Interview: Andre Ovredal, Director of ‘TrollHunter’!!

The latest indie pickup from Magnolia’s genre arm Magnet Releasing is director Andre Ovredal’s TrollHunter (reviews), a found footage film from Norway about a group of three college students who set out to make a documentary about a supposed bear poacher named Hans, only to discover that he’s actually been sanctioned by the government to track down and kill the enormous trolls that roam the Norwegian countryside.

An engaging film that blends “shaky-cam” style with large-scale special effects, The Troll Hunter releases on VOD May 6th and in limited theaters on June 10th. ‘Troll Hunter’ Director Andre Ovredal Updates Status of American Remake, Talks Sequel Potential

Though it was earlier reported by the LA Times that Universal had purchased the remake rights to low-budget Norwegian monster movie The Troll Hunter – which Magnet is releasing on VOD May 6th and in theaters June 10th – B-D just learned from director Andre Ovredal that the remake is in fact not set up at the studio, but is instead in the process of being snatched up by another (unspecified) company.

Universal Owns Remake Rights for ‘The Troll Hunter’

In an article over at the LA Times they reveal that universal Pictures now hold the remake rights to Andre Ovredal’s The Troll Hunter, described as The Blair Witch Project meets Men in Black meets The Host. Shot in a vérité style, the Norwegian original is the story of a group of Norwegian film students that set out to capture real-life trolls on camera after learning their existence has been covered up for years by a government conspiracy. Magnet Releasing holds the domestic distribution rights for the original. Plans are to release it theatrically in 2011.
