[DVD Review] ‘The Collection’ Is An Insane Array Of Creative Ways To Kill People

The Collection starts like a music video, glorifying party sluts at angles only an art student would use – all while untiss untiss. Dig it? However, it’s not 1999 anymore. If you go to raves, you deserve to die.

Such is the case in this sequel to 2009’s The Collector. Again directed by Marcus Dunstan, we take a seemingly innocent party atmosphere and turn it into a crazy epic bloodbath. The film then continues in this format, with such mannerisms, so much that the over the top torture porn looks choreographed. And really, the torture porn isn’t really over the top. It’s bareable. The Collection is simply yet another insane array of creative ways to kill people. It’s absolutely ridiculous, but for what it is, it works. READ MORE

[BD Review] Evan Calls ‘The Collection’ A Bigger, Sillier and Fun Sequel

Now in theaters everywhere is Marcus Dunstan’s The Collection, his and co-writer Patrick Melton’s sequel to their Saw-esq The Collector. Evan Dickson writes in with his thoughts on the film, which follows the further escapades of “The Collector,” and his massive collection.

While I didn’t fall in love with The Collection, there’s something admirable about its ambition to not be more of the same. Its increased scope and willingness to stray from the beats of its predecessor, The Collector, indicate that co-writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (the latter of whom also directed) have an actual creative engagement with the material. So if the good news is that they’re not treading the same ground as the first film, the bad news is that – depending on what you’re looking to get out of the experience – it may not work as well.

[BD Review] ‘The Collection’ Is A Bigger And Sillier Sequel That Still Manages To Be Fun

I rarely play the “depending what you’re looking to get out of the experience” card. After all, what you want is a good horror movie, right? The Collection is certainly entertaining enough to qualify in that regard. But if you’re looking for something with the tension, intimacy, character, relative subtlety and nuance of The Collector… you might be in for a surprise. I’m not the first one to make the Alien vs. Aliens comparison, but I think it’s an apt analogy that breaks down the fundamental differences between the two films. While The Collection has plenty of scares, traps and gore it’s almost an action movie at heart, complete with hired mercenaries subbing in for the colonial marines of Aliens. Another key similarity is that Arkin (Josh Stewart), who we last saw being slammed into a red trunk at the end of The Collector, makes an early escape only to be pressured into playing the Ripley role by leading the mercs back into the lair of The Collector – a world that only he knows.

Why are they heading into said lair? To rescue Elena (Emma Fitzpatrick), the daughter of a wealthy man with the means to hire his own security detail to retrieve her. She’s kidnapped in spectacular fashion during a the film’s particularly inspired opening sequence. Gone is the slow burn of The Collector‘s first 30 minutes, this sequel hits the ground running. If I had to guess, I’d say that around 80 people die in the exhilarating opening 15 minutes of the new film. From the opening titles on up to the aforementioned bloodbath, The Collection demonstrates an impressive swagger – but it has difficulty sustaining it.

A lot of that difficulty stems from the fact that we don’t care as much about the characters this time around. Arkin seems to have lost some dimensionality (which sort of makes sense given his predicament) and the mercenaries are almost flat-out anonymous, relying solely on smart casting to make an impact. When I spoke to Melton and Dunstan earlier this week, they conceded that with an 82 minute run time it’s nearly impossible to allow for Aliens style introductions to our “soldiers.” So there’s a conscious trade-off here in which The Collection sacrifices some potential investment in its secondary characters for sheer momentum.

And, for the most part, that trade-off works. The movie flies by with an impressive amount of carnage to behold. The Collector’s lair makes for a menacing, intricate and surprisingly beautiful setting. The statuesque displays of his prior victims are interesting and artful (even if I’m not sure how storing them in water could at all preserve them). Even additions that are tonal missteps that clash with the first film’s relative practicality, such as a captive/submissive pixie dream girl who would feel more at home in The People Under The Stairs, keep us alert (if not scratching our heads).

