snake! Part Fish! All Killer!” on the Syfy June 16th at 9/8 Central.

The film stars Michael Madsen (Kill Bill), Rachel Hunter and Shandi Finnessey and is about “a low-budget horror movie crew, inept kidnappers, and a reptile expert all on the smorgasbord for a ravenous anaconda/piranha hybrid slithering loose in Hawaii.

Head inside for the trailer, and let me know your favorite line in the comments. READ MORE

TV: Syfy Adding Horror-Themed Reality Shows To Development Slate

We’ll have to see how all of this plays out, but a couple of these sound like they could be pretty cool. I figure we can do a mini-report on them now and then just drop it if they turn out to be super lame.

Variety is doing some preliminary reporting on Syfy’s development slate which is set to be announced later tonight its upfront presentation. A couple of ones that sound like they might have potential are “Stranded”, where a family or group of friends moves into a supposed haunted location, self-documenting their experience in total isolation. “Buyer Beware” follows sellers who try to unload their haunted houses. “Deadfinder” revolves around mediums who help solve cold murder cases. “Ghost Town USA” examines reports of supernatural activity in Mount Holly, N.J.

If any of these get off the ground, which would you be the most interested in?

[DVD Review] ‘Ghost Hunters International: Season Two, Part One’

In 2008, SyFy show Ghost Hunters went international. Longtime “hosts” Jay and Grant left the franchise in the hands of Rob Demarest, an old time friend. In 2010, Demarest was let go from the franchise – but not before putting in two solid seasons. One night on Facebook, Demarest went down in a blaze of glory – ranting about his firing. In this explosive episode, he went off the deep end, solidifying Syfy’s decision to not have him return to the show – going as far as to insult fans (I was lucky enough to be called “dumbie” – yes, that was the spelling). Even still, Ghost Hunters International is by far the most intriguing of the series. READ MORE

LeprechaunSyfyLand22712 TV: Trailer For Leprechauns Revenge Keeps Leprechaun Mainly Hidden

The trailer for the Drew Daywalt directed Leprechaun’s Revenge is here, and it actually looks kinda fun in a really goofy way. You only get a few creature shots here and there in this piece, but it readily shows off its ensemble and SyFy charm.

TV: Another Revisionist Take On Hansel & Gretel, ‘Witchslayer Gretl’, Gets A Teaser

Gretel21412 TV: Another Revisionist Take On Hansel & Gretel, Witchslayer Gretl, Gets A Teaser

Originally scheduled for November, and originally titled Gretl, Witchslayer Gretl is now set to debut on the Syfy Channel February 25th at 9/8C. I’m sure the genesis of the project has nothing to do with the high profile Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters (starring Jeremy Renner) that recently got bumped to next year. There’s also Black Forest: Hansel And Gretel & The 420 Witch coming out this year. For my sanity’s sake, let’s cap it at three for now, okay?

In the Syfy version starring Shannen Doherty, “As an adult, a witch hunter (Hansel) returns to the village where he lived as a child to find and kill the witch who killed his sister, Gretl (Doherty), only to find that Gretl is not dead and danger lurks around every corner.

John Boylan, Sarain Boylan and Jefferson Brown, round out the cast with Erica Cox, Marianthi Evans, Sophia Ewaniuk, Nahanni Johnstone, and Daniela Lazzaro.

Carny (V)

When’s the last time you’ve watched a Lou Diamond Phillips movie? Check out Carny when it next passes by on DVD, or plays the SyFy Channel again. You’ve seen worse monster movies. The surprising payoff here is body parts galore.

Lou plays a Sheriff, in charge of protecting his two horse town from a traveling carnival that has pitched tent in his neck of the woods – when he picks up on the fact that they plan on showing a creature that may be the devil himself. Whats happened is that the carnival owner has gotten his hands on a real freak of nature. A beast in a cage that is thirsty for human blood.

This film may impress you more than you expect, with the acting attempts being serious and dramatically driven – not played with and delivered with tongue in cheek one liners. BUT – don’t put that tongue away. You’re going to need it when they show the creature. Carny worked very well and above average up until they showed the monster in the cage – the Jersey Devil – a Gozer looking, gargoyle like, bad CGI creature that just takes you right out of any reality or tension that was building. If you’re familiar with that SyFy trope going in, there’s not much else more to gripe about.

The good thing – the gore. You will be surprised how much blood and injury gets shown. The “devil” gets loose and runs around town slaughtering innocent victims, and the remnants it leaves behind are disgusting. Severed limbs galore, and heads with hallowed, eaten out faces are spread out about the film well enough to keep you flowing for 85 minutes without boredom. Its really not bad, if you’re in the mood to accept a SyFy style horror film that earns its R, graphic-violence style.

However – like no other movie Ive seen before, this movie drops an entire skull the last second of the tale. Unless I got an incomplete copy? With chaos ensuing, and the town being blown up to shit and bodies lying around everywhere, Sheriff Atlas (Phillips) and the carnival seer Samara (Simone-Elise Gerard) are getting up from the ground, as the Jersey Devil rises behind them onto a car roof, ready to pounce! Our survivors turn, see it, and yell, “RUN!” – as if right in the midst of a heightened climax that is usually called the last act. Fuck that. Our characters split up, the Jersey Devil prepares to attack, and – that’s it. Its one of the most WTF endings Ive ever seen. Its like the copy I watched was edited and the last 5 minutes of the film were cut off. Talk about deflating the balloon. Its still worth a night’s viewing. The acting was over dramatic (which is better than “I cant scare you, so I’m gonna act silly and be a comedy like I’m not trying”), and the gore was its saving grace. Ill dry swallow and say, (dare I…) this one’s a pretty cool go.

Carny (V)

A traveling carnival unleashes terror in a small Nebraska town when the main attraction manages to break free, and embarks on a carnivorous rampage across the countryside. The locals paid good money to see the abomination known as the Jersey Devil. When the creature escapes, however, their curiosity quickly turns to terror. As local sheriff Sam Atlas (Lou Diamond Phillips) rounds up a posse to track the vicious man-eater, the town pastor hatches his own plan for killing the monster that tore his son to shreds.
