[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Posters Of The Year!

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough. Rendering that image in a manner that resembles actual artwork (or something you’d hang on your wall)? Even tougher.

I get why it goes wrong sometimes. Whenever a sh*tty poster hits a lot of people blame the artist, but they’re not the only ones at fault. Studio marketing departments emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets – often sacrificing a compelling key art campaign in the process. Today we celebrate the posters that made it out alive, the ones with flair.

Some of them are for great films and and others are merely great posters for “okay” films. And some of these movies haven’t even come out yet, but their posters have – rendering them fair game. Head inside and click on their banners to check ‘em out! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Trailers Of The Year!

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need trailers. We’d magically show up at the movie theater, be seated in front of a screen and watch an amazing movie that we, up until that point, had never seen a frame of footage from.

But the world we actually live in is occasionally not-so-great, so trailers exist. Silver lining? At lot of trailers are badass! Some of them are sometimes (unfortunately) better than the film they’re selling! An effective teaser can often be an inspiring piece of work that you watch again and again.

With that in mind I set out to take a look at trailers released this year that actually got me excited. Some of the these movies haven’t come out yet, nor have I seen all of them. But that’s the point! If a trailer has me stoked about next year – it’s a success. And with some of the other teasers I almost wish I hadn’t seen the movie, so perfect were the two minutes they chose to promote it with.

Head inside for the best trailers of the year (in no particular order)! READ MORE

The ‘Evil Dead’ Teaser Poster Has Serious, SERIOUS Balls!!!

FilmDistrict has revealed the official teaser poster for Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed reboot to Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic about a group of kids who unleash demons in a cabin deep in the woods.

The poster – obviously inspired by The Social Network – doesn’t show much, other than the back of a presumably possessed female, along with the bold assertion: “The most terrifying film you will ever experience.

What I love about the proclamation is that the studio isn’t using critic quotes, they’re using their own voice to promise you that come April 12, 2013 you will be a believer. The use of the word “experience” is also telling as it implies you’ll be more than being scared, Evil Dead is a movie that will physically rattle you. They have some serious balls, now let’s hope they live up to the hype!

Jane Levy Is Mortified Of WHAT In This Exclusive ‘Evil Dead’ Image?!

Slightly teased in the mind-blowing trailer premiere (watch it inside), Bloody Disgusting has landed an exclusive look at the second official still from Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic The Evil Dead.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you’re unaware of the madness that’s unleashed when the Book of the Dead is recited from (again). Some of the footage is absolutely horrific, which is why the following image premiere is so perfect. What you’ll see below is star Jane Levy with the most terrified expression I think I’ve ever seen on film. Clearly, something mortifying is approaching.

Says Alvarez, revealing a minor spoiler that’s displayed within the trailer: “That’s Mia seconds before loosing her tree rape virginity…” The scene is an homage to Raimi’s original where Cheryl (played by Ellen Sandweiss) is raped by a tree.

In theaters April 12, 2013 from FilmDistrict, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. [Random Cool] Dig On This Wicked Fan Made ‘Evil Dead’ Poster!

While scouring Twitter we stumbled onto a piece of fan made art for FilmDistrict’s forthcoming Evil Dead that blew our minds. Penned (literally) by artist Karthik Abhiram, the art depicts a montage of imagery showed in the film’s trailer.

For making the drawing, I followed my usual process – I took several screenshots from the trailer and used them as reference,” said Abhiram. “The drawing was done using primarily a black ballpoint pen, but a black marker was also used for solid black areas, and all the blood was done with a red gel pen. A slight touch of blue ballpoint pen is also seen – on the guy with the chainsaw.

After completing the drawing, I scanned it in and then adjusted the contrast in Photoshop Elements. I also overlaid two paper textures (bashcorpo’s texture 5 and 6 – these two are favourites of mine and I’ve used them very often), and then added the logo and the text.

Is ‘Evil Dead’ Actually A Sequel?!

FilmDistrict’s new Evil Dead is one of the most important genre films in the past few years. It’s one that could make or break what kind of movies studios make in the next 5 years. We personally fell in love with the first image and trailer, which is why I’ve been weeding through everything hoping to find a needle in the haystack. Through my morning of screen-grabbing (100 high resolution images coming right up!), I came across something that could be potentially HUGE (but then again, it could be nothing).

As many of you Sam Raimi fanatics know, his 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile makes a cameo in all of his films beginning with his 1981 The Evil Dead. In the latest installment, in theaters April 12, 2013, director Fede Alvarez has put the same car in as a prop. This drops a bomb of questions with the two main ones being: is this just an homage, or is this potentially the same vehicle Ash (Bruce Campbell) drove in the original trilogy? This car cameo could actualy mean that the new Evil Dead is a direct sequel to the first film. Could these demons have already feasted on the souls of the characters from the 1981 film? Perhaps it takes place in that universe alone and ignores Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness (if I remember correctly, the car gets sucked in a vortex and goes back in time in those)? And if you look at the below images, the exact same light is smashed!

