Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. You can give us your specific count in the comments or yell at us for the films we’ve left out!! The categories are:

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Hardcore

41-50 Points: Unstable

51-60 Points: Psychopath

61 Points: Special Circle Of Hell

Head inside to take the challenge! The films are listed in no particular order. This is NOT a ranking! READ MORE

[Random Cool] Pixar Illustrator Re-imagines R-rated Movie Scenes As a Children’s Picture Book!

My credit card it about to get hit with a major dent thanks to Pixar illustrator Josh Cooley.

The mad genius has created a collection of R-rated movie scenes drawn in the style of children’s picture book. So what you have below is a gallery of scenes from the likes of Alien, The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Seven and even Rosemary’s Baby. My personal favorite is Rosemary’s Baby as he gives Mia Farrow those “Disney eyes”.

What have you done to it?” asked Rosemary.
What have you done to its eyes?

[Random Cool] All The Zoom Shots From ‘The Shining’ At The Same Time!

The Shining is one of my all time favorite horror movies and it still has the capacity to creep me out to this day. That being said, I’m not sure if looking at all of the zoom shots at once feels even more unsettling because the film is predisposed to trigger that feeling in me anyway or if it’s just genuinely creepy on its own. I suspect it’s a mix of both, with some emphasis on the latter.

I’d really like to get the reaction to this from someone who has never seen the film, but I suppose that would require spoiling it for them. At any rate – if you love The Shining, you’ll probably love this. It was put together by Ian Kammer.

[OMFG] Extremely Rare Interview With Lia Beldam, The Bathtub Ghoul In ‘The Shining’!

[OMFG] Extremely Rare Interview With Lia Beldam, The Bathtub Ghoul In The Shining!

As a young boy one of the most erotic, yet simultaneously terrifying moments in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining is the nude woman in the bathtub who chokes Danny (Danny Lloyd) and then seduces Jack (Jack Nicholson) before she transforms into a hideous ghoul.

Said woman was model Lia Beldam, who appears in the following unedited rare interview from Movie Geeks United’s ongoing The Kubrick Series!

The uncut interview explores Beldam’s experience working with the late Kubrick, and such big stars including Jack Nicholson. READ MORE

[Random Cool] See Freddy, Jason And Michael Myers Grow Old!

shiningtwinsland32412 [Random Cool] See Freddy, Jason And Michael Myers Grow Old!

Being a serial killer, retarded or otherwise, isn’t a job with a healthy retirement plan. And as good as you are, it’s lonely at the top. Freddy Krueger doesn’t have a special someone to grow old with, Jason doesn’t understand basic economics and the ladies never flocked to Michael Myers’ charming personality.

Photographer Federico Chiesa understands this and he’s crafted a new series of photographs that relay the fates of our favorite villains. The photos are part of his series “Horror Vacui” (latin for “fear of empty space“) and they’re something you’re definitely gonna want to check out.

Want To Hear The First Chapter Of The Sequel To ‘The Shining’?

KingReadingLand22012 Want To Hear The First Chapter Of The Sequel To The Shining?

This past weekend Stephen King made an appearance at the Savannah Book Festival. During his lecture or Q&A, which apparently touched on all aspects of his career, he read an excerpt from his new sequel to The Shining“Dr. Sleep”.

While the sequel is far ranging and the bulk of it takes place many years after the events in The Shining – and apparently includes vampires for some reason – this portion of the first chapter directly concerns The Overlook Hotel. So it should be of direct concern to you.

The folks over at The Daily Dead got the video. Hit the jump to check it out! READ MORE

[Random Cool] See A TV Spot For ‘The Shining’ Made Up Of Alternate Takes!

[Random Cool] See A TV Spot For The Shining Made Up Of Alternate Takes!

Did you know Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich is a semi-obsessive fan of The Shining? Neither did I until I saw this picture over at AICN. That pic led me to Unkrich’s Tumblr entitled “The Overlook Hotel”.

Over there I found a really cool TV spot cut for the film. It doesn’t feature scenes you haven’t seen before, but it does feature different takes of those scenes. I could actually tell the difference since a couple of the shots are actually fairly different.

Per The Overlook Hotel, “TV spots were often edited using existing prints of alternate takes, rather than going through the time and expense of creating new prints from original or duplicate negative. The commercials were edited on film, not video, so it was just easier to use the alternate takes, which were already sitting unused in the cutting room. This certainly makes sense, and seems to have been standard practice at the time, but it still strikes me as odd that Kubrick wouldn’t insist upon using only the footage that appeared in the finished film. Regardless, the commercial remains a fascinating glimpse into an alternate version of the film that was not meant to be.

[Sundance '12]: ‘Room 237′ A Gift For ‘Shining’ Obsessives!

Room237Land12612 [Sundance 12]: Room 237 A Gift For Shining Obsessives!

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival last week was Rodney Ascher’s Room 237, an experimental documentary that explores the numerous theories about the real meaning of Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. An we have a review!

Ryan Daley writes in from Sundance, “Many of the ideas presented are preposterous and absurd, but every interview subject has a point or two that’s surprisingly relevant. The film as a whole is insanely thought-provoking. And more importantly, whether it’s discussing subliminal Hitler mustaches or implied erections, Room 237 is consistently entertaining. But this is coming from someone who has seen ‘The Shining’ more than 20 times.

From the official site, “‘Room 237′ is a subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out…

The Shining

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) gets a job as the custodian of the Overlook Hotel, in the mountains of Colorado. The place is closed down during winter, and Torrance and his family will be the only occupants of the hotel for a long while. When Jack meets the ghost of Mr. Grady, the former custodian of the hotel who murdered his wife and his two daughters, things begin to get really nasty…
