5 Great Alternate Horror Posters!!!

This list is directly inspired by a post I did a few months back that featured 11 Alternate Horror Posters from Thailand. As I was looking this over last night and enjoying the artwork once again, I thought, “well of course there’s a sh*tload more of these out there.” They don’t only have to be from Thailand. So this morning I did some digging and found a few more that I liked.

There’s something about an alternate poster for a movie you love, especially if it’s a one-sheet you’ve never seen before. It can give you a little extra boost, some new imagery that you already have a positive association with. A foreign poster can also be a cool window into how other cultures experience (and market) your favorite films.

The great thing about this is that you never run out of them. There’s tons of horror movies and even more countries to release them in. So, every once in a while, let’s check in and see what comes up. If you come across something to share, send it to

Evil Dead Month marches on here at Bloody-Disgusting! One of the most important aspects of the Evil Dead films (sans Army Of Darkness of course), is the cabin they take place in. Having seen the new remake, I can verify that the aesthetic and layout are more or less the same as they were in the first two films of the original trilogy. Of course, while they may be the pinnacle of the “Cabin In The Woods” subgenre – there’s a sh*t ton more where that came from!

These kind of films are among my favorite in horror, I love a good rural setting. So I’m almost jealous that The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards) got the idea for this list – which he wrote – first!

10 Amazing Horror Comedies!!!

Horror Comedies are by far the most difficult horror sub-genre to execute. They’re also the most likely to fail commercially. While they’re one of my favorite sub genres and I wish there were more of them, when you combine those factors it’s a miracle there aren’t even less.

And many of them are quite great! So much so that I had to strip all numbers and rankings out of this list. While I certainly like some more than others, when you get down to stuff like Gremlins and An American Werewolf In London you’re dealing with grade A classics to which assigning a number would be an insult.

Also, please note that while I love The Cabin In The Woods and Scream, I don’t consider them “comedies.” They’re both intentionally funny, but I feel like their laughs exist to provoke a very specific conversation about horror tropes, which is its own thing.

When it comes to endings, sometimes you’ve got to take the advice of Jesus (as played by Jerry Cantrell in Jerry Maguire) and hang your balls out there to be great. So while all of these endings are awesome, most of them aren’t exactly happy. It’s not that I’m against happy endings, but often they clash so harshly with the film’s overall tone and theme that you just know they’re tacked on compromises.

A few months ago I wrote a piece called 5 Horror Films With Amazing Endings and you guys had a lot to say on the matter. The IMP Nominates ‘V/H/S’ For Best Horror Movie Poster!

We’re incredibly excited to report that IMP Awards, the premiere poster website, has nominated the theatrical V/H/S one-sheet for “Best Horror Poster”!

“Bringing back memories of the poster for Visiting Hours this skull image made up of someone’s deranged video collection manages to hint at the plot of the film while still providing a creepy image,” says the site.

Designed by Gravillis Inc. for Magnet Releasing, the poster is nominated against The Cabin in the Woods, The Woman in Black, The Possession and In Their Skin.

V/H/S is now available on DVD, Blu-ray and even Netflix Instant. Another tape was discovered – S-VHS – and will premiere at Sundance this coming weekend. READ MORE

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough. Rendering that image in a manner that resembles actual artwork (or something you’d hang on your wall)? Even tougher.

I get why it goes wrong sometimes. Whenever a sh*tty poster hits a lot of people blame the artist, but they’re not the only ones at fault. Studio marketing departments emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets – often sacrificing a compelling key art campaign in the process. Today we celebrate the posters that made it out alive, the ones with flair.

Some of them are for great films and and others are merely great posters for “okay” films. And some of these movies haven’t even come out yet, but their posters have – rendering them fair game. Head inside and click on their banners to check ‘em out! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Trailers Of The Year!

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need trailers. We’d magically show up at the movie theater, be seated in front of a screen and watch an amazing movie that we, up until that point, had never seen a frame of footage from.

But the world we actually live in is occasionally not-so-great, so trailers exist. Silver lining? At lot of trailers are badass! Some of them are sometimes (unfortunately) better than the film they’re selling! An effective teaser can often be an inspiring piece of work that you watch again and again.

With that in mind I set out to take a look at trailers released this year that actually got me excited. Some of the these movies haven’t come out yet, nor have I seen all of them. But that’s the point! If a trailer has me stoked about next year – it’s a success. And with some of the other teasers I almost wish I hadn’t seen the movie, so perfect were the two minutes they chose to promote it with.

