Open Road Films and Liddell Entertainment have released yet another ho-hum look at Silent House (review), their horror thriller starring talented newcomer Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and co-directed by filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water). The image displays yet another look at Olsen (I know it’s hard to show anything else, considering most of the movie consists of Olsen walking around a house), only it looks like a low resolution screengrab. Come on guys! Thankfully, the trailer is beyond badass. I seriously cannot wait until March 9. How many of you guys plan on checking it out? Have you seen the original?

Real-Time, Real Fear Promised In Official ‘Silent House’ Trailer!

Real Time, Real Fear Promised In Official Silent House Trailer!

I love a film that keeps all of their cards close to their chest and then explodes leading up to release. Thus far, we’ve seen an clip that revealed nothing, along with a handful of stills featuring Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen. Now, Open Road is exploding out of the gate with an excellent trailer for Silent House, their remake of the Spanish La Casa Muda that was directed by Open Water‘s Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. Bloody Disgusting saw the film at its Sundance world premiere last January; Ryan Daley quite liked it.

In theaters March 9, the trailer promises real time fear, a kind of new spin on the genre (even though [REC] already did it). “Moment by moment, second by second, the silence will kill you…” states the trailer.

First ‘La Casa Muda’ Clip is Behind You!

While we patiently await a U.S. release for either the original or remake, UK cinemas will see the release of the Spanish-language La Casa Muda (The Silent House) in cinemas on April 8. Gustavo Hernandez’s first-person thriller has already been remade here in the States (The Silent House premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival).

Starring Gustavo Alonso, Florencia Colucci, María Salazar, Abel Tripaldi, the plot is based on a true story that happened in the late 40′s in a small village in Uruguay. Inside you’ll find a brand new clip: “It’s Behind You!”

The film focuses on Laura, who, second by second, intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed. Laura and her father Wilson settle down in a cottage they have to renew since its owner will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there and repair the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and gets louder and louder on the upper floor of the house. Wilson goes up to see what is going on while she remains downstairs on her own, waiting for her father to come down.

Full Sundance 2011 Coverage: Ryan Daley Reflects Back on This Year’s Big Indie Horror Films!

I’m not saying that the 2011 Sundance Film Festival was a complete bust, but I can’t help but feel a little bit let down. Like many B-D readers, I was all sweaty and jacked up for sure-fire winners like Red State, The Oregonian, and Hobo with a Shotgun, only to come away feeling bemused and melancholy and…well, still a little bit sweaty, I guess. Looking back, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival gave us four terrific films (The Killer Inside Me, Frozen, Buried, and 7 Days) , but we only got two truly great ones out of this year`s fest. Yeah, that`s right, two.

Still, it’s worth noting that there were more “horror films” at this year’s festival than there have been in a very long time, which has to be a good sign, right? At least it shows that they’re trying. And at the very least, I had a great time. My abiding gratitude to B-D for sending me, and of course, a special thanks to our loyal readers for all of their much appreciated comments.

Inside you’ll find my ranking of this year’s films, along with a complete breakdown of ALL the festival coverage.

Sundance ’11 Interview: ‘Vampire’ Director Iwai Shunji

Debuting at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival was Japanese director Iwai Shunji’s Vampire (review), a film about a young schoolteacher (Kevin Zegers) who develops a taste for human blood and seeks out suicidal women in online chat rooms in order to quench his unconventional thirst. B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen recently chatted via email with Shunji about the low-key movie, which veers away from the usual cinematic vampire clichés to give viewers a de-romanticized perspective on the bloodsucker sub-genre. First Lantern-Filled Images from Original ‘Silent House’!

Much like Filmax’s REC, you will probably end up seeing the remake to La Case Muda (trailer) before you get a chance to see Gustavo Hernandez’s chilling ghost tale from Uruguay. While the Chris Kentis-directed remake The Silent House (English-language translation) just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (review here), we just now got our hands on the first batch of lantern-filed imagery from Hernandez’s original. It’s a pretty solid flick, although the ending is a bit, errrrrr.

The plot is based on a true story that happened in the late 40′s in a small village in Uruguay. The film focuses on Laura, who, second by second, intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed. Just how good was it? How about crazy awesome!?

With all of the troll roaring, people chasing, and mythological elements, ‘The Troll Hunter’ is easily the ‘Jurassic Park’ of first-person horror.

Sundance ’11 REVIEW: A Second Look at ‘I Saw the Devil’

One of my top 10 films of 2010 was Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil, which opens in limited theaters March 4 from Magnet Releasing.

A hard-boiled thriller, I Saw The Devil stars Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) as a psychopathic serial killer up against Lee Byung-hun as a special agent whose fiancée becomes one of his victims. Lee’s cool-headed and intelligent character in turn becomes a monster in order to avenge the killing.

Sundance ’11 REVIEW: ‘Vampire’ Turns Ryan White With Boredom

Sliding under the radar during most of production was Iwai Shunji’s Japanese Vampire, which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film drained Ryan Daley of all energy.

The ingredients for a ‘Martin’-like cult classic are certainly present…but this is one of those movies that inexplicably abandons compelling subplots in favor of boring ones. ‘Vampire’ is too self-indulgent to be taken seriously. It’s a film with a complete disregard for its audience.

Sundance ’11 REVIEW: ‘The Silent House’ Remake Carries High Aspirations, Scares!

Out of left field the Sundance Film Festival announced the last second premiere of The Silent House, which would bring Open Water director Chris Kentis’ back to the fest that kick-started his career. How did the haunted house remake fair?

As is the case with most haunted house movies, the reasons behind the haunting are never as compelling as the haunting itself, but Kentis manages to mine the single-setting premise with some clever, highly memorable scares. He’s attacked an impressively ambitious technical project–a work reminiscent of films like Buried, REC, or Alfred Hitchcock`s Rope–and managed to pull it off admirably.

Sounds a bit better than the original! Click the title above for Ryan Daley’s full review or here for all of our Sundance coverage.

Sundance ’11 Interview: ‘The Silent House’ Team Chris Kentis & Laura Lau!

Just barely sliding into Sundance this year is the Laura Lau/Chris Kentis horror flick The Silent House (review), a last-minute addition that follows a young woman’s night of terror as she travels with her father and uncle to the family’s isolated summer home and comes to discover they’re not alone. Lau and Kentis, the husband-and-wife duo behind 2004 hit Open Water, based the story on the recent Uruguayan film La casa muda, duplicating that movie’s amazing – though not unprecedented – feat of being filmed entirely in one continuous take. B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen recently got on the phone with the couple to discuss the project’s astonishingly quick journey to the screen, the formidable challenge of shooting it all in one go, and working with star Elizabeth Olsen (the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley). See inside for the full interview.