Am I reading too much into this? Probably. Still, it’s kind of a cool cameo that deserves a look. Check out Jane Levy taking a drag and writing something down atop the 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile. READ MORE

[Remember This?] New Line Cinema Was Developing ‘Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash’

On Friday, October 22, 2004 Bloody Disgusting was sitting on major news that New Line Cinema was in final talks to acquire the rights to the “Ash” character (donned by Bruce Campbell) from Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise (The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness). By that Sunday, October 24, Ghost House Pictures’ J-Horror The Grudge remake had pulled in a whopping $39 million. Our sources tell us that Raimi didn’t even courtesy call New Line before immediately announcing that he’d next be producing a remake of The Evil Dead, his 1981 cult classic that started his career. The New Line deal died the second the remake announcement hit, which will finally come into fruition on April 12 when FilmDistrict releases the Fed Alvarez-directed reboot.

After that cringe worthy news broke, I was slipped the official treatment for New Line Cinema’s Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash (penned by New Line executive Jeff Katz), which was to be the sequel to their 2003 (August 15) blockbuster Freddy vs. Jason, which pitted A Nightmare On Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger against Friday the 13th‘s Jason Voorhees. While the movie died that day, Wildstorm, Dynamite Entertainment, and DC Comics backed a six-issue comic book limited series that was released in November 2007 and ran until March 2008. The comic book series was written by James Kuhoric and illustrated by Jason Craig.

But before the comic was developed, Bloody Disgusting was, and still is, the sole source of the official treatment for Freddy vs. Jason. vs Ash, a film that should have become a horror fan’s new genre Bible. READ MORE

[Interview] Sam Raimi Discusses ‘The Possession’, ‘The Evil Dead’ Remake And His Love Of Horror Movies

On August 31 Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi/Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the film mixes a traditional and somber dramatic aesthetic with some of Raimi’s signature Ghost House chaos.

To that end, myself and a few other journalists hopped on the phone with Raimi last week. Our conversation ranged the gamut from The Possession, the Ghost House brand, the Evil Dead remake and whether or not he’ll take a break from blockbusters to direct another horror film (his last was the vastly underrated and amazing Drag Me To Hell).

The Possession is, “the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

[Rumor Control] ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Trailer Fan-Made, But Absolutely Incredible!

Just a few minutes ago I received an e-mail from an anonymous tipster who claimed to have found a bootlegged trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake, which just wrapped production in New Zealand. It’s going to take more than filming a monitor to get one past me…

Not only is the word “director” misspelled, and title incorrect (there’s no “The” in the title anymore), but these aren’t the actors in Film District’s demonic reboot that actually stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas and (presumably) Bruce Campbell. We also checked in with Evan who tells us this looks nothing like what was on set when he visited this summer. (Update: We also checked with the filmmakers who confirmed it’s a fantastic fraud.)

With that said, the fan-made faux trailer is awesome, and I really want to share it with you! It’s absolutely brilliant stuff that’s so precise in its mimicking of Raimi’s directing style that it’s obviously made by an uber-fan. You can watch it below and then speculate as to what we’ll see when the remake hits theaters April 12, 2013. READ MORE

The New ‘Evil’ Dead’ Has Officially Wrapped!

It still feels like a fantasy. Sequel, remake, reboot, whatever the case, it’s incredibly weird to be a hardcore horror fan and know that a new The Evil Dead film exists.

Bloody received word late last night that Fede Alvarez has officially wrapped production on Evil Dead, his remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic that inspired dozens of genre filmmakers.

Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas, Bruce Campbell, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” They are there to help one of their friends detox from her drug addiction and think many of the hallucinations are related.

Alvarez worked on the screenplay with both Diablo Cody and Rodo Sayagues. FilmDistrict will have in theaters by April 12, 2013. Expect some sort of “first look” soon! Until then, what are your thoughts on this reboot? READ MORE

Sam Raimi Confirms Ash Will Not Be In The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake, Says The Movie Is ‘Gut-Wrenching’

Director Fede Alvarez is currently wrapping up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, now filming in Auckland, New Zealand. The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy.

Now Raimi confirms what we’ve more or less been suspecting, that the character of Ash will not be in the remake. He told MTV, “No, that character’s not in this movie“. He also said that the new one is “gut-wrenching, scary and intense“. This all fits nicely with what I’m expecting from the movie so far. From what I’ve heard, this thing is intense and gory and stays true to the spirit of the original without copying its exact story. In other words, I’m expecting it to do what remakes are (at their best) supposed to do.

In the reboot, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013. Head inside to watch Raimi discuss the remake. READ MORE
