5 Questions With ‘Thale’ Director ‘Aleksander Nordaas’!

XLrator Media is in the middle of its rollout for writer/director Aleksander NordaasThale. It opens in theaters tomorrow and hits DVD/VOD on April 23rd. I was surprised by the film, which takes an intimate look at a mythical creature in an intense, confined space. I recently hopped on the phone with Nordaas to talk about his approach to working in such a tight spot, whether or not he grew up with the lugend of the Huldra and how he coaxed such a visceral performance out of Thale herself, Silje Reinamo.

Starring Morten Andresen, Erlend Nervold, Jon Sigve Skard, and Silje Reinamo as Thale, “Two crime-scene cleaners discover a mythical, tailed female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her story, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together: she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface.

[TIFF '12 Review] Brad Finds ‘Thale’ Heavy On Bloat And CGI

Playing at TIFF this year is Thale, Aleksander Nordaas’ Norwegian horror film. In it, “Two crimes scene cleaners discover a mythical tailed, female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her tale herself, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together; she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface. Someone is approaching from outside. They want her back.

Brad (Mr. Disgusting) had a chance to check the film out at TIFF and he wasn’t exactly wowed. “While strong performances and bleak cinematography keep the film afloat, ultimately the bulk of the second act is less than engaging. It takes too long to get to the obvious revelation, which at one point escalates the film into full on terror mode. The audience does get to see some elder creatures, which deliver some violent retribution, but the heavy CGI hinders its impact and full potential.

[TIFF '12] Vanguard Selection Highlights: ‘Sightseers’, ‘Thale’, ‘Here Comes The Devil’ And More!!

Earlier today we gave you detailed rundowns on images from almost all of the TIFF Midnight Madness selections – along with a separate overall guide. While the Midnight Madness selections offer a great selection of horror (John Dies At The End, The Lords Of Salem, Aftershock, Hellbenders 3D, The ABC’s Of Death etc…) that’s not all the festival has to add to the genre world.

The Vanguard Selections might be less overtly gory, but a lot of them have the potential to be strong and disturbing genre efforts. Kill List director Ben Wheatley has Sightseers, there’s the horror sound booth chiller Berberian Sound Studios, animated comedy Hotel Transylvania (which technically falls into the “Kids” section, but hey – monsters), chick-with-a-tail tale Thale and much more.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6th-16th. Head inside for a preliminary rundown! READ MORE

See The Eerily Sexy ‘Thale’ In New Imagery

Back in January we brought you news of a Norwegian horror film is arriving later in 2012 that will tell the tale of the “huldra”. Aleksander Nordaas’ Thale follows a creepy chick with a cow’s tale that appears normal from the front, but will appear “hollowed out” from behind (like a tree trunk). We’ve now landed a few new images that give you a clear look at said creature. We’ve added below, while inside you’ll find tons of clips and trailers.

Here’s the newly released plot crunch: “Two crimes scene cleaners discover a mythical tailed, female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her tale herself, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together; she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface. Someone is approaching from outside. They want her back.

Here’s what Wiki says about the lore: “In some traditions, the huldra lures men into the forest to have sexual intercourse with her, rewarding those who satisfy her and often killing those who do not. The Norwegian huldra is a lot less bloodthirsty and may simply kidnap a man or lure him into the underworld. She sometimes steals human infants and replaces them with her own ugly huldrebarn (changeling huldre children). In some cases, the intercourse resulted in a child, being presented to the unknowing father. In some cases, she forces him to marry her.”
