The Green Inferno

Apparently inspired by Italo mondo films like Ruggero Deodato’s notorious 1980 Cannibal Holocaust and Antonio Climati’s 1988 Natura contro (also known as The Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust II), The Green Inferno follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle.

A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Peruvian amazon to stage a protest and save un-contacted tribes. Things do not go as planned.

Official: A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.

God Told Me To (remake)

The ’76 original found Tony Lo Bianco playing a NYC detective trying to connect a series of random attacks. Inexplicably, those behind the crimes – including the late Andy Kaufman playing a police officer who goes buck wild during a St. Patty’s Day parade – would claim that “God” told them to commit the horrendous acts.

The Insane True Story Of Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’; Tribes Laugh At ‘Cannibal Holocaust’!

While we sit back on our tablets reading and snarking about upcoming films, many don’t understand just how difficult the filmmaking process can be. Doing it with the aid of millions of dollars, or on a posh stage is one thing-but taking talent deep into the Amazon is entirely new game. Of course, if you’re a terrible filmmaker, the viewer won’t even know you were deep in the jungle, thus you may as well have used a green screen. But we’re talking about Eli Roth here, director of horror classics including Cabin Fever and Hostel.

Riffing on the English title for Cannibal Holocaust II, Roth took his crew deep into the Amazon for The Green Inferno, which see student activists from comfy NYC travel to the remote forests of Peru to stage a protest but instead they discover a tribe of not-that-friendly cannibals. Roth, who used many stages for his Hostel films, this time took his cast, including Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz and Sky Ferreria, way out of their comfort zone. Dig this…

We went in the Amazon deeper than anyone has ever shot a movie before,” Roth told Empire. “I went so far up the river, we went to a village where they had no electricity, no running water, and they never before had seen a movie or television. We had to explain to them conceptually what a movie was, and we brought a television and a generator and we showed them Cannibal Holocaust. They thought it was the funniest thing that they had ever seen, but we had to know whether they were down with it to let us in their village.

The real-life terror comes in the Roth’s reflecting back to the Amazon set: “Thank God no one got killed, but there were tarantulas, there were spider bites, there were snakes. It was insane. Everybody had to get de-parasited after we got back, but the footage was incredible. I’m just editing the material right now.

Though, speaking on Cannibal Holocaust similarities, Roth explains it’s one of his favorite movies, “but I really wanted to do something that was much more like a Werner Herzog movie. I wanted it to look like The New World, The Mission, or Aguirre: The Wrath of God.

The Green Inferno is now in post-production for possible 2014 release.

[Interview] Eli Roth Talks RZA, Building The World Of ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ And What To Expect From ‘The Green Inferno’!

Even though The Man With the Iron Fists is billed as a “Quentin Tarantino Presents” project, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) and RZA are the clear creative forces behind the film. They wrote the project together (based on an original story by RZA), working for years to create the world and mythology of the film. As a producer, Roth was on the film’s set in China every day helping RZA through his directorial debut.

In the film, “Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.

I recently hopped on the phone with Roth and we discussed his partnership with RZA, building the world of Iron Fists, working with Russell Crowe and avoiding fight fatigue. In regard to his own work as a director, we talked about his evolution and what we can expect from The Green Inferno. READ MORE

Eli Roth Crash Lands In ‘The Green Inferno’, Plot Details Revealed!

It was announced a few weeks back that Worldview Entertainment would be teaming with Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel: Part II) to produce and finance the filmmaker’s top secret The Green Inferno.

Roth wrote the script with Guillermo Amoedo based on Roth’s original story, but the logline is being kept under tight wraps. Many speculated it would be a sequel to Ruggero Deodato shocking 1980 classic Cannibal Holocaust.

A Variety report officially confirms The Green Inferno will be a cannibal flick, and breaks the first story details: Apparently inspired by Italo mondo films like Ruggero Deodato’s notorious 1980 Cannibal Holocaust and Antonio Climati’s 1988 Natura contro (also known as The Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust II), The Green Inferno follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle.

Roth is set to begin shooting in the fall in Peru and Chili, where he recently starred in and produced the earthquake thriller Aftershock, which is currently in post production. He and Amoedo also wrote the script for that film.

What Do You Guys Think Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’ Will Be?

Eli Roth Hostel2 51712 What Do <i>You</i> Guys Think Eli Roths The Green Inferno Will Be?

It was announced this morning that Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce The Green Inferno. This will be the first time director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) steps behind the camera in over 5 years. He’s been busy acting (Aftershock, Inglourious Basterds) and producing. He’s also probably been busy doing what I would be doing if I had the comforts that come with profit participation on Hostel, taking it easy and not rushing into anything. Waiting for the exact right project. There’s nothing wrong with that.

The only real information included with today’s announcement was that the plot points on the horror-thriller remain under wraps and production is set to begin in autumn in Peru and Chile. And that Roth, based on his original story, co-wrote the screenplay with Aftershock co-writer Guillermo Amoedo. So what’s it about?

The smart money seems to be on… Cannibals.

On our original News Bites announcement BD Reader bambi_lives8980 commented, “I would believe that Eli Roth’s new project dubbed ‘Green Inferno’ will be a sort of cannibal, third world survival horror flick, for several reasons. Firstly, Roth loves ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ (not sure about Ferox, but these types of movies for sure). Secondly he’s wanted Ruggero Deodato to make a sequel to Holocaust for years, if I remember correctly, but it just hasn’t happened yet, god knows if it will. Thirdly and lastly, wasn’t ‘The Green Inferno’ the name of the film-within-the-film in ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ where everyone gets killed and eaten?

Let’s talk more inside… READ MORE

It begins with the news that Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce The Green Inferno, Eli Roth‘s directorial follow-up to the Hostel franchise. Plot points on the horror-thriller remain under wraps and production is set to begin in autumn in Peru and Chile. Roth co-wrote the screenplay with Aftershock co-writer Guillermo Amoedo from an original story by Roth. Roth recently directed the pilot episode of Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove.”

IM Global president of international sales Jonathan Deckter and the team expect a torrent of interest on a roster that includes Gold Circle’s supernatural thriller The Possession Of Michael King from first-time director David Jung. “Grieving the loss of his wife, documentary filmmaker Michael King sets out to disprove the existence of the supernatural, with horrific consequences…

IM is also selling 13, a remake of a Thai horror film, with The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm attached. It’s unclear what movie this actual is, but doing some research makes me believe it’s a remake of 13: Game of Death (pictured above), about a down-on-his luck salesman offered $100 million to play a “game show” featuring 13 secret challenges. The catch? The tests grow increasingly intense and morally questionable, but if he quits he loses everything. Chookiat Sakveerakul directed the 2006 original.
