[Fantastic Fest '12] First Wave Of Films Announced!!! ‘Dredd 3D’ To Premiere!

I have still never been to Fantastic Fest and every year it gets to be a big reminder that, at some point, I need to get back down to Austin to check it out at some point. We already knew that Frankenweenie would be playing. Now they’ve announced that director Pete Travis’ nuts violent Dredd 3D (written by Alex Garland) will be making its premiere at the fest, which will be held from September 20-27 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U.S., specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world. In years past the festival has been home to world premieres of There Will Be Blood, Apocalypto, Zombieland, The Human Centipede 2 and Red while the guest roster has included such talent as Mel Gibson, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Ryan Reynolds, Karl Urban, Josh Hartnett, The RZA, Dolph Lundgren, Jemaine Clement, Paul Rudd, Bill Pullman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau, George Romero, Darren Aronofsky and Mike Judge. Fantastic Fest also features world, national and regional premieres of new, up-and-coming genre films. Fantastic Fest is held each year at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on South Lamar in Austin, Texas.

You can check out their official site, Facebook and Twitter. Head inside to check out the rest of the titles which include Dead Sushi, Room 237 and Cockneys Vs. Zombies. READ MORE

[Horror In Your House] July 3rd, 2012

This week doesn’t contain a large number of releases, but what it lacks in volume it more than makes up for in quality. Literally, for the first time ever I am buying every movie listed below. First on my list is The Entity which is finally being released on Blu-ray by Anchor Bay. On top of that, crowd pleaser Some Guy Who Kills People has arrived along with Bobcat Goldthwait’s latest piece of demented cinema, God Bless America. But that’s not all, the AMAZING Tasmanian Tiger hunting flick, Hunter starring Willem DaFoe and Sam Neil is also out. Almost too much goodness for one week.

Happy 4th of July, Everyone!

THE ENTITY (DVD / Blu-ray) (1982) – Anchor Bay

Entity [Horror In Your House] July 3rd, 2012Oscar-nominee Barbara Hershey (Black Swan, Insidious) stars as Carla Moran, a hard-working single mother until the night she is raped in her bedroom by someone — or something — that she cannot see. Despite skeptical psychiatrists, she is repeatedly attacked in her car, in the bath, and in front of her children. Could this be a case of hysteria, a manifestation of childhood sexual trauma, or something even more horrific? Now with a group of daring parapsychologists,Carla will attempt an unthinkable experiment: to seduce, trap and ultimately capture the depraved spectral fury that is THE ENTITY. Ron Silver (Reversal of Fortune, Ali) co-stars in this supernatural shocker directed by Sidney J. Furie (Iron Eagle, The Ipcress File) from a screenplay by Frank De Felitta (Audrey Rose), based on his bestselling novel.

MICAH SAYS: CO-PICK OF THE WEEK. One of the finest horror flicks on the entire 1980s (and near the top of my all time list). Heck, even Martin Scorsese has this in his top ten horror flicks of all time. Ghost Rape for president.

GOD BLESS AMERICA (DVD / Blu-ray) – Magnolia Home Entertainment

Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank feels he has nothing left to live for. However, instead of taking his own life, he embarks on a killing spree with cohort Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement, and together they embark on a nation-wide assault on our country s dumbest, most irritating celebrities.

MICAH SAYS: I’m including this movie because you need to see it. Period. Bobcat Goldthwait’s directing chops are getting progressively better and better.

HUNTER (DVD / Blu-ray) – Magnolia Home Entertainment

Martin David, a skilled and focused mercenary, is sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger’s genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family. However, as his attachment to the family grows, he is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission.

MICAH SAYS: CO-PICK OF THE WEEK. Like The Grey , but with even more existentialism. This one isn’t going to be for everyone as it is the definition of a slow burn, but it’s once it traps your attention you are in for an absolute treat. Willem DaFoe delivers one of his best and most devastating performances to date. In my top five for they year.

SOME GUY WHO KILLS PEOPLE – Anchor Bay

At first glance, Ken Boyd may seem like an average comic enthusiast, living with his mother and working to make ends meet as an underpaid, underappreciated ice cream parlor attendant. But Ken has a dirty little secret: he fantasizes about killing people. After being released from a stay in the loony bin, for severe mental trauma suffered when he was beaten and tortured by a gang of high school thugs, Ken’s repressed anger suddenly reaches a boiling point. With gleeful enthusiasm Ken hunts down his tormentors, one by one, and exacts his bloody revenge.

MICAH SAYS: Another movie that everyone should watch. It’s funny, dark and full of awesome.

COMICS TO FEAST ON: Week Of September 28th 2011

Well boils and ghouls, this is the final week of The New 52 #1s. It’s been a very exciting month and for the most part it’s been pretty easy to tell which of DC’s new titles will be sticking around. But, this is a big week for the “dark” releases! DC’s new books are selling like hot cakes (whatever that mean), so make a pull list if you don’t already have one!

Obviously there are loads of other comics coming out this week from other publishers, but in honor of such a milestone event, most of the books in this week’s COMICS TO FEAST ON are from DC’s New 52 lineup. Now I know you won’t be buying all 52 new series so let us know which books you can’t wait for!

With the ever-increasing number of books coming out between the tie-ins, the crossovers, and the new series, we’ve got to limit our list of comics for the week somehow. Rather than focus on every major comic hitting the shelves I’ll narrow it down to ten books that stand out from the rest. Whether you’ve been into comics since you were a young’un, or you’re new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books to read. Read on for the skinny…
