Best-And-Worst-2012

[BEST & WORST '12] Lonmonster’s List Of The Best Films Of 2012

As you can imagine, I watch a lot of horror movies, and having to choose my favorite films of the year was a righteous challenge. It’s a rare occurrence to sit through a movie and feel completely fulfilled. But it’s the great films that make my job so worthwhile. Taking the time to reflect on my favorite films of 2012 allowed me to appreciate just how wonderful horror can be. It made me proud to be a part of this community.

My list is a true melting pot, gathering studio films and indie films alike in order to showcase that good horror comes in all shapes and sizes. In fact, my top film of the year is probably the one with the lowest budget.

I had a tough time ranking my top five picks; I switched the order countless times before I finally conceded. It came down to a simple question, “Which movie stuck in my mind throughout the year above all others?” READ MORE

October officially starts today, and we’ve got a ton of Blu-ray and DVD horror releases coming our way. With a lot of them being films (or TV shows) a healthy majority of us have already seen, I decided to round-up a bunch of them in this giant article and put more focus on the disc specs rather than the films (and TV show) themselves. Check after the jump for my thoughts on The Hole (10/02/12), American Horror Story: Season One (09/25/12), The Game (09/25/12), and Pet Sematary (10/02/12) Blu-rays. Let us know what you guys think of this new home video review format too. Do you prefer full-length film and disc specs reviews for Blu-rays and DVDs? Or do you just want to know whether the disc content (audio, video, special features) makes the release worth buying?

[Exclusive] Director Joe Dante On ‘Gremlins 3′, The Possibility Of A Reboot, And Getting Away With ‘Gremlins 2′

Director Joe Dante‘s children’s horror tale, The Hole – which stars Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Bruce Dern and Teri Polo – opens in theaters September 28 before arriving on Blu-ray and VOD October 2 from Big Air Studios. Mr. Disgusting thoroughly enjoyed the film and I thought it was a lot of fun myself. I didn’t get a chance to see it in 3D unfortunately (no 3D screeners yet), but that’s something I’m hoping to fix next week.

I recently hopped on the phone with Dante and we talked at length about The Hole, his cool web project “Trailers From Hell” and some of his upcoming features. I’ll be sharing the entirety of the interview next week but I figured I’d whet your appetite with some Gremlins talk. There’s been a lot of speculation about the future of the franchise so I figured I’d check in to see if he could clear up any misconceptions. Specifically, we discuss whether or not he’d be willing to return to the franchise – and where he thinks it will go next. In short – something will obviously happen at some point, just don’t expect it to be too soon.

There’s also a tiny bit of Gremlins 2 talk. I’m a huge fan of the series and I think that film is an amazing feat in how much it breaks away from the norm of studio sequels. Head inside for the exchange. READ MORE

Joe Dante’s Family Horror Film ‘The Hole’ Dated For Home Video

One of my favorite TIFF movies a few years back *read the review) was Joe Dante’s incredible 3-D family film The Hole, which is finally arriving on home video September 25, says VideoETA. No word on specs or if the Blu-ray will be in 3-D (it was actually shot in 3-D and looks great), but we’ll update you as soon as word comes in.

From visionary director Joe Dante comes a suspense thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep in the human mind. Life couldn’t possibly get worse, or so thought 17-year-old Dane (Chris Massoglia) and his 10-year-old brother, Lucas (Nathan Gamble), when their single mother, Susan (Teri Polo), uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie (Haley Bennett). With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence. With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement. As the brothers experiment with the hole, they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera, and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the house’s past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face-to-face with their darkest fears to put an end to THE HOLE.

Darkness Falls in 5 Clips From Joe Dante’s The Hole’

One of my favorite horror films of 2009 was Joe Dante’s The Hole 3D, which I reviewed out of TIFF. Unfortunately, the children’s horror film has yet to find a U.S. distributor. But for those of you dying to see it, you’ll be able to pick it up on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK. In fact, inside you’ll find a whopping 5 clips and 2 featurettes that’ll give you a good idea what the film’s all about. Too bad you won’t get to see it in awesome RealD 3D.
