Cusack10711 [Interview] Director and Star of The Raven Talk Saw, Gore, Drugs and Sherlock Holmes!!

Today is the 162nd anniversary of Edgar Allen Poe’s death and to commemorate the event there’s a whole lot of The Raven action going on. While marking a death date rather than a birth date may seem macabre, considering the subject at hand it seems more than appropriate.

Earlier this morning the trailer hit and a little bit later a group of journalists was ushered onto a conference call with the film’s director James McTeigue and star Luke Evans to discuss the film.

Evans plays a detective who partners with Poe (John Cusack) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancee (Alice Eve) and has gone on a murder spree that mimics the author’s work.

Hit the jump to check out some excerpts from the interview interspersed with some cool Edgar Allen Poe factoids.

James McTeigue’s (V for Vendetta) thriller is set in the last days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life, when he gets wrapped up in a serial killer investigation. The trailer, featuring a game of cat and mouse between an unknown killer and Poe, can best be described as From Hell meets Sherlock Holmes – it’s kinda dope.

Luke Evans will play a detective who partners with Poe (Cusack) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancee (Alice Eve) and has gone on a murder spree that mimics the author’s work.

Relativity knocked it out of the park with their Shark Night 3D poster, which is why I find the official one sheet for The Raven so puzzling. It’s arty, yet pretty crappy.

Edgar Allan Poe Returns From The Dead For ‘The Raven And Other Short Stories’!

There is part of me that loves the re-representations of some of my favorite horror tales from popular prose, and then there is the other half that absolutely abhores it. However, when it comes to IDW Publishing they usually hit the nail on the head, and we can all hope that that will be the case come August when they release the Sam Keith illustrated “EDGAR ALLAN POE: THE RAVEN AND OTHER STORIES”. The 300 page graphic novel is still a ways off, but below you can check out all the details we have thus far.

Edgar Allan Poe Returns From The Dead For The Raven And Other Short Stories!

‘The Raven’ Soars Into 2012

Currently in the midst of post-production, Relativity Media has picked a theatrical release date of March 9, 2012 for The Raven… but not necessarily under that name. The distributer announced that the title has been changed to James McTeigue’s Edgar Allan Poe project for the time being (a similar fate recently befell The Dibbuk Box). It could technically revert back to its original title by the time it’s released, but odds are it’ll end up being named something like ‘Poe’.

Starring John Cusack, Luke Evans, and Alice Eve, The Raven (as it was once called…) begins with Poe’s arrival in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

‘The Raven’ Producer Reveals New Plot Details

A lengthy article at Screen Daily talks about Producer Mark D Evans and how he took The Raven to Hungary and Serbia to create James McTeigue’s dark vision of 19th century Baltimore — at a considerable saving. Within the article, Evans reveals more plot details from the thriller starring John Cusack, Ewan McGregor, Luke Evans and Alice Eve.

Historically what happened was Poe had disappeared, then turned up on a park bench in someone else’s clothes, fell into a coma and died,” said Evans. “We’re playing with the historical happenstance of what could have happened in those missing days.

The Raven begins with Poe (played by Cusack) arriving in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

It’s hard to replicate 1849 Baltimore in Baltimore,” he continued. “It became apparent that we’d have to create our own vision of the city. James [McTeigue, director] was trying to show Baltimore through Poe’s eyes, which is a darker, macabre vision of the city. That gave us some creative latitude to look domestically and internationally for a location that would allow us to get as much money on the screen as possible.

The Raven is currently in post in Los Angeles and London. Relativity Media will release the film.

Police State Terror in Mark Wahlberg’s ‘The Raven’

I love a cool concept, especially something that’s quasi-unique. The Fighter (and The Happening, LOL) star Mark Wahlberg apparently agrees as he’ll be producing a feature-length version of Ricardo De Montreuil’s short film The Raven (watch it inside) for Universal Pictures. Justin Marks will write the script that will focus on a young man with powers being chased around downtown Los Angeles by robotic police drones, while a giant police ship coordinates the effort from the skies above. The concept has a little of They Live, Eagle Eye, I, Robot, and a whole lotta awesome. There’s nothing more terrifying than the idea of a police state. Universal’s Raven is not to be confused with FilmNation and Intrepid Pictures’ project with the same title that tells the tale of Edgar Allan Poe.

The Raven

In this tongue-in-cheek movie inspired by Poe’s poem, Dr. Craven is the son of a great sorcerer (now dead) who was once himself quite skilled at that profession, but has since abandoned it. One evening, a cowardly fool of a magician named Bedlo comes to Craven for help- the evil Scarabus has turned him into a raven and he needs someone to change him back. He also tells the reluctant wizard that Craven’s long-lost wife Lenore, whom he loved greatly and thought dead, is living with the despised Scarabus.

The Raven

A wealthy judge coaxes the brilliant but eccentric neurological surgeon Dr. Vollin (Lugosi), who also has an obsessive penchant for Edgar Allen Poe, out of retirement to save the life of his daughter, a dancer crippled and brain damaged in an auto wreck. Vollin restores her completely, but also envisions her as his “Lenore,” and cooks up a scheme to kidnap the woman and torture and kill her fiance’ and father in his Poe-inspired dungeon. To do his dirty work, Vollin recruits a wanted criminal (Karloff), and turns him into a hideous monster to guarantee his subservience.
