[Blu-ray Review] ‘Phantasm II’ Juggles Absurdity, Comedy, and Suspense

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

11 years after Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm became a cult hit, Universal decided to bankroll a sequel. By the late ‘80s, horror sequels were tremendously popular, so Universal figured they would pump a bunch of money into a Phantasm sequel and have another cash cow on their hands. Thanks to the enhanced budget, Phantasm II has got some fantastic special effects and explosions, but unfortunately, with great budgets comes great studio intervention.

As Coscarelli explains in Scream Factory’s Blu-ray commentary, Universal wouldn’t let him recast A. Michael Baldwin as the main protagonist, Mike. The studio said they wanted a “working” actor and since Baldwin hadn’t done much in the decade since the first Phantasm, they wouldn’t let Coscarelli bring him back. They had faith in the immense drawing power of actor James LeGros though. The Solarbabies star had a devout band of worshippers at the time (maybe) and seeing his name attached to the sequel would surely have admirers lining up outside the theaters. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] Corey Mitchell’s Top 15 Festival Horror Films of 2012

I’m old and have two young daughters. Before kids, I used to go to the movies at least two times a week. Now, I almost never head out to the theater to catch a first-run movie. I do, however, get to attend a couple of film festivals each year.

As a result, I get to see a lot of movies that many of you won’t see for a long time. Just think of these reviews as a primer for shit you should most definitely check out whenever you can.

Some of these films have since had theatrical runs; a few with limited runs, and some are available on DVD or Netflix. Most of these though have not seen the darkness of a theater outside of their film festival runs.

Do yourself a favor and track them down. You’ll be glad you did. READ MORE

Phantasm is the twisted 1979 tale of Jody and his brother Mike, written, produced, and directed by Don Coscarelli. Jody and Mike’s parents have passed away and their lives revolve around Jody wanting to break free while Mike follows him everywhere he goes. After their friend Tommy passes away by an apparent suicide, they start to find that the local cemetery and mausoleum are a bit off.

Little do they know the undertaker is an alien that wants dead bodies so he can transform them to do his bidding.

[Interview] Jessica Biel On Defying Convention With Pascal Laugier And The Ending Of ‘The Tall Man’

Now on VOD platforms (and in theaters August 31) from Image Entertainment is The Tall Man, featuring Jessica Biel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Blade: Trinity, Total Recall). A few journalists (including myself) hopped on the phone with Biel to discuss her character, whether or not seeing Martyrs gave her any pause in taking the part, and the challenging nature of the film’s ending.

See ‘The Tall Man’ On VOD This Wednesday

VOD is a beautiful thing because of limited theatrical runs like the one given to Pascal Laugier’s The Tall Man. Oh, it’s hitting theaters on August 31, but odds are it’s not going to be playing anywhere near most of you (myself included). Today, Image Entertainment announced that the thriller will come to VOD on Wednesday, August 1 – so, two days from now. Being a huge fan of Martyrs, this has officially become part of my weekend plans.

[Fantasia '12] Lonmonster’s Mini-Reviews #1: ‘The Tall Man’, ‘Sushi Girl’, ‘Black Pond’ & ”The Devil’s Carnival’

The 16th annual Fantasia Film Festival is underway in Montreal, Canada. The festival is so packed this year that it’s overwhelming to even begin looking at the film schedule. The horror lineup spans across subgenres and budgets and this is precisely what makes Fantasia so special. Giving equal attention to major productions and low budget indie films, Fantasia has something for everyone.

In its 16th year, there are over 160 screenings during the three week festival, and it would be insane to even attempt reviewing them all. I’ve been running to the various theaters to catch each flick, and I still can’t watch them all. Although it would be ideal to write full reviews, it would take way too many days, and way too many cups of coffee. What follows are mini-reviews on what I’ve seen so far at Fantasia 2012 including The Tall Man, Sushi Girl, Black Pond and The Devil’s Carnival. READ MORE

A Trio Of Incredibly Boring International Posters For ‘The Tall Man’

The other day we exclusively premiered the one-sheet for The Tall Man, now we’ve landed three international posters out of France (where it’s titled The Secret), along with a new still featuring Silent Hill‘s Jodelle Ferland.

Arriving in theaters August 31 from Image Entertainment, the trailer features star Jessica Biel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Blade: Trinity, Total Recall) and the legend of “The Tall Man”. The footage is edited together incredibly “dramatic”, which I find interesting. I’ve heard it’s not incredibly violent like Martyrs.

Limited Edition Vinyl ‘Martyrs’ And ‘Red Nights’ Soundtracks Available

I’m a big fan of the French extreme horror that has been coming out over the past several years. Tackling issues that are not normally brought up in American cinema, films such as High Tension, Inside, and Frontier(s) are exceedingly violent, gory films with a strong commentary on social and political issues. And one of the more intense and thought-provoking films to come out in recent years was Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs. Incredibly uncomfortable to watch with an ending that still haunts me, I always fall back on it as a recommendation for French horror.

Another great thing about the film was the soundtrack composed by Seppuku Paradigm. Now, in anticipation of Laugier’s upcoming film The Tall Man, Seventeen Records has made available in extremely limited quantities a vinyl copy of the soundtrack. Unfortunately, all pre-orders for the Martyrs soundtrack alone have been snagged but there is still an option to pre-order the Martyrs/Red Nights limited edition combo pack. This pack also includes an Eden Log vinyl single and will be signed by the band. The album will ship Sept. 15th. READ MORE
