Rob Zombie Had A “Miserable Experience” Making The ‘Halloween’ Films, Was Going To Make ‘The Blob’ Serious

With The Lords of Salem still fresh in theaters, Rob Zombie has been doing quite a bit of press for the film. And he’s a great interview. However you feel about his work, he doesn’t seem to bullsh*t quite as much as a lot of other celebrity horror directors and I found him impressively candid in my interview with him a few weeks back.

He recently spoke to The Playlist and elaborated on his experiences with the Halloween films. “I really like those films. I didn’t have a good time making them. It was actually a kind of miserable experience. Anytime they vary from the format is when I really like them.”

And varying from the format is what he wanted to do with his remake of The Blob, though the fact that it was another remake at all seems to be what turned him off to the project. Head inside for his take on that! READ MORE

1958 ‘The Blob’ Gets Criterion Blu-ray Release!!

On Blu-ray March 12, 2013 via Criterion is Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.’s classic 1958 The Blob, which starred the great Steve McQueen and Aneta Corsaut!

“A cult classic of gooey greatness, The Blob follows the havoc wreaked on a small town by an outer-space monster with neither soul nor vertebrae, with Steve McQueen playing the rebel teen who tries to warn the residents about the jellylike invader. Strong performances and ingenious special effects help The Blob transcend the schlock sci-fi and youth delinquency genres from which it originates. Made outside of Hollywood by a maverick film distributor and a crew whose credits mostly comprised religious and educational shorts, The Blob helped launch the careers of McQueen and composer Burt Bacharach, whose bouncy title song is just one of this film’s many unexpected pleasures.”

[Remember This?] When Horror Movies Were Fun!

“Remember This?” is a new feature that highlights cool anecdotes from the horror genre’s storied past. It’ll pop up from time to time, giving your brain a spark of an insane memory before you move on with your day.

A few weeks back I was feeling a little soul sick. Not in a hugely existential way, but the movies I was watching were getting me down. I had watched a bunch of screeners and, while I loved many of them on a critical level, an emotional level and even a visceral level, they just weren’t much fun. I’m not complaining, I know I’m immensely lucky and I wouldn’t trade a “bad” week of watching screeners for a “good” week anywhere else. But after watching a seemingly endless parade of movies that were either incredibly serious, post apocalyptic, or just brutally depressing – I needed a palate cleanser. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for bleak horror, but there are so many other colors to our gruesome tapestry that have increasingly gone unused.

I’m not sure what it is but I sometimes feel like a lot of modern horror filmmakers are trying to “out hardcore” each other in terms of sheer dourness. That’s an odd competition to me. I’d rather see more writers and directors try to top each other in inventiveness, scares, characters, plotting and good old fashioned splatter.

That Friday night, I happened upon Chuck Russell’s 1988 The Blob remake. Written by Frank Darabont (it’s Russell and Darabont’s followup to their success with A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) and starring Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon – it was just what I needed. An amazingly fun 1st act, a 2nd act that flew by and a 3rd act that went absolutely apesh*t (with added conspiracy theory)! Lots of gore, interesting characters, a good sense of humor and near perfect pacing. It was such a breath of fresh air.

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

A mysterious creature from another planet, resembling a giant blob of jelly, lands on earth. The people of a nearby small town refuse to listen to some teenagers who have witnessed the blob’s destructive power. In the meantime, the blob just keeps on getting bigger.