[News Bites] ‘Kilometer 31′ Sequel, Japanese Posters For ‘Cabin in the Woods’ and ‘Storge 24′

Twitch is reporting that Mexican director Rigoberto Castaneda is developing a sequel to his 2006 horror Kilometer 31. No details are present at this time. In KM 31, “After the tragic death of their mother when they were children, twin sisters Agata and Catalina Hameran developed a special skill, a way of communicating without speaking, a “link” between them. After a mysterious accident on Kilometer 31, Agata falls into a coma. Catalina, thanks to their “link”, feels the pain and tragedy that her sister is going through at the time of the accident. Following a series of supernatural events, Catalina realizes that their “link” is stronger than ever and that her sister Agata is screaming for help from her unconscious state. Catalina is now determined to find out what really happened to her sister in order to help her wake up. Nuño, Agata’s long time friend, and Omar, Catalina’s boyfriend, agree to help her. But they soon find out that not only is Agata in a coma, but she is also trapped between reality and an ancient legend, the legend of La Llorona.”

In addition, the IMP Awards has shared Japanese posters for Lionsgate’s The Cabin in the Woods and Magnet’s Storage 24, both already released here in the States. Drew Goddard’s Cabin, which made plenty of our year end “best” lists, follows a group of friends at a cabin retreat scratch the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out. [BEST & WORST '12] Evan Dickson’s List Of The Best Horror Films Of 2012!

This was a weird year. There weren’t that many great “straight up” horror movies out there, at least not in my eyes. I feel like the genre is at a turning point where it’s about to be reinvigorated, I’ve already seen a few of the films coming out next year (ones that simultaneously fit the definitions of the genre while taking it to new places) and I think 2013 will represent a turning point. 2012 saw the genre tentatively figuring out how to spread its wings in the age of huge budget divides (just like the American middle class, medium sized films are on the wane), VOD and a shifting landscape in general.

So don’t be surprised if some of these movies don’t 100% fall under the “horror” category. It’s not like I tossed Cloud Atlas on here or anything, I operated from the films that we cover on the site, but you’ll see what I’m talking about inside. On occasion we cover some great stuff that doesn’t rigidly fit the definitions of the genre, but it’s material that we feel appeals to horror fans’ sensibilities. That being said, I also kept this year’s “best of” list to films that were released in 2012. I still saw plenty of movies that I fell in love with, and here are 10 that you might dig as well. As you can imagine, I watch a lot of horror movies, and having to choose my favorite films of the year was a righteous challenge. It’s a rare occurrence to sit through a movie and feel completely fulfilled. But it’s the great films that make my job so worthwhile. Taking the time to reflect on my favorite films of 2012 allowed me to appreciate just how wonderful horror can be. It made me proud to be a part of this community.

My list is a true melting pot, gathering studio films and indie films alike in order to showcase that good horror comes in all shapes and sizes. In fact, my top film of the year is probably the one with the lowest budget.

Every year I seem to have a conversation with someone about how weak the year was for horror. Reflecting back, I think it’s more so that every year there are a few gems that need plucking from a landfill of garbage. This doesn’t mean it was a “bad year,” it just means that the goodies are to be discovered and then celebrated.

My odd scenario comes in that I attend major festivals – Sundance, SXSW, TIFF and more- thus, I see quite a bit more than the average folk…and I see everything early. This isn’t me bragging, more so just a note that, like previous years, most of the films on my list have yet to be released.

I just hope that this list, which also carries the first two ever “Editor’s Choice” tags, gives you all a few films to be excited for in 2013. Shit, you may finally get to see You’re Next this year, too! READ MORE

Roadside Attractions will release Barry Levinson‘s eco-horror film The Bay in theaters, Video On Demand and iTunes on November 2nd. This is the Academy Award (Rain Man) winner’s first foray into horror.

I recently hopped on the phone with Levinson and we discussed his approach to the found-footage format, his use of gore and the very real environmental calamities that shaped his narrative.

