Everyone knows the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but not everybody knows the story of Thomas Adye, the detective protagonist of Cole Haddon’s The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde… yet. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a story, like Frankenstein and Dracula, that everybody thinks they know. How much originality is it possible for an author to infuse into such a story that has been retold hundreds of times? The answer is quite a bit if you’re Cole Haddon. Teaming up with Dark Horse Comics and the artistry of M. S. Corley, Haddon has given a new spin to an old classic, in fact multiple classics, in his comic, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” As I was flipping through the opening chapter of this four part series, it started out with a retelling of Jekyll’s transformation into Hyde – a story full of hubris and Victorian era views on morality that are almost painful to the modern reader. An abrupt jump in the narration five years into the future, after Jekyll has become Hyde, gives the reader the first inkling that this comic will be anything but a retelling of the classic. I found myself thinking, “Wait a second. I don’t remember Hyde slicing and dicing prostitutes. Wasn’t that . . . Hello darlings, I present to you my interview with Cole Haddon, a man that has woven together numerous works of horror literature and cinema to create “THE STRANGE CASE OF MR. HYDE”. Set in Victorian London, the combination of Haddon’s writing and M S Corely’s artwork give this story the correct look and feel of period. Additionally, this comic serves to present a completely new story, while simultaneously giving readers a feeling of familiarity due to numerous horror references and character cameos. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a strange obsession with the case of Jack the Ripper. For some reason it has always appealed to my darkest curiosities. Of late we have been seeing a lot of Jack in the illustrated realm, but Dark Horse Comics might have the most interesting one yet as they have announced “THE STRANGE CASE OF MR HYDE” for April. The crossover doesn’t begin for another couple of months, but below you can check out the first details on the all new series.
