[Remember This?] “Werewolf” The TV Series!!!

“The Walking Dead”, “Dexter”, “American Horror Story”, “True Blood”. Horror is almost more popular on TV these days than it is in cinemas. There’s something about the small screen that seems to “legitimize” the genre for casual viewers. Maybe it’s an ingrained expectation that television’s historically strict standards and practices will save them from the nasty bits (which is of course no longer true in the days of HBO and AMC), or perhaps it’s just the simple equation that smaller screen = less scary.

My mom had to be a subscriber to at least one of these theories because she let me watch “Werewolf” at an exceedingly young age. I can even remember her enabling my efforts to get from where I was to where I needed to be to watch it. I had to see it. The funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I was sort of bored by it – I only really remember getting excited when the wolf was onscreen, which wasn’t very often. But I was so addled by my love of An American Werewolf In London that, if it had werewolves in it, I was glued to the screen.

The show ran for 28 episodes on Fox from 1987-1988. I was too young to retain any real specifics, but the internet tells me that it was similar to “The Fugitive” in structure – so it has that going for it! If nothing else, the werewolf design is actually decent.

Groan Of The Day: MTV Comics Releases A Bland 5 Page ‘Teen Wolf’ Preview

I know that for most of you the following preview is probably as useful to you as watching even one minute of MTV’s “JERSEY SHORE”, but from what we have heard the chances of catching a sexually transmitted disease from Snooki are far lower. Science aside, beyond the break you can check out a 5 page preview of issue #2 of “TEEN WOLF”. Read on for the skinny…

News Bites: Diablo Cody Pens ‘Evil Dead,’ ‘Underworld’s ‘Awakening,’ ‘Undocumented’ Acquired & ‘Elysium’ Becomes ‘Baja Dunes’

I spent the afternoon getting treatment for my horrible, horrible TMJ (sympathy, please) so in an attempt to catch up on the news briefs, here’s a special edition of News Bites:

As previously mentioned, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) is currently rewriting Federico Alvarez’s recent draft of The Evil Dead, which Alvarez will direct some time in 2012.

IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to director Chris Peckover’s feature debut Undocumented, a truly dark thriller that’s heavy on the politcs and light on the horror, reports Variety. It’s a prety great film that premiered at Fantastic Fest last year. Peckover wrote the script with Joe Peterson. Scott Mechlowicz, Alona Tal, Yancey Arias, Greg Serano and Kevin Weisman star. It “centers on a group of documentary filmmakers chronicling the trials and inequities faced by Mexican illegal immigrants. When they join a group of families illegally crossing the border to record the experience firsthand, their truck is pulled over and detained — and what happens next plunges their group into unimaginable horror.

MTV has renewed “Teen Wolf” for a second season of 12 episodes to air in 2012, reports Variety. “Teen Wolf” premiered June 5 and through its seven episodes has been MTV’s highest-rated new series of the past two years in the 12-34 demo, averaging 1.7 million overall viewers. The series has been TV’s No. 4 show among auds 12-34.

A recent issue of Production Weekly claims that Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is now titled Baja Dunes, although, as Latino Review smartly assesses, could be a title cover up for production purposes. The story revolves around aliens doing battle with humans on Earth. The film’s cast already includes Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Wagner Moura and Diego Luna. It’ll arirve in theaters March 1, 2013 from Sony.

Speaking of title changes, Sony Screen Gems has decided on Underworld Awakening for Selene’s fourth battle with the Lycans. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, and starring Kate Beckinsale, India Eisley and Michael Ealy, Screen Gems will continue the tradition of a New Year’s release on January 20, 2012.

Lastly, Warners The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander, will arrive in theaters February 15, 2013. An exorcism tale on Valentine’s Day? Aces! Sergei Bodrov directed the big screen adaptation of “The Last Apprentice.”

