Have Some New Toilet Reading Material With ‘The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists’

For all you metalheads who have been desperately wanting some new reading material while you do your holy business on your porcelain throne, authors Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins may very well have provided you with your next big thing: The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists! This book is a compendium of dozens of factual, random and often outrageous lists that celebrate the best and the worst aspects of metal.

Contributions come from such authority figures as Scott Ian (Anthrax), Gary Holt (Exodus), Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly), Danny Lilker (Nuclear Assault/Brutal Truth), Katon W.DePena (Hirax), and many others. There will also be lists from Metal Blade CEO Brian Slagel, Eddie Trunk, Monte Conner, and many more.

Per the official press release: “You want to know about album covers that feature goats on them? What Motorhead icon Lemmy’s warts might tell you if they could speak? The achievements Iron Maiden would never have reached had their original vocalist Paul Dianno remained in the band?

The book can be pre-ordered here. READ MORE

Testament Announce N. American Headlining Tour

Bay Area thrash metal band Testament has announced an early 2013 headlining tour through much of N. America. Support will be coming from Overkill, Flotsam And Jetsam, and Australian band 4Arm.

It’s a thrill to announce our upcoming dates with Overkill and Flotsam And Jetsam,” commented guitarist Alex Skolnick. “It’s a tour that brings together three different metal bands from three different regions: West Coast, East Coast and Southwest. All three bands sound very different from one another yet are highly compatible. All have been around the block (and the world) a few times and all have managed to keep a sound that feels current. This tour will be a ‘must see’ for fans who remember the early days of thrash/speed metal as well as those whose age is younger than the genre itself.

The band is also making a VIP package available that includes a great deal of swag and a chance to win a Eric Peterson signature Dean guitar signed by the band. Check out all the tour dates and VIP package details below. READ MORE

[Tips & Tricks] How To Peel Off A CD Security Sticker With Ease

Alright, so starting today, I figure that every once in a while I’ll record a video of me doing something that I think makes a difficult task just a bit easier. This isn’t going to be a scheduled series or anything like that. This is just going to be one of those situations where something pops into my head and I figure, “You know what? I want to share this with the readers so that their life is made better.”

To kick things off, I wanted to show you a trick that I learned on how to remove those really pesky stickers that are on the top of CD jewel cases. Check out this video below to see me open up Testament‘s Dark Roots Of Earth the irritating way and then Born Of OsirisThe Discovery MY way. Hope you enjoy! READ MORE

Anthrax Discusses ‘Among The Living’ With Google Play

Anthrax caught up with Google Play to put together an audiobiography telling the story of their 1986 Gold-certified album Among The Living. Guitarist Scott Ian and singer Joey Belladonna went over the history of the album, from the recording process with famed producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix) to mixing in the Bahamas and the sold-out tour that followed the release. It’s a pretty damn cool interview and well worth checking out here.

Among The Living came out during what might be considered the best year in thrash metal history. Metallica‘s Master Of Puppets, Slayer‘s Reign In Blood, and Megadeth‘s Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying were all released that year.

Anthrax will be hitting the road to co-headline the third leg of the Anthrax/Testament/Death Angel tour. All dates can be seen below. READ MORE

The Infamous Pyramid Sound Studios Faces Possible Demolition

Located in Ithaca, New York, Pyramid Sound Studios was founded by Alex Perialas in 1974. In the 80′s, this studio was responsible for recording artists such as Bad Religion, Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, Agnostic Front, and many more. Not only catering to national acts, the studio also recorded many local artists, solidifying its place as a staple of the local music scene. Now this studio faces possible condemnation in the face of renovations being one to the Clinton St. Bridge. Local officials have their hands tied as, legally, bridge renovation is a federally funded endeavor.

Perialas states, “This is one of those things that is a state and city project where they’re replacing a 70-year-old bridge and its right in our footprint, if you will. With the building of this new bridge, there’s a chance that if they aren’t careful, they could do damage to the studio. I’m currently working with the administration to land on an amicable solution to the situation. This has been a landmark facility for years. We pretty much created a style of music here that people had never heard of before. It would be a shame to lose such an integral part of music history due to this temporary construction.”

Perialas has put together an online petition that can be signed here. READ MORE

Brendon Small’s Galaktikon Streams First New Song

galaktikoncover Brendon Smalls Galaktikon Streams First New Song
Coinciding with season 4 of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, April will see the release of Dethklok creator Brendon Small’s Galaktikon. Described as “high stakes intergalactic extreme rock”, the album seems to be something that Dethklok fans can definitely get into but is also diverse enough to attract new crowds and listeners.
Today, Crave Online got a stream of one of the tracks entitled On My Way. My only complaint is that the first thing I noticed was how boxed the audio file was. There were no dynamics to be found anywhere. The song kicks in and the volume never changes once. Am I right? Am I wrong? You can hear the song below and give me your thoughts.

Dethklok’s Brendon Small Presents Galaktikon

Brendon Small, the mastermind behind Dethklok, the band on Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, has announced the upcoming release of his side project Galaktikon. The album will come out this April and coincides with the Season 4 premiere of Metalocalypse.
“This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end,” states Brendon Small.

Brendon Small paired with Dethklok drummer (legendary metal drummer) Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory) and Dethklok bassist Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) as well as Dethklok engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild.

Check below for the awesome, retro sci-fi album artwork.

Anthrax/Testament To Headline US Tour

Anthrax and Testament will be embarking on a full US tour later this fall with Death Angel as a direct opener. The tour begins in mid-October and concludes one month later in mid-November. Anthrax will be closing out each show on the tour, which coincidentally falls almost exactly 20 years after Anthrax and Testament first toured together.

“We’ve been tight with the guys in Testament for a long, long time,” said Anthrax’s Charlie Benante.  ”so we’re really looking forward to hanging out with them on the road.  And all of us in Anthrax are big Death Angel fans, so this is going to be a monster of a good time – for all of us and for the fans.  Plus, with the incredible success of The Big Four shows over the last year, we wanted to tour with some of the ‘second wave’ of thrash bands.”

Alex Skolnick Trio Releasing ‘Veritas’

Alex Skolnick, guitarist of Testament, will be releasing ‘Veritas’, his fourth studio album with his other project, The Alex Skolnick Trio. The jazz album is due for release on March 29th and will have nine original compositions, a cover of Metallica’s ‘Fade To Black’ and a bonus remix of ‘Bollywood Jam’. I ran into Alex for a brief moment at the American Carnage Tour and he was one cool guy. Plus, he plays guitars that are made only a couple of hours from my home (Heritage Guitars), so he’s a winner in my book.
