[Blu-ray Review] ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Feels a bit Undercooked

Reviewed by Michael Erb

You’ve got to admit that Leatherface and his franchise have some serious longevity. They’ve survived four movies in the original series, two in the Platinum Dunes reboot franchise, and now they’re back in the newest reboot (and 7th total) movie. After this many films and just as many creative teams bleeding it for money, you might expect Texas Chainsaw (aka Texas Chainsaw 3D) to feel a bit undercooked. You’d be right. READ MORE

UPDATE: ‘Texas Chainsaw 4′ NOT Moving Ahead With “Hannah Montana” Star

Update: Sounds like BBC Radio got some bad info. I just spoke with Christa Campbell (an executive producer on Texas Chainsaw 3D) who clarified that there can be no casting because there is “no script.” It actually sounds like this sequel is fairly far off since the rights are split 50/50 between Millenium and Mazzocone and there is not yet a consensus on how to proceed. No direction has been chosen for the sequel.

January’s Texas Chainsaw 3D (review) performed well enough to get a sequel, and there seemed to be some momentum behind Texas Chainsaw 4 (I’m sure the title will be explained at some point) when Millenium announced the sequel. The very next day the brakes were lightly applied to the claim that it would be shooting this summer in Louisiana when producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producer Mark Burg declared they needed a beat to figure out the logistics.

Have those logistics been resolved? Right now we’re putting this out there as strictly a rumor but a BD Reader exclusively writes in that an announcement was made on BBC Youth Radio in regard to Texas Chainsaw 4. Apparently Alexandra Daddario and Dan Yeager are reprising their roles and ex-Disney star Cody Linley (pictured below; “Hannah Montana”) and British newcomer Tommy Hatto will have major roles. Per our reader, “They said that because of the success of Texas 3D’s twist, the new movie will have a twist with a male protagonist.

We’ll update you when we know more. READ MORE

‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Dated For Home Video, Includes Commentary From Tobe Hooper

Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D arrives on 3D/2D Blu-ray Disc (plus Digital Copy and Ultraviolet), DVD (plus Digital Copy and Ultraviolet), Video on Demand and Pay-Per-View on May 14th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. In addition, there will be an early digital window on April 30th.

The slasher was directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star. It’s been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.

“Texas Chainsaw 3D picks up decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre seen in Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In it, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.

[Box Office] ‘Mama’ Has HUGE Opening Weekend! Horror Reigns Again!

Universal released Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister, on Friday and it cleaned up over the weekend. A $10 Million Friday translated into an estimated $28.1 Million dollar weekend ($33.2 if the 4-Day projections hold for the MLK Holiday). That’s a lot of money!

Even if I didn’t totally love the movie (nor did Brad, you can read his review here), there’s plenty to admire about it, particularly the fact that its story is pretty original. And that $33 Million more than doubles its $15M production budget. It had a not great B- cinemascore, but exit polling revealed that audiences liked it more than Texas Chainsaw 3D so expect it to not drop like a rock like that one did.

Now if we can only get this many people to hit the theaters for Evil Dead in April and You’re Next in August!

Amazing Unused Designs For ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Show An Elderly Leatherface!!

I’d love to see something like this in the sequel to Texas Chainsaw 3D (review). Geek Tyrant got their hands on some great, unused concept art for the film that depicts an elderly Leatherface! Jerad S Marantz was commissioned to create these designs.

Seeing as this film should have taken place 40 years after the original it makes sense that they were going with an older design. It’s pretty clear that the change to modern-day in the film was last minute, so perhaps these were scuttled to accomodate that. One thing I have to ask though – Leatherface wears other people’s skin. Did he start killing old people in an effort to be more age appropriate?

[Random Cool] A Graphic Of Every Kill In The ‘Texas Chainsaw’ Universe!!

While the powers that be work on getting the sequel to Texas Chainsaw 3D (review) off the ground – something they may be rethinking after its 80% drop this weekend – Andrew Barr over at the National Post has constructed a nifty little graphic breaking down every kill in the Leatherface universe. I “could” say canon, but it’s such a narratively disjointed place that it wouldn’t be appropriate.