TV: ‘Teen Wolf’ Clip Shows Scott Wolfing Out

A new scene from MTV’s Teen Wolf series made its way online today, featuring Scott (Tyler Posey) trying to get laid and failing miserably at it. He’s at that age where his hormones are racing, so I feel bad for him but at least he still has masturbation. I mean, his palms can’t get any hairier…

What really caught me by surprise is that a cover of ‘Tonight, Tonight’ by Passion Pit plays over the clip. The song, originally performed by The Smashing Pumpkins, is easily one of my favorite songs of all time (and definitely one of the best music videos ever).

New ‘Teen Wolf’ TV Promo Makes Me Even More Apathetic

If the full trailer for MTV’s Teen Wolf series made you cringe, then this one is guaranteed to put you to sleep. Granted, it doesn’t show much, save for Tyler Posey (in the Michael J. Fox role) staring around the forest bewildered after a transformation, but would it kill them to throw some van surfing in there?!?

The original used Scott’s transformations as a metaphor for puberty, but this time around it’s being used as a springboard for a giant (read: they hope audiences will think it’s elaborate, but it probably won’t be) mystery rooted in the town’s secrets. I commend them for taking the remake/reboot/whatever the hell this thing turns out being in a radically different direction, but I wish they would’ve used something better as an obvious inspiration (one of the fight scenes in the full trailer looks like it was ripped right out of Twilight‘s finale, same lighting and everything).

Looks like Russell Mulcahy directed six of the upcoming season’s twelve episodes, including the pilot. My my, how far he has fallen since Razorback and Highlander… The series is set to premiere on June 5, following the MTV Movie Awards.

TV: New ‘Teen Wolf’ Trailer Just As Embarassing

I truly, honestly don’t understand “remaking” something if you’re going to completely butcher it tonally. For example, it’s OK if you take George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and then let Zack Snyder put his own spin on it, but why would you do something drastically different if you’re attempting to appeal to the fans of the original?

MTV is gearing up for their premiere of “Teen Wolf” on June 5, their dead-serious, Twilight-esque, ridiculously trite version of the ’80s coming-of-age comedy starring Michael J. Fox as a lovable teen who becomes wolf after puberty.

While we’ve already chastised the leaked trailer late last year, this evening brings the “official promo” rocking all sorts of embarrassing footage. I guess Lacrosse is cooler than basketball? Hellz no!

TV: ‘Teen Wolf’ Premieres Following MTV Movie Awards

After the horrid, horrid, HORRID teaser trailer (you can watch it inside), I’d say my level of excitement for MTV’s “Teen Wolf” TV series is at code red levels. Completely destroying the original film’s mythology, you’ll be able to see this rehash on TV Sunday, June 5, following the always hilarious MTV Movie Awards.

Russell Mulcahy directed the pilot episode of this redo of the incredible 1980′s coming-of-age horror comedy flick starring Michael J. Fox.

The series is based around a young outsider named Scott McCall, who one night wanders around the woods in search of a dead body and is attacked by a werewolf. He escapes the attack with only a bite to his side, but starts to notice some changes in himself.

TV: I Lift My Leg and Piss on the ‘Teen Wolf’ Teaser Trailer

MTV released the first ever teaser trailer for their forthcoming “Teen Wolf” TV series that’s a series redo of the incredible 1980′s coming-of-age horror flick starring Michael J. Fox. While MTV has done a pretty good job with their made-for-TV movies, I’m absolutely appalled by this teaser trailer that I’d love to piss all over. It features horrid exposition (“…you mean you! You did this to me!“), a complete destruction of the original film’s mythology (the lead isn’t born a werewolf, hence removing the “coming-of-age” underplot of the feature that made it so compelling and relatable), a gross Twilight production value, while even lamer the lead plays lacrosse (WTF lame) instead of basketball. The only thing it has going for it is that the effects appear to be practical and it reminds me vaguely of Ginger Snaps. I’ll give it a go, but I cant say I’m not disappointed already with what Russell Mulcahy (Razorback, Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction) has placed in front of me. What say you?
