5 Underrated Horror Movies!!!

Time heals all things. For me, this rings especially true of film criticism and the public’s assessment of a film’s quality. When John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982, it was rejected by audiences and critics alike. Meanwhile, MGM’s remake of The Amityville Horror grossed well over $100M worldwide upon its release in 2005. Who has even seen that movie in the past 7 years?

To that end, there are a few films whose legacies and merit I feel deserve some modicum of reconsideration. I’m not saying I’ve picked 5 movies that are secretly The Thing level of quality – none of them are THAT good. But I still think that these are deserving films that got short shrift. They’re the epitome of “underrated.”

Amazing New Posters For ‘The Amityville Horror’ Sure To Go Quick!

If you’re any kind of fan of The Amityville Horror then you’ll be scrambling to pick one of these posters up (via Collider). And scramble is the operative word. The regular edition is limited to 225 prints and the uber-green variant is limited to 25 copies flat. Both of them glow in the dark!

They come from Odd City Entertainment, are designed by the artist NE and are released tomorrow, April 23rd. All of them are signed and numbered and their size is 24×36.

Scream For ‘Amityville’ On Blu-ray!

Fans of The Amityville Horror and its’ two immediate successorsAmityville II: The Possession and Amityville 3D will no doubt be thrilled to hear that they are going to be reissued on Blu-ray by Shout Factory’s horror division, Scream Factory, as The Amityville Trilogy.

“We teased the following weeks ago but now we will confirm it: THE AMITYVILLE HORROR TRILOGY (consisting of the ’79 original, the ’82 prequel and the ’83 3D entry) will be making its way from us in a Blu-ray collection set before Halloween. That’s a lot of bleeding walls, flies, demons, possessed family members in HD! More specifics (extras, street date, etc.) to emerge in the Summer.”

‘The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes’ Gets New Release Date

With the Amityville-inspired The Conjuring opening in theaters next July, Dimension Films is hoping to use the film’s potential success to hype their long-gestured The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes, the “official” Amityville sequel that once had Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands attached to direct.

Dimension has announced today that they hope to have it completed in time for a January 3, 2014 release.

The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes showcases the events after the time of the original “The Amityville Horror” book and movie through found footage dating back to 1976. “An ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leads a team of journalists, clergymen and paranormal researchers into an investigation of the bizarre events that will come to be known as The Amityville Horror … only to unwittingly open a door to the unreal that she may never be able to close.” READ MORE

The passing of time provides us with context and perspective. And, when it comes to film, while box office is the most immediate gauge of a film’s impact – it’s not the best. Time and context are the best gauges. When you watch Slither or The Thing now do you think of their underwhelming box office? Probably not. You think about how you’ve seen them a million times and still love them (unless you read my article in October), which is how it should be. Box office is temporal and ultimately irrelevant to your enjoyment

But when you reverse this approach by taking films that you rarely even think about anymore and look up their grosses, you get some surprising results. IE – “That made HOW much?!” The same goes for movies that you love but assume – due to them actually being daring and good – that they must have been flops. With that in mind, I’ve decided to share the results of a recent foray into the past. Note that some of these films might not be “hits” when viewed through the lens of the return on their production budget (and these amounts don’t include foreign takes or ancillary revenue streams like DVD and VOD). No, these are just movies that shocked me when I saw certain numbers beside their title.

Just in time for Halloween, the owners of the home made famous in the spooky 1970s film The Amityville Horror are dramatically slashing the asking price on their Toms River, New Jersey, colonial, which was used for exteriors in the film, reports CNN. The decision wasn’t triggered by demonic activity, however. Apparently, another frightening “D” word was to blame. “My husband and I are getting a divorce,” said Odalys Fragoso, who bought the house with her husband Jose Fragoso in 2001. “It’s not that the house is haunted or anything. We had wonderful times in that house.” The couple purchased the house for $795,000. Originally listed last year at $1.45 million, the four-bedroom, three-bath home is now going for $955,000 — a bargain, according to the agent. “If there were a curse on it, I wouldn’t be in it,” joked Donna Walesiewicz, the broker selling the 3,370-square-foot residence. “It is what it is, a nice old stately home.” Continue reading over at CNN.

Or, would you rather live in an exact replica of Disneyland and Disneyworld’s “Haunted Mansion”?

Theme Park Connection, a company that specializes in selling rare Disney collectibles, has posted the 10,000-square-foot-home in Duluth, GA, for $873,000 on eBay, says THR. The four-story, seven bedrooms, six bath mansion was custom-built to the dimensions and architectural structure of Disney’s ride attraction. Owner and designer Mark Hurt, who is also a Disney contractor, included a matching children’s playhouse, a hot tub, a two-story library, an elevator shaft, and in-law/nanny suite. Hurt even used the same foundry as Walt Disney to make the hand-welded iron railings of the balconies. One of the bathrooms is supposed to give that “haunted” effect. When the faucet turns on, the lights flicker and dim as a skeleton appears in the mirror, and the ride’s music and voiceover echos on for a “spooky” time.

Movie posters seem to be a dying art these days. One of the reasons we get so excited over a good one is because it’s almost as rare as seeing a unicorn. While boutique companies like Mondo regularly craft amazing and passionate one-sheets, it’s a business that the studios themselves rarely engage in anymore. I mean, Drew Struzan is still around, don’t you guys think he should be working more? As far as horror posters go, the 70′s and 80′s were obviously the halcyon days.

And that’s not only in the US! Earlier today Lonmonster stumbled across a ton of 80′s horror movie posters from Thailand (via Monster Brains)! And they’re amazing! We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! So in addition to your ranking, let us know which films should make the cut! Should newer fan favorites like Frozen or The Devil’s Rejects be included? Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

Miramax/Weinsteins Team on ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and ‘Amityville’ Sequels

Miramax and The Weinstein Company today announced an agreement to create sequels to some of Miramax’s best-known properties and to partner on potential new television shows and special edition home entertainment products. Included in the announcement were sequels to (are you ready?) From Dusk Till Dawn and The Amityville Horror (finally). This partnership augments an existing relationship between the companies on such franchises as Scream 4 (to be released April 15, 2011), and Scary Movie 5. In addition, Miramax will handle digital distribution on select sequel projects. Miramax and TWC have also agreed to develop new, special edition materials for Blu-ray releases, such as roundtables featuring cast and directors. What would you want from a Dusk Till Dawn or Amityville sequel? The Amityville Tapes – a cinema verite-styled sequel – had been in development for quite some time, I wonder if this will be revived?