These graphs have become increasingly popular, but face it – they’re no less fun to look at. Head inside to check it out! READ MORE

Now in theaters everywhere from Open Road is Marlon Wayans’ A Haunted House, which is destined to be the #1 movie at the boxoffice, despite a rash of negative reviews. “A Haunted House features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. Miscommunication Stalls ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Sequel From Revving Up This Summer…

We broke the news exclusively, first, before Deadline, that a sequel to Lionsgate and Millennium Films’ Texas Chainsaw 3D was given the green light. Apparently, we both spoke too soon.

The site has received word from the rights holders, producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producer Mark Burg, that the green light wasn’t Millennium Films chief Avi Lerner’s to give and they were surprised because no progress on this sequel has yet been made.

According to Mazzocone, its timing is his to dictate, and he and Burg say nothing will happen until they work out the creative beats with domestic distributor Lionsgate. READ MORE

Confirmed! New ‘Texas Chainsaw’ Sequel To Start Shooting Later This Year! Oddly Titled ‘Texas Chainsaw 4′?!

It was only a matter of time. Our exclusive report that a sequel to last weekend’s Texas Chainsaw 3D (review) has been greenlit was just confirmed by Millenium Entertainment. This is on the heels of a much better-than-expected opening weekend for the latest Sawyer tale.

We had previously reported that the producers behind Texas Chainsaw 3D had acquired the rights to make up to 7 more films and that the most Leatherface adventure was the beginning of an entire new franchise. Now at least one of those seven films will get underway with producer Carl Mazzocone (and an army of executive producers that include Tobe Hooper) still in charge. As far as Lionsgate is concerned, Millenium Films Chairman Avi Lerner said, “We very much hope to partner with them for the next chapter.

In a weird bit of news, reports have the title being Texas Chainsaw 4. Since TCM 3D was supposed to be a direct sequel to the 1974 original, I’m not sure how that works. I’d expect the title to change – soon (in fact I’m betting that it’s a reporting mistake and will be changed by morning). No work on if director John Luessenhop will return.

Oh yeah, and you won’t have to wait that long this time. The sequel apparently starts shooting this summer in Louisiana! I can only hope that it continues the insane premise set up at the end of TCM 3D.

[BD Review] Brad’s Take On ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’

Leatherface has returned in a big way slashing his way to the top of the box office.

Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D has raked in a whopping estimated $23 million proving that horror is king and that fans still want to see the Sawyer family in action.

Over the past few days we’ve been unveiling a slew of varied opinions, although Evan, Jonny and myself all seem to be in the same camp: we kinda liked it. You can read my take below, and watch this spot for news on a sequel in the next few months. READ MORE

Horror Dominates January Box Office. Again. ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ #1!

Slashing expectations, Texas Chainsaw 3D topped the domestic B.O. Friday with $10.2 million. Variety reports that the Lionsgate scarer, projected to earn in the mid teens this frame, is now looking at a three-day haul more in the low-to-mid $20 million range.

The pic appears to be following a trajectory similar to Paramount’s The Devil Inside, which beat expectations when it earned $34 million this time last year, though Chainsaw won’t likely hit that height, says the site. Late night Thursday screenings contributed $1.2 million to Friday’s figure.

Thus far Evan Dickson and Jonny B. have shared their reviews of the seventh sequel in the franchise that started with Tobe Hooper’s 1974 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

[BD Review] Jonny Gives His Take On ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is, like any other big horror franchise, riddled with its fair share of really bad entries. I don’t care what anyone says, TCM 3 and TCM: A New Beginning are awful. You can’t convince me otherwise. TCM 2 is charming and entertaining in its own way and while I’m not a huge fan of the remake it took the original concept and did its own thing, which I can admire.

But now we’ve entered Texas Chainsaw 3D, the first time a TCM movie has billed itself as a “direct sequel”, one that takes the story and events of the first film and expands upon the story. And what you end up with is a fun, if somewhat ridiculous, film that has some very interesting moments. READ MORE

Leatherface Revs Up For Chaos In Final Two ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Images!

While Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D is already in theaters, we still thought you hardcore Leatherface fans would appreciate a high resolution look at the final two photos from the film Evan Dickson calls “dumb fun.” The pics display your new Leatherface, Dan Yeager, revving up for some chaos!

“Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. [BD Review] Evan Dickson Calls ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Dumb Fun!

Leatherface has returned to theaters, only now he’s in 3-D!

Evan Dickson survived the onslaught and had this to say about Lionsgate’s hotly anticipated Texas Chainsaw 3D:

If “dumb fun” can still be considered harmless – because sometimes it feels like we’re fighting for the very survival of cinema and all that – then that’s exactly how I’d peg Texas Chainsaw 3D. It’s not what most people would call a “good movie”, I’m not sure I can even call it that. But I do know that it engaged me, entertained me and made me laugh more than at least 60% of the horror movies I saw last year.

[BD Review] ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Is Batsh*t Dumb But Kind Of Fun

If “dumb fun” can still be considered harmless – because sometimes it feels like we’re fighting for the very survival of cinema and all that – then that’s exactly how I’d peg Texas Chainsaw 3D. It’s not what most people would call a “good movie”, I’m not sure I can even call it that. But I do know that it engaged me, entertained me and made me laugh more than at least 60% of the horror movies I saw last year.

The film, from director John Luessenhop, is a direct sequel to the original 1974 film. There’s been a lot of talk about how this new version maintains the hard tone of that film, eschewing the campiness of the 1986 Tobe Hooper directed sequel. This isn’t exactly true. While it does indeed pick things up just a few hours moments after the ending of the original TCM, it quickly dives headfirst into a broad, bizarre terrain with seemingly no concern for the hyper-realism that shocked audiences almost 40 years ago. While the 1986 sequel was overtly, intentionally and brilliantly absurd, Texas Chainsaw 3D embodies a tonal realm familiar to anyone with an affinity for 70′s grindhouse trailers. Which is to say that engenders an appreciation that’s not quite ironic, but close enough.

No one in this movie is written, or behaves like, a human being. Our protagonist, Heather, is introduced as an infant during the opening raid on the Sawyer compound. In the film’s first severe break with reality, that infant is stolen in the middle of a mass slaughter by a hick who decides kicking a mother to death in order to complete his impromptu adoption falls appropriately under the banner of vigilante justice. We flash forward 20 years to the present day (which should be 1994 but is somehow 2012*) and Heather, played by Alexandra Daddario, is now a young woman. She also works as a butcher and likes to make collages out of chicken bones in her spare time. I suppose it’s here that Texas Chainsaw 3D throws its hat in the “nature vs. nurture” ring.

As you can see, we’re already well outside the aesthetic of the original film. It’s not what we were promised but, then again, it’s not exactly boring. Soon enough Heather discovers she was adopted and has inherited a vast estate in Newt, Texas. She and her friends hit the road, pick up a hitchhiker and head out on a mission to investigate. Once inside the house it doesn’t take long before the carnage starts. None of it is particularly scary, but it sort of flies by in a manner that I’d call “acceptable.” There’s a huge missed opportunity in the film’s carnival scene, which is only about a minute long, but that makes more room for Texas Chainsaw 3D to reveal its master plan. It’s here that the film takes the familial “blood is thicker than water” homily and runs to some truly bizarre (and morally murky) places with it.

If you weren’t a horror fan you wouldn’t be reading this review. While I might recommend that the public at large avoid this film, I have to admit I had a decent time with it and I think you will too provided you’re ok with the following checklist: 1. It’s not scary (the original remake trumps it in that regard). 2. It doesn’t really feel like a Texas Chainsaw movie. 3. It’s really dumb. 4. I read the comments and know a lot of you are looking forward to the carnival scene – don’t. That is not the reason to go.

Think long and hard. If you’re cool with those four points, then you’ll be okay with Texas Chainsaw 3D. And, selfishly, I want this movie to be a hit because there’s no end to the perverse joy I would take in the batsh*t sequel they seem to be setting up.

*I have no idea why this is. Perhaps to make room a FaceTime gag that’s the basis for the film’s best scene?

Leatherface Chucks His Chainsaw In Final ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Image!

Bloody D reader ‘Kelsy Teague’ just tossed us one final look at Texas Chainsaw 3D before its release tomorrow. [Interview] ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Cast And Director John Luessenhop Talk About Reinvigorating Leatherface And Making A True Sequel To The Original Film!
