Director Carl Tibbettes describes Retreat as a ‘character piece’ – which is accurate but possibly missing the word ‘predictable’. With a story about three people trapped in a house and a pandemic looming outside the door, a film already has a lot going for it. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a DVD release of Retreat (review) which stars Cillian Murphy (Sunshine, 28 Days Later), Thandie Newton (Vanishing on 7th Street, 2012) and Jamie Bell (Death Watch, King Kong). The disc will be available to own on February 21, and should retail at around $30.99. The only extra material will be a Retreat: The Making Of featurette, and a photo gallery.

MTV has premiered two new clips from a pair of upcoming genre films starting with a fifth teaser for Paranormal Activity 3 — this one’s not for the kiddies. Directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the sequel arriving in theaters October 21 takes place in 1988 where young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

In Theaters February 18. An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain – surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night (Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo and newcomer Jacob Latimore) each find their way to a rundown bar, whose gasoline-powered generator and stockpile of food and drink make it the last refuge in a deserted city. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself, and only the few remaining light sources can keep them safe. Here’s an alternate plot crunch: Following a mysterious blackout, most of the population vanishes into thin air. As the remaining survivors converge in a small tavern to figure out what happened, the darkness returns to claim them one by one.
Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. 2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.
