5 MORE Horror Movies With Horrible Endings!!!

As often as the importance of endings is stated, it can never be stated loud enough. Can you have a reasonably enjoyable film with a bad ending? Sure, there are plenty. Just as there are more bad films than good films, there are more bad endings than good endings (even amongst good films).

A few months ago I wrote a piece called 5 Horror Films With Horrible Endings and you guys had a lot to say on the matter. So I decided to incorporate some of your suggestions into the sequel, 5 More Horror Movies With Horrible Endings (there’s also 5 Horror Movies With Amazing Endings if you’re feeling more positive)!

[Remember This?] When People Lost Their Shit In Theaters?

Your job as a filmmaker is to create the illusion of reality, a place where a filmgoer can lose themselves in and forgot about their real life troubles. As easy as that sounds, creating a believable and immersive experience isn’t that simple.

Each and every year I dream for that impactful horror film, the one that makes me “feel” something. While I don’t necessarily believe in the notion of being “scared”, I do very much think that some films can be physically effective.

So, with the above title, I’m not asking if you remember a time when people lost their shit in theaters, but more-so if you recall the last time you had that experience. There’s literally nothing better than watching hundreds of people around you stand up, and scream and yell in terror right before your eyes.

We’ve all grown up to stories about how effective William Friedkin’s The Exorcist was back in 1973, but what has rocked the boat since then? Personally, one of the best experience I had was in viewing a “sneak peak” of DreamWorks’ The Ring back in 2002. I will never forget the audience reaction to Samara coming out of the television screen – you’d have thought she was literally in the theater. And while there was quite the reaction to Paranormal Activity in 2007, it wasn’t even close to what I witnessed back in 2002.

So I ask for you guys to tell me about your crazy theater experience. What movies had such an impact on patrons that they lost their shit? READ MORE

Oscar Winning Make-Up Artist Rick Baker Receives A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Rick Baker Gets A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame!

Normally we don’t cover this sort of thing at Bloody-Disgusting, we’re not an award-centric bunch. But this is Rick Baker we’re talking about. Even if you’re not familiar with his name I guarantee that, as a BD reader, he has touched your life in some way. Proof? Okay… An American Werewolf In London, Star Wars, Videodrome, Starman, Silver Bullet, Captain EO, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Harry And The Hendersons, Gremlins 2, Ed Wood, Wolf, The Frighteners, Escape From L.A., Men In Black, The Devil’s Advocate, The Ring, Hellboy 2, The Wolfman Remake… the list goes on.

Baker is at least partially responsible, and in most cases almost 100% responsible, for the outstanding special effects makeup and creature designs in those projects. He’s also won 7 Oscars for best makeup, first winning for AWIL in 1981 (the year the category itself started), and has been nominated for an additional 5 Academy Awards. He’s also won a sh*tload of Saturn Awards.

Which is why it makes sense that a throng of people (including yours truly) gathered, in what amounts to torrential rain by LA standards, to see him receive his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame this morning. Though the event was in part to celebrate today’s release of the better-than-expected Men In Black 3 on DVD/Blu-ray, it was really about paying homage to his entire body of work. Directors Guillermo Del Toro (whom Baker most recently worked with on Hellboy 2) and Barry Sonnenfeld (Baker worked on all three Men In Black films) were onhand to pay tribute to their colleague. Sonnenfeld characterized Baker as writer as well as a designer, breathing stories and verisimilitude into his work. Del Toro, meanwhile, praised Baker as an “actor” in his own right – his creations being a performance of their own. Near the end of the ceremony, a representative for the Guiness Book Of World records who presented him with plaques for “Most Oscar Wins” and “Most Oscar Nominations” for a makeup artist.

Sadako Returns In Full Japanese Trailer For 3 D Sequel

13 years after the original Ring movie, Sadako will be returning to the big screen in Sadako 3D. Kadokawa Shoten Company released today the film’s full official Japanese trailer, while we got our hands on a photo of a Japanese theater standee. Koji Suzuki, the author of the original “Ring” novel series, originally indicated that the new 3D film will include a scene of Sadako coming out of a television set, similar to the original. He penned the screenplay. Tsutomu Hanabusa directs. It opens in Japan May 12.

Akane is a high school teacher who hears a rumor from her students that there is actual footage on the Internet of someone’s suicide. The footage is said to drive anyone who sees it to also commit suicide. Akane does not believe the rumor at first, but when one of her female students dies after viewing the footage, she and her boyfriend Takanori are fatefully drawn into the horror that has been created by the man who appears in the suicide footage, Kashiwada.

Kashiwada’s intention is to create chaos in the world by bringing back Sadako and the power of her curse. Now Akane has to fight against Sadako and Kashiwada to save the lives of herself and Takanori.

For those of you keeping tally, there have been four Japanese films based on Koji Suzuki’s popular Ring series including Ringu, Rasen, Ringu 2, and Ringu 0: Birthday. Then there are the little known Japanese TV Series: “Ring: The Final Chapter” (12 Episodes) and it’s sequel “Rasen” (13 Episodes). New Writing Blood For Reboots Of ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’!

Grudge112811 New Writing Blood For Reboots Of The Grudge and The Ring!

Last week while Bloody Disgusting was on the Los Angeles set of Takashi Shimizu’s new film, 7500, we had a chance to speak with Roy Lee about that film as well as a few upcoming projects. While I can’t say too much about 7500 right now, Mr. Lee was needled for information on possible new takes on reboots for The Ring and The Grudge.

We are looking to do a new version of ‘The Grudge’ but we haven’t decided exactly what it will be. We haven’t decided what it will be. We’ve just put it out to the film community that we are hearing takes from writers on what they could bring to the table and what their thoughts are about a new version of ‘The Grudge’.

Whatever form it takes, you might want to expect it to be a bit different. Why? When asked about parodies of The Ring and The Grudge, Lee replied “I enjoy them. I find them quite funny. But once a horror genre is commonly parodied in other movies it sort of kills that genre or that specific take on that genre so that once you see it it sort of becomes a joke in and of itself so you have to push to find something new.

As far as The Ring reboot? “It’s the same thing as ‘The Grudge’. They are hearing takes and actually having a script written just to see if it works to restart the franchise. In this situation we are hearing different pitches and once we hear an idea we really like we will potentially execute it.

7500 lands in theaters on August 31, 2012. Expect more updates, and our full set report, as that date approaches. READ MORE

After discovering a reel of 16mm film in the basement of a dilapidated hospital, a neuroscientist and her husband find themselves enthralled by the film’s bizarre content. The film documents underground experiments on the human brain trying to unlock the Sylvian Fissure – an invisible reality believed to be achieved between life and death. Obsessed with this surreal concept, the scientist attempts to continue the strange experiments on her own, utilizing her own daughters as test subjects.
