[Album Review] IAMX – The Unified Field

I’m one of those people who has a pretty active imagination. My brain is always coming up with fantastic images and constructing new scenarios that place me in a position of hero/victim/lover/killer/etc… Sometimes when I listen to music these images are even stronger and more vivid. However it takes a very particular type of album to make me feel like I’ve joined in on a story, as though I’m an invisible eye that gets to follow along on a journey. These albums are few and far between (for me) and when I get one in my hands, I want to just ease back and follow the story wherever it takes me, just like one does when reading an engaging book.

Having said all of that, I come now to IAMX’s The Unified Field, which comes out today. Fronted by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps), this album unfolded in a way I’ve rarely felt, each song a chapter in a story. And since I had such strong images and such a cohesive story in my mind, I decided to change up my review style and instead write out the story I went on.

Now, I have to make it clear that each entry is not affected by lyrics but rather by how the music made me feel. With that out of the way, I present The Unified Field: The Story, as seen by my mind. READ MORE

Bloody-Disgusting’s music podcast Aural Pleasures is back with a episode to tickle your ear canals! Hosts Jonny and Bill are joined by BD contributor SuperRadMike to discuss all sorts of fun topics. The guys chat about the return of Nine Inch Nails and the music of How To Destroy Angels as well as Scott Weiland and his termination from Stone Temple Pilots. The fellas also discuss the Detroit stop of Metallica‘s Orion Music + More Festival and Mike brings up his excitement for the Pitchfork Music Festival.

IAMX To Release New Album ‘The Unified Field’

“I am obsessed with the concept of a scientific theory of an underlying base level of consciousness. A ‘unified field’ out of which all things are created. From super strings to quarks to atoms to humans to galaxies… a conceptual place where we are all connected.”

It is with these words that Chris Corner (ex-Sneaker Pimps) describes the upcoming IAMX album The Unified Field, which will be released Mar. 22nd. The album is a diverse collection of new tracks, from the fantastic opener “I Come With Knives” to the Middle Eastern-influenced “Land Of Broken Promises”.

Corner further explains about the recording of the album by saying, “I begged an old friend and collaborator producer Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys) to come on board from the beginning. What made this special and unique among IAMX records was a huge focus on performance and expanding the more organic side of my music. Jim is amazing at bringing out the best of performers and he pushed me into playing instruments I have never touched before. Vibraphone, glockenspiel, celesta, harpsichord. That was refreshing. I remembered why I love to play so much. This added a complexity to the sound of the record I couldn’t have achieved alone.”

IAMX Announces N. American Tour

IAMX Releases Music Video For “The Unified Field”

IAMX, the solo project from Sneaker Pimps‘ Chris Corner, has released a music video for “The Unified Field”, which comes from his upcoming double-A single that comes out on Dec. 3rd (pre-order here). The video shows a filthy, obviously mentally challenged homeless man finding music in the city all around him. There is something poetically beautiful about the whole thing. You can watch it below.

I used to listen to Sneaker Pimps nonstop about 10 years ago (“Flowers And Silence” still gives me shivers), so I’m going to keep a very close eye on an upcoming album. READ MORE