Starring Will Rogers, Steven Kunken, Kether Donohue, Frank Deal, Christopher Denham and Kristin Connelly, “Two million fish washed ashore. One thousand blackbirds dropped from the sky. [Blu-ray Review] ‘The Cabin In The Woods’ Is Still Nuts In A Good Way

The biggest question surrounding The Cabin in the Woods has nothing to do with the numerous surprises or unique framework, but rather why nobody picked it up to get it out of MGM bankruptcy hell sooner – the post-conversion nonsense certainly didn’t help much either (neither did all the legal tape associated with it, but I digress), and thank God they didn’t go down that road. The film plays out as an assimilation and exploration of horror tropes, seen from one perspective and lived out by another, that culminates into the most batshit insane third act since Dead Alive’s lawnmower and rooftop brawl combo. It’s almost as if geek favorite Joss Whedon and wunderkind writer Drew Goddard cracked open their heads and let all their horror memories flow out, and then scrambled them up into this really weird, engrossing meta approach. Cabin might not change your life and time will tell if it serves as a template for where the genre heads next, but one thing it’s definitely not is unoriginal. READ MORE

And if you’re feeling impatient (or don’t like discs) it’s available right now on iTunes (link here).

I’d really recommend holding out for the Blu-ray though. The extras are amazing, the picture is great and the commentary from Whedon and Goddard is top notch. io9 got their hands on some cool video from the Blu which features many of the monters you may have missed.

In the film, “A rambunctious group of five college friends steal away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, only to be attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. Sound familiar? Just wait. As the teens begin to exhibit standard horror movie behavior, a group of technicians in a control room are scrutinizing, and sometimes even controlling, every move the terrified kids make. Lionsgate Home Entertainment is said to have set a September 18 DVD, Blu-ray and VOD date for Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods, which slashed into theaters Friday, April 13. Specs have yet to be revealed, but there is art below.

‘Cabin In The Woods’ Was Supposed To Be Direct-To-DVD In Australia, Until The Fans Spoke Up!

Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods is my favorite horror film of the year so far and, while I’m excited to own it on Blu-ray in a month or two, I’m very grateful I had the chance to see it in theaters twice. As much as the theatrical experience can be a pain in the ass these days (I literally get angry about people texting before I even get to the theater), when it goes well there’s nothing like watching a great movie with a room full of people who are eating it up.

But Australian horror fans almost didn’t get the chance to have that experience. Village Roadshow, who is handling some of the foreign territories for the film, almost released to straight to DVD in that territory according to The Daily Telegraph. So what happened? The fans spoke up. They emailed the studio, they posted on its Facebook page and they wouldn’t relent.

Finally the studio caved. Per The Telegraph, “A major distributor bowed to fan pressure – something that rarely happens – and announced that ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ would be getting a theatrical release after all, albeit very limited. Despite only playing on seven screens in Australia it still managed to take $85,152 in its opening weekend – a considerable feat for a film you have to actively seek out.”

What’s the lesson here? Fight for good horror (and good films in general). Let the studios know that there is an audience that respects the film. It’s not about supporting “studio horror” or “indie horror” – their are plenty of terrible films on both sides of the fence that shouldn’t be supported. But support the stuff you love – that’s the only way to make sure you get it and it continues to even be made. READ MORE

I constantly find myself missing new articles while I still learn to navigate the back end of this massive new web endeavor, which is why I’m a bit late is pushing out to you guys the latest editions of News From the Crypt and Aural Pleasures.

This month on “News From the Crypt,” the crew jumps into the elevator to see what lies below The Cabin in the Woods and take a trip to the The Devil’s Carnival road show. Also, Horror Guy Keenan interviews the composer of “Silent Hill: Downpour and Dexter,” Daniel Licht, while Tex hangs out with director Don Coscarelli to talk about his adaptation of John Dies at the End. In the below tenth episode of “Aural Pleasures,” Adam, Jonny, and Bill take a moment to discuss a woman who got pregnant at a Megadeth/Motorhead show before launching into a topic that is near and dear to their hearts: video games! Lionsgate’s wonderful The Cabin in the Woods was released on Friday and looks to have wrangled in about $15 Million for the weekend. While it’s obviously not a record breaking hit, those aren’t terrible numbers either. A Cinemascore of around C indicates that about half the audience loved it and the other half hated it. Fair enough. But for those of you who loved it, I’d encourage you to spread the word to similarly minded friends and horror fans. Every time a new and original horror film is released it’s a crucial moment – the studios are watching. And they know that while horror fans often clamor for new ideas and fresh blood, they often fail to show up at the box office. This is one of the reasons we get so many remakes and sequels.

You’ve already read Mr. Disgusting’s Review and David Harley’s Review, so I figured I would write less of a formal review and more of an informal (super-spoilery) addendum on why I love the film as well. As always, we love you even more when you write your own reviews.
