If you liked The Divide, you’re in luck. Michael Biehn (Aliens, Terminator) is reteaming with that film’s director, Xavier Gens (Frontiers), for The Farm. It will be the first film in a three picture deal.

Per Variety, “Michael Biehn has joined forces with director Xavier Gens to produce three grindhouse films, launching the partnership with ‘The Farm.’ Pic is being produced by Jennifer Blanc Biehn, Michel Teicher and Avi Federgreen of Federgreen Entertainment/Indiecan Entertainment. Shooting is set to begin in early next year in Canada.

The film, “centers on a veteran who returns to Texas and must fight his inner demons to save his farm not merely from a greedy corporation but also a horror that threatens to devour the American heartland.Danielle Harris (Hatchet 2, Among Friends), Jennifer Blanc (The Victim), Michael Eklund (The Divide), Ivan Gonzalez (The Divide) and Courtney B. Vance (Final Destination 5) will star. Also announced under the deal are Up and Down, directed by Carlo Rizzo, and The Predicator, directed by Greg Morin.

Will they stick to the script this time or improv it like in The Divide?

Xavier Gens On Shooting ‘The Divide’ In Sequence, Improv, And Whether He’d Like To Survive A Nuclear Blast

XavierGens42012 Xavier Gens On Shooting The Divide In Sequence, Improv, And Whether Hed Like To Survive A Nuclear Blast

Earlier this week, Anchor Bay released The Divide as a Blu-ray/DVD combo. The film is bleak as all get out, and I imagine many of you will be disturbed and engrossed by the depths many of its characters go to in order to eke out some kind of survival. Director Xavier Gens (Frontiers) does not shy away from dark places.

I recently conducted an interview with Gens via email, and though I obviously couldn’t hear the tone of his voice I was surprised at how [comparatively] lighthearted his answers were. We spoke about his decision to shoot in-sequence, rumors of tension on set, and if – in the event of a nuclear blast – he would prefer to live or die.

In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller starring Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance and Lauren German are, “nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape even with no promise of salvation on the outside.

Closer to Death

[Closer to Death] ‘The Divide’ Nukes New York City

Almost nothing is more fatal than the nuclear bomb. Just two of them killed an estimated 225,000 people between Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, and we live our lives with the threat of thousands of them being unleashed over our heads at any given moment.

In The Divide – now available on DVD and Blu-ray – Michael Biehn and others are subject to the fury of a massive nuclear bomb attack on the outskirts of New York City. As brutal an example of degenerating humanity as the film is, The Divide still circumvents the mind shattering reality that gets implied for Manhattan Island. The walls of fire, the collapsing skyscrapers. The atomic force blasts that would have rocked the flesh right off the population’s bones.

Outside that New York City basement shelter, its easy to say that ten million would have perished. Those not crushed like gnats by the falling debris of a thousand steel and brick buildings would have been baked alive in the fire, or sickened to fatality from radiation poisoning. In this Closer to Death, we take a look at when man becomes victim to one the deadliest forces in human history: The Atomic Bomb. READ MORE

To that end, the clip we have actually takes place in the beginning of the film so it’s comparatively light-hearted (or as light-hearted as things get when you’re trapped in a basement after a nuclear blast). It also gives you a feel for what the interplay is like on the film’s commentary track as Xavier Gens, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Ecklund riff off each other while discussing the film.

[Interview] Michael Biehn Talks ‘The Divide’, Says The Cast “F*cking Hated Each Other”

Divide still1110311 [Interview] Michael Biehn Talks The Divide, Says The Cast F*cking Hated Each Other

I enjoyed my interview with Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) quite a bit more than I enjoyed The Divide (in theaters this Friday) itself. The film, from Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens, is a deeply bleak post-apocalyptic thriller.

While I have no problem with bleak material, there needs to be something else there – some kind of unifying theme or exceptional storytelling – for any movie to feel complete. And The Divide doesn’t have it. There are some great elements to the film, Xavier Gens’ direction combined with Laurent Bares photography makes for some very impressive atmosphere (especially when you consider that it was shot on a small set in a short amount of time). But the script is a mess. The following interview with Michael Biehn more than hints as to why – much of the script was discarded and large amounts of the film were improv’d (which certainly explains the erratic character work).

That being said, I’m a fan of many of Biehn’s films. He was one of my film heroes as a kid (Kyle Reese and Corporal Hicks – come on!) so I was eager to sit down with him for a quick chat. He’s also one of the best things about the movie.

Unfortunately, before I could ask my first question, he asked me what I thought of The Divide. Caught off guard, I replied “eh…” The video starts right after Biehn asks me to elaborate. We get back on track pretty quick though and touch on various subjects such as the cast “hating each other” and Biehn’s upcoming directorial debut, The Victim.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival Event Report: Day 6

Toronto After Dark Film Festival Event Report: Day 6

Tonight’s screening of The Divide is a sell-out. Audiences were treated to the appearances of such genre favorites, Michael Biehn (Terminator & Aliens) and Milo Ventimiglia (“Heroes”). So far, this was the most enthusiastic crowd response at this year’s Toronto After Dark.

BLIND SPOT

A single take 6-minute short about a guy so caught up with settling an issue with a travel agent, he doesn’t realize some serious shit is going down all around him. While the film lacks a punchy ending, the visual effects are pretty impressive.

THE DIVIDE

As of late, audiences have been treated to a seemingly never-ending stream of post-apocalyptic titles such as, I Am Legend, The Road and The Book Of Eli, to name a few. The Divide is yet another entry. I came into this film with minimal expectations. The opening moments of mass destruction soon changed all that. Director, Xavier Gens (Frontier(s) & Hitman) brings us a vision that’s both equally beautiful and horrifying. READ MORE

SXSW ’11 REVIEW: ‘The Divide’ is “Terrifying and Bleak”

Earlier this week Anchor Bay pulled out the check book and spent over a million bucks on Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens’ The Divide, a tense post-apocalyptic thriller that takes to a NYC bunker where a group of apartment tenants fight to stay alive.

‘The Divide’ is a terrifying and bleak vision of the future whose performances and images will stick with you for days after you watch it. Gens’ direction and Laurent Barès cinematography create a moody, claustrophobic atmosphere that never feels stale despite its closed-quarters setting. The tone is vile and the characters devolve into sickening states of being, but the reality-based approach to Gens’ end of days makes for one of the best apocalyptic tales in quite a while.