If you’re a fan of The Collector, I would advise you to see The Collection with the knowledge that you’re revisiting elements of the original within the context of a new genre. If you’ve never seen The Collector, that’s fine. The new film works well enough on its own intentionally silly terms.

Watch A 6 Minute Clip From ‘The Collection’!!

On November 30 LD Entertainment will open The Collection revealing all of the nasty items within. The film is directed by Marcus Dunstan and written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Saw IV-VII). It’s quite a bit different than The Collector, tonally speaking, and this 6 minute clip reflects that. I was about to call it the “first 6 minutes” of the film, but there’s actually a handful of important scenes that take place before this one. Still, it’s near the beginning and full of blood!

In the new sequel, “When Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) friends take her to a secret party at an undisclosed location, she never imagined she would become the latest victim of The Collector, a psychopathic killer. The Collector kidnaps and transports her to an abandoned hotel he’s transformed into his own private maze of torture and death. Upon learning of his daughter’s disappearance, Elena’s wealthy father (Christopher McDonald) hires a group of mercenaries to retrieve her from the vicious grips of The Collector. These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through thegruesome labyrinth. Marcus Dunstan And Patrick Melton On Changing Tone And Upping The Body Count For ‘The Collection’

On November 30 LD Entertainment will open The Collection revealing all of the nasty items within. The film is directed by Marcus Dunstan and written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton (their writing credits include Piranha 3DD, Feast, Saw IV, V, VI, Saw 3D and of course The Collector and Pacific Rim).

I sat down with the pair earlier this week and we discussed just how different the new film is from The Collector (hint, a LOT), which Friday The 13th herione Emma Fitzpatrick’s character is modeled on, how they worked to create the grisly sculptures in the film and their desire to make The Collected – the potential third installment of The Collector – even more of a departure.

These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through thegruesome labyrinth. [Special Feature] Psychology and Horror: Inside the Mind of a Psychopath… Dissecting ‘The Collection’!

Written By: Joseph Forsberg

There are currently more than 100 active serial killers in the United States and there is no explanation as to why a normal person could grow up to commit murder and sexual homicide. We see killing and rape as the most severe types of crime; we wonder how someone could find it fun to slit the throat of an unsuspecting victim and sexually assault the body. To a sociopath this is normal behavior; in fact, they find it weird that we do not have a similar impulse. Sociopaths have no conscience, they do not feel pain, they are impulsive, and will do whatever it takes to get themselves off! They are pure evil!

Today I am introducing a new segment to the site called “Psychology and Horror”. Each week I will break down specific serial killers from all of our favorite horror movies and give an in-depth explanation as to why these horror icons commit their crimes. My young friend “Mr. Guts” and I thought of Psychology & Horror when we discussed the reality aspect of horror movies. Are there really people who are as sick as Norman Bates, Mrs. Voorhees, Michael Myers and The Collector? As much as I want to give movie writers all the credit; the fact is that some horror movies are inspired by real life events. One such case would be Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho which was based on the life of Ed Gein. With that said, the real life story is NEVER as exciting as the movie; it takes a talented writer to take a real life incident and turn it into a classic that will never die! The Collector – from The Collector and The Collection (in theaters November 30) – will be the first killer I take on because of how unique and original he is. The Collector is different from Michael Myers and Jason due to the fact that he is human; he feels pain and can be killed. Arkin was more than able to bring out the human qualities in The Collector in the last 20 minutes of the movie. This movie takes on a realistic view because people like this exist; as a result, people begin to feel themselves get nervous while watching the movie, which has a long lasting affect! A movie where someone goes to hell and then ends up in space some in the following film (Jason X), just does not scream “HOLY SHIT THIS IS REALLY GOING TO HAPPEN!!” I am a Forensic psychology major and I admit I can be a little obsessive when it comes to horror movies.

Next week begins the “fans choice”! Choose from the following movies-Halloween Human Centipede 2 Psycho the original Friday the 13th or The Strangers. Users are also more than welcome to tell me what they would like to see in this segment! READ MORE
